All of Inarius’ angelic traits were stripped away from him piece by piece. He lost status when he abandoned the heavens and the war to make sanctuary. I think being imprisoned for all that time rotted him mentally. Lillith broke him down physically. Now he could be made anew, fully consumed by hatred and rejection.

Similar to the theory in this vid, I too like to think inarius isn't dead. In hellsing anime when police girl lost her arm she formed this otherworldly looking limb to replace it with some kind of blood magic she inherited from Alucard. When inarius reborn in hell I think his wings will reform but in a similar visceral blood-like texture and hue. What I want to know is if we'll get to see what under the hood when he rises again😱😎

@mightymurph3949 This is a really good take! And horrifying to think about. Angels are regimented to a fault but Inarius is erratic. When you read his old lore entries he sounds like a desillusioned but well intentioned soldier instead of an angelic dictator.

That theory does sound good. Inarius I believe was definitely blinded by pride and a somewhat God complex. I was surprised to see him so desperate to return to the Heavens after being, well "sacrificed" by his fellow angelic commanders in order to obtain peace after the Sin War. Now, I'm new to this fascinating lore, but Inarius did kill Rathma (his son) and attempted to kill Lilith as a form of sacrifice or redemption acts to gain back his place in the Heavens, but even then, he was rejected once more. May be this could be the final straw for Inarius?
Anyways, I believe his character is very interesting and has a lot of potential so hopefully we'll see more of him in the future...

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx Год назад +15

      He wasn't simply sacrificed.
As Lilith told him, they simply don't even care about him any more.
They broke with him for the theft of the Worldstone and the creation of Sanctuary - the conception of the Nephalem was just another wrinkle adding on to that.
Honestly though I wish it had been humsns who delivered that blow - and specifically a Priest of Rathma.

Dark LORE Dash did a video about Heaven potentially already being overrun / destroyed by evil. It is shown in official artwork. Maybe Inarius heard no call from Heaven because it's already fallen. It's stated that Inarius was tortured in hell for 'a few millennia', so who knows what's happened to Heaven if the time scale is thousands of years.

    • @alexiaspies7107
      @alexiaspies7107 Год назад +6

@@W1nDs0R I definitely need to watch that video next then. Sounds interesting! I have a feeling the angels simply left Inarius to rot in Hell though and most likely did not pay close attention enough while Inarius managed to escape. The escape of Inarius from his imprisonment still feels like a gray area to me. But we may see more corrupted angels in the future as well.

    • @asimplewaffle7946
      @asimplewaffle7946 Год назад +10

Definitely a theory I can agree with. Diablo lore has always felt like a rewriting of western theology especially Catholicism. lets take a look at some theology tropes. Inarius x Lilith is a re imagining of Adam and Eve. Sanctuary is the retelling of the garden of Eden. The knowledge/catalyst to create said garden/sanctuary is the world stone/apple. The creation of life is forbidden and goes against the plans of the creator or can be seen as usurping his design. Inarius kills his first borne son (also a religious trope) instead of being commanded too do it. It is rewritten as Inarius' own belief that he would find redemption in doing so.(Abraham killing Issac.) Now this is my speculation but during the cut scene we see the faces of the damned contort and misshapen. I don't believe that is actually happening and what that imagery is expressing is Inarius' mental state. Which has been already weaken through a millennia of torture and Lilith's manipulation. (Notice how Lilith confronts him. She uses specific words to poke and prod at his insecurities. Where as Inarius is physically trying to Attack her.) Anyways lovely lore and a creative retelling of Western Theologies. I hope ya'll look forward to seeing where the writers take the story. Cheers friends.

I believe the angels knew Inarius escaped and thought they could use that to their advantage. This perspective makes me believe the angels manipulated Inarius to cause chaos in Sanctuary. They didn't want Inarius to be free, create another world for himself, or find love.

