Great vid. I have 7 of these Roadstars. All from 1984. Every model from the deluxe catalog except for the 520. Wonderful guitars. All have the pro rok'r trems.
I have to agree with @jack317, this is truly one of your best videos ever. A true Tour de Force of problem solving skills applied to a very challenging project. A real treat, thanks Dave!
This was the first guitar I bought in1986 but it might be a little bit older, mine is a RG425 with 2 humbuckers (bridge and middle), same colour. It's a really great neck, incredibly stable with a flat radius, a fantastic practice guitar and also played tons of gigs with it. I keep this one in Eb for now, the Floyd works great for me and had never any troubles with anything on this guitar. Best 450 bucks I've ever spent, keep it forever
This guitar has been played a lot. It has a well-worn neck and a lot of palm sweat dripped over that tremolo over the years. Surprised you didn't have the hand condoms on for that tremolo work. Lots of DNA. Thank you, Dave!
According to the serial number my Roadstar 2 is an 82 with dual humbuckers and a coil split switch. It's a made in Japan guitar and may well be the best playing guitar I've ever owned.
I lost my tremolo bar, its the same aa this onw a 440 with floyd rose system not the super roker bridge. What would be a goos replacwment bar for a 440 roadatar 2
Dave, I love the Roadstar II series guitars and basses - I bought three of the Roadstar II five strings so far, looking for the guitars eventually. I like that strat style you’re working on!
Her name was Slinky Pinky and her daddy was a Floyd He tinkered with that guitar and it sure got her annoyed . She took up with a poser and he took her to his Caddy Slinky Pinky picked a rose cuz Floyd just ain't her Daddy
I've gotta Vester with locking trem I'll hafta do similar work on the bridgoramus soon, big prob on that is I can't lower the saddles enough as the threads are all getting locked up the same way. I should look up that release all substance n finally get it set right. No more putting it off cause of all the extra fiddly steps involved.
I have a fender floyd rose on one of my plus deluxes .what a pain trying to intonate it ,and some of the hex bolts would not lock the saddles down ???ended up putting washers on them
You know any time I see an Edge bridge like that and the posts bottom out the first thing I would be looking for would be locking posts. Not sure if that particular guitar had it or not but pointier RG's definitely do. Possibly could have avoided a neck shim altogether.
The bridge is tilted forward and not parallel to the bridge from what i can see, thats wy the action is to high...tight the screws in the back and move the bridge backwards and re adjust...
Does Dave know the bridge has locking posts? Maybe he needs to insert the lock key and loosen the stud internally. This will give him more adjustment. Maybe.
One more reminder why I'm glad that I sold my floyd rose equipped guitar - no more screwing around with this crap. I ended up getting a new guitar with a hardtail and never looked back.
Really think you are awesome Dave. But I almost lost it when you banged on that Edge tremolo. Those things are worth something on eBay. Even Steve Vai went back to the OG Edge (not the crappy Edge II). Have a 1986 RS530 with an Edge.
This video is why my one Floyd Rose guitar almost never gets played. Changing the strings is a project. Then try taking to an outdoor gig in the summer. Nothing like needing a hex key in the middle of the set to tune it.
Dave I have an 82 ibanez blazer beaut guitar best I have played. Kicks new fenders ass. Quick question : the pickups are super tap sixes and they dont have individual bar magnets it would seem just a recessed strip of metal along the length. Any idea what these are or have you seen them before cant find any info. Cheers love yo vids mate. From Australia
I have a 1983 Ibanez roadstar ii. It has a standard trem and a regular nut. I need to replace the nut but can't find any info on the nut specs anywhere
I have a roadstar II and trying to freshen it up but I’m having loads of trouble with the string sorted at the top of the neck. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
I had a Kramer Baretta, and I stuck an EMG 85 in it and I learned to embrace the Floyd Rose. I got all the little tools and everything needed to keep it in adjustment and after I spend some time with it it really accuratitized. that slab. Much later on, in fact just about 6 or 8 months ago I was reading where Walter Brecker had a studio guitar that he used quite often and that was set up with a rose that he did not use, but he did appreciate the fact that he could dial that guitar in for Studio work. So as far as I'm concerned Floyd Rose does have some value. There are some mods you can do such as increasing the weight of the tone block excetera... whuch I think works to help bring out the attributes that are contained within the Floyd Rose design. I also think that if you scooped out the wood just behind the Floyd Rose string array adjusters you can do those backwards bends with a little bit more articulation in the standard set up over a flat slab. Nice stuff Dave, thanks for the vid.
Haven't been able to stop laughing Dave, from about 9 minutes on ... gotta finish the video then Ill comment again. Davis world of FUN STUFF, you almost have more fun than I do removing asbestos. I cus a lot more tho
hi guys im in the middle of building my dream strat and im a bit out of my depth with my custom wiring, does anyone know of a site or anyone that can do a custom wiring diagram if i tell them what i got and what i need it to do, i tryed the one on Guitarelectronics.com and they never did it or returned my emails :( so im looking for someone eles to help me
They suck to set up, but once it's set up, it's an amazing device. Use good strings (Elixirs, Ernie Ball Paradigm series, etc) and spend 10 minutes breaking them in and they'll stay in tune within a couple of cents for months.
Love the head stock Shape, hate the Floyd had a kahler floyd rose on a Gonad Artisan ST tiny blocks of steel to hold the string ends in the Kahler that fall out never to be seen again an absolute pain in the arse to step up hours and hours . . . .oh yea and then the fukn intonation . . . .
I've got 2 RG125s with Kahler trems (and a Hamer Standard). They play great, and hold the tuning and intonation better than anything that came before or followed. Shame people have such difficulty setting the tension of the springs and the saddles. These Kahler handle well, when set up properly.
I've seen you do a few Ibanez floating trems (Edge, etc) and Floyds now, Dave. That sparkling blue RG you did a few years ago was a mess and I gotta say, man...If I got this guitar back like this, I'd be pissed. Then again, I do all setups myself. It's common sense that this thing should not float. If it ain't got a routed cavity, it's flush with the body. The Ibanez Community has TONS of info on how the Edge Tremolo should be set up on the guitars that have it installed. Filing a new edge on the knife edges is sometimes required on older edges as well. This one could've used it on the bass side. Most times, the posts are gooched too, if the knife edges are. Also, those 2-point fender style and Hipshots USUALLY have a full step of pull up, but no more. Usually action dictates how much pull up you'll get from a 2 point synchronized trem. Not knocking your work, 90% of your vids have EXCELLENT content, but research how the different Ibanez trems (Edge, Edge lo-pro, Edge III, Edge Zero, Zero II, etc) should be set up.
If you have a Floyd Rose-style locking nut, you need something to bring the string angles to a certain degree (compensated tuning machine heights, angled headstock, string retainer bar, etc) to avoid putting too much pressure on the string at the joint.
Jesus, I would never have the patience to work on that thing.I would have lost my temper and smashed it to pieces. Even worse still,I would have to pay off the owner for the damage.
That was my first guitar when I was like 13. Same color - pearl white with blue green sparkles. If I could go back in time I wouldn’t have picked that guitar. Too stupid to understand Floyd Rose system, hadn’t figured out how to wipe my own ass at 13. After NOT giving up playing I eventually moved on to a Telecaster. 30 odd years later I’ve never used a whammy bar. Until a kid learns a Beatles fake book and learns rudimentary scales and theory there really isn’t any reason for a whammy bar. If ever. Or, I’m just stupid. : )
this trem is just like the EVH guitar. That trem HAS to be flat. It can't be set up properly to be able to pull up on the trem. It should only go DOWN and not up. /sigh Jury rigging it is not the answer.
Nope, it's an original Edge, not a Floyd Rose, they have to be set that way when they're surface mounted, they have to float or they ruin the body finish and go out of tune.
hupur I think you're talking about surface-mounting a Floyd. You can do that with an Original Floyd Rose, but if you try it with an Ibanez Edge (the trem system in this video), it's going to scratch up the body finish and go out of tune. Dave set the trem on this guitar to the correct angle.
It is a flat neck radius. It does not need 12 thou release. You prefer to shim the neck then to give up that stupid 12 thou release that was invented for 7.25 radius. You made another banana neck Dave...with shim to. Oh my god !

I love 'em, too. I've got 4 RS125s from 83 - kinduv a Super 70s Alnico fetish.
I have to agree with @jack317, this is truly one of your best videos ever. A true Tour de Force of problem solving skills applied to a very challenging project. A real treat, thanks Dave!

Your efforts on guitars like that is amazing. ❤️ 🎸Both your playing and your dedication to help others rock! ❤️🎸
I have a roadstar 2 from 1984. The only strats that I've played that were better came out of the fender custom shop. They're pretty goddamn great.
According to the serial number my Roadstar 2 is an 82 with dual humbuckers and a coil split switch. It's a made in Japan guitar and may well be the best playing guitar I've ever owned.
Ive got one as well. One of the best guitars ive ever played.
@Arthur G. well it cant be worse than the time that I broke a fixed neck on a 7,000 custom shop neckhrough jackson the day I bought it.
I have an October ‘83 Roadstar II & I love it. Far better than the Strats of the era. It’s heavy as hell but I dig that.
I have this exact guitar, the RG440...made in Japan, excellent fiddle for sure!
You got me at the second neck shim... I almost cried for you.
I still have my 440 bought in '85 from Steve's Music in Toronto. Still a rocker!!!
Still got mine. The same in black. Bought it in Rexdale from Music Mecca in '85 also.
Man that guitar gives me flashbacks to the broke days of my early teens...
50/50 acetone and ATF. Or the Paul Gilbert method, ie leave it mounted and liberally hose it down with water displacement test #40.
Floyd Rose hated guitarists. His wife ran off with a cover band guitarist and he never got over it.
Fake news.
Her name was Slinky Pinky and her daddy was a Floyd
He tinkered with that guitar and it sure got her annoyed .
She took up with a poser and he took her to his Caddy
Slinky Pinky picked a rose cuz Floyd just ain't her Daddy
One of your best videos.
These are definitely great guitars and great work as always Dave.👍✌

Spray it with the release all, set it in the window sill for three days, open the window and toss it in the garbage
I have a fender floyd rose on one of my plus deluxes .what a pain trying to intonate it ,and some of the hex bolts would not lock the saddles down ???ended up putting washers on them
I love those "V" strap buttons!!! I used to sell these in a shope years ago. really nice guitars
You know any time I see an Edge bridge like that and the posts bottom out the first thing I would be looking for would be locking posts. Not sure if that particular guitar had it or not but pointier RG's definitely do. Possibly could have avoided a neck shim altogether.
that is an ibanez edge tremolo so its the last year they made the roadstar. then they just called it the RG and here we are
Yep - it says Edge right on it at 18:00.
By 25min in I was fully expecting Dave to lose his shit & smash this guitar.
Those where great axes back in the day
Feeling the frustration
The bridge is tilted forward and not parallel to the bridge from what i can see, thats wy the action is to high...tight the screws in the back and move the bridge backwards and re adjust...
Does Dave know the bridge has locking posts? Maybe he needs to insert the lock key and loosen the stud internally. This will give him more adjustment. Maybe.
I have the exact same kitchen towels ! Thanks !👍
Ok now that is funny!
Vinniedayhiker 😂Brexit brings out the best of this Brit . And The Three Bears .
I had a red one of those it had Jackson pickup's I didn't keep it very long but it played ok
I have no clue why RUclips decide to have a live chat on this pre-recorded video. It isn't a livestream, y'know?
great job on this one, man!!!
Floyd rose bridge needed PB Blaster! Cheers, Mike from Fernwood, BC, tonight
One more reminder why I'm glad that I sold my floyd rose equipped guitar - no more screwing around with this crap. I ended up getting a new guitar with a hardtail and never looked back.
Cool vid!! Pretty trippy Dave, prerecorded video with live chat!!
Hey, Dave, have you ever used stuff called "Break Free CLP" to clean and lubricate parts? Works a lot better than 3 in 1. Discovered it in the Army.
your pain is felt by many but once there in they stay in love you floatman
An 84 & 2 85 roadstars here, LOVE them.
But I don't have these issues as my guitarsenal is Floyd free.
(my household is uncontaminated ;^) )
Hey Dave, use PB Blaster instead of 3-1 oil. That stuff will free up anything. Hope you can get it up north!
Pb blaster is the shizz!
I remember in the late eighties everyone bought one of these, then tried to sell them to raise money to buy a JEM 777...
Really think you are awesome Dave. But I almost lost it when you banged on that Edge tremolo. Those things are worth something on eBay. Even Steve Vai went back to the OG Edge (not the crappy Edge II). Have a 1986 RS530 with an Edge.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff True that Dave.
Dave, you either really liked the guitar's owner or he paid you a wad to do all that crap. You have more patience than I do.
This video is why my one Floyd Rose guitar almost never gets played. Changing the strings is a project. Then try taking to an outdoor gig in the summer. Nothing like needing a hex key in the middle of the set to tune it.
think the hex is to hold the string ends, to tune the fine tuner you turn with finger and thumb don't you
Unlocking the nut when you run out of adjustment because the neck has moved in 85% humidity.
Thanks for the vid!
How big is the space between low & high e-string and humbucker supposed to be with this guitar?
Dave I have an 82 ibanez blazer beaut guitar best I have played. Kicks new fenders ass. Any idea what these are or have you seen them before cant find any info. Cheers love yo vids mate. From Australia
Deluded.
Sorry for all the grief, but I got some good laughs out of this one.
I have a 1983 Ibanez roadstar ii. It has a standard trem and a regular nut. I need to replace the nut but can't find any info on the nut specs anywhere
make one from scratch
Dave, you can pitch a bitch from anywhere on the field! Love it! Thanks for leaving everything in the video.
Cripes Dave, how much friggen time did this one take? I saw you paused the camera several time. Good job well done.
and that's why you should take care of your guitars
Your chording at the end sounded a little like, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"! LOL...
I have a roadstar II and trying to freshen it up but I’m having loads of trouble with the string sorted at the top of the neck. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thwang!!!!!!!! At around 11min I was waiting for one of those FR parts to go shooting across the shop and hear Dave’s aw shit again
Please tell us about ibanez rg 50 mij, if you had such a guitar.
i have that guitar. plays awesome.
Kind of nice to see someone else annoyed by a floyd rose. Therapeutic even.
I had a Kramer Baretta, and I stuck an EMG 85 in it and I learned to embrace the Floyd Rose. The setup is gonna exceed the value of that guitar, even though those are great guitars.
Haven't been able to stop laughing Dave, from about 9 minutes on ... gotta finish the video then Ill comment again. Davis world of FUN STUFF, you almost have more fun than I do removing asbestos. I cus a lot more tho
Floyd Rose is a learning curve, once its set , forget it . just dont break a string p
That Floyd needed some time in an ultrasonic bath.
hi guys im in the middle of building my dream strat and im a bit out of my depth with my custom wiring, does anyone know of a site or anyone that can do a custom wiring diagram if i tell them what i got and what i need it to do, i tryed the one on Guitarelectronics.com and they never did it or returned my emails :( so im looking for someone eles to help me
"Break Free" works wonders on really rusted out parts...
with a 12 inch radius neck, do you still use .012 on the relief? or do you go .010?
nevermind! the feeler gauge wasn't gold hehe
I had one of those. A good guitar but I got sick of the Floyd Rose.
They suck to set up, but once it's set up, it's an amazing device. Use good strings (Elixirs, Ernie Ball Paradigm series, etc) and spend 10 minutes breaking them in and they'll stay in tune within a couple of cents for months.
What did you use to degrease the inside of the cavity that holds the little block?
I was just playing one
I think that’s the first time I’ve heard the Petersen, or paid attention enough to notice it...my hearing kinda sucks
Hope Adsense is paying ya Dave! Watched (8) commercials this video!! CrazZY
That’s why I pay for premium. It’s so much better.
That’s why I pay for premium. It’s so much better.
Dave, if you need any antidepressants, just let me know, I'll send you a pack!
Would an ultrasonic cleaner have worked on that bridge?

You could have taken the whole saddle off the Edge bridge, and then just push the little block through. And if all else fails, use Coke. ;-)
Is this worth one of those iso soakers?
My brain hurts.
Wiped my bum lmao!
Fuck that guitar. 4 beers.
Comment #17. I made it in the top twenty finally. Woo who...Ibanez by Harbor Freight. Sorry, I got me a tele. Holding on with two fists.
A good ole' Toadcar! Thank god it doesn't have their goofy bridge on it.. those things sucks!
Soak it in Coca Cola.....
And...mayonnaise
I would have thrown that bridge against the wall and smashed it to bits. What a nightmare....
Put some "Naval Jelly" on your shelf . Then use it on that ass bridge.
RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!!
thats Edge not Floyd :D
A locking nut and a string tree?
It is a retaining bar. You set it low enough so that the strings don't go wildly sharp when the locking nut is tightened down
If you have a Floyd Rose-style locking nut, you need something to bring the string angles to a certain degree (compensated tuning machine heights, angled headstock, string retainer bar, etc) to avoid putting too much pressure on the string at the joint.
Jesus, I would never have the patience to work on that thing.I would have lost my temper and smashed it to pieces.

jonas brave “ Lex got ‘is wuckin’ mirds fuddled! “
Change broken string in the dark during a concert, ain't happening.
I'll stick to my telecaster.
I heard some Canadian chatter and showed up for Gord and Gregory Peck because I’m a fan.
What a pain, would just go buy another axe.
You bench top looks as if a puppy has been on it
Hated mine intensely. That battery was bullshit.
Get a Kahler !
floyds aren't designed to float
Drrrp
sorry i meant floyds that sit on the deck and not routed out beneath the fine tuner end
hupur I think you're talking about surface-mounting a Floyd. You can do that with an Original Floyd Rose, but if you try it with an Ibanez Edge (the trem system in this video), it's going to scratch up the body finish and go out of tune. Dave set the trem on this guitar to the correct angle.
A lot of Floyd haters on here
Vintage Ibanezs = great
Gooched up Floyd Roses = not so great
Hope it wasn't a 'love job'.
It is a flat neck radius. It does not need 12 thou release. You prefer to shim the neck then to give up that stupid 12 thou release that was invented for 7.25 radius. You made another banana neck Dave...with shim to. Oh my god !