I honestly HOPE he comes back, because I absolutely loved his characterization and would have loved to see a lot more of him. Hell, I was hoping we would get to fight him during the end sequence of the campaign. Sadly, that didn't happen, but his cinematic with Lilith is by far my favorite of the entire game, maybe even the entire franchise. The way he just completely breaks down after realizing that the Heavens have turned their back on him (seemingly) and the way he screams in pure agony when Lilith rips him apart... Really powerful stuff. The only regret that I have is not having seen more of him throughout the campaign

That ending was perfection. Inarius’ fate felt natural. To want an image of being back in heaven, to pine for validation and approval from those who refuse to even heed his existence… it’s suffice to say he only “led” the cathedral for his own delusions. And only with humans’ worship and blind faith, could he feel slightly more important VS a discarded piece of trash. He really only used humans as steps in attempt to get back up to heaven.
And in the end, he literally left them all to die. Humans were only the scum underneath his boots and no more. Like Rathma, his children did not matter one bit. Let them all perish, like the father who said he’s going to get milk and never returns.
Still tragic to see him die that way. What beautiful work by the Diablo 4 team. Seriously in awe by their work.

Completely agree. I didn't notice until later play throughs but his armor, when he flies forward of the Cathedral Host and sets down among the demon throng. His armor, as shiny as it was, was pitted and grimy. Dirty. Not at all like the other angels. He had become corrupted and his armor reflected that. I think she might have forgiven him. Lilith. I heard it in her voice. There was sorrow there. But for the lack of remorse or regret for killing his own son. Their son. There was only his single minded obsession with returning to a place that no longer wanted him. She could see it but he couldn't.

He would likely inprison Lilith and have her tortured for all eternity, in sense making her the first victim of the Hell afterlife experience. But in all seriousness, what allowed Lilith to manipulate and control Inarius was him being an Angel. And we see as he becomes less holy and more corrupt how her control of him is weaken.

Love this theory. Another example of the demons possibly speaking very literally is when Wolfisto tells us that he's seen Inarius' true face and from that he knows that he and Lilith aren't so different. Mephisto saw Lilith as a tool to his grand scheme even if also a threat, I think the same is probably true for Inarius, this why he was released from eternal torment.
If Inarius does turn into a Satan figure, it could be a CEO/board situation. Inarius gets to be the face of hell, exacting his revenge on the heavens, and gets to believe he has command of the forces of hell. Meanwhile, while he is blind by his continued self-indulgences, the brothers really pull the strings from the shadows with less focus from the heavens.

Even from the Sin War trilogy he wanted to appear like he was doing the right thing and couldn't be questioned once he possessed the worldstone. He embodied the worst and most arrogant traits of the angels, and then carried this forward into D4. Obviously, trying to sell this sequel as Lilith being the "big bad" was probably a better strategy than just starting off with Inarius being such; anyone who read the novels knows he was as bad as her or worse. I would like to see him return, but I cannot support him being the big bad. It seems like wasted potential. If anything, I was hoping for Imperius to turn evil and be given a redemption. Valor could have easily become wrath, which definitely seemed opposed to justice.

So funny thought on this, during one Diablo 4 panel they showed what seemed to be the Crystal Arch looking like it was demonic, saying hell had come to the heavens due to what the Prime evil did in Diablo 3. To piggyback off this theory, maybe that wasn't heaven after all but Inarius's hell where he makes his own sort of pagan crystal arch?

Exactly what happened in the cinematic, except instead of skin, it was his essence stretched apart and set upon the walls and floor

I really like this idea. In so many ways it it fits and you have to ask "can an angel be killed". It is almost like all of the "killing" just fills a respawn pool in this world so at some point all of them just show back up in some form. The question becomes what is the power level vs the Primes and how do they deal with it. Then you get into the lower ranks, will this be a case of needing to really flex and destroy large parts of the Burning Hells? If done right it could be epic.

Diablo Immortal - Hate or Love it, already explored about fallen angels in a more detailed way. Verathiel and her cadre of angels where caught in the story and it was said that the "Light" of the Angels can be used to create Demons - hence Inarius turning into a Demon is a no brainer. As for him turning into a facsimile of the Butcher in diablo 1, I don't think that will be the case. Malthael, when he fell into darkness still retain most of his looks, and I think this will happen with Inarius as well - he may rise to become an evil Seraphim, but I doubt he'll look like some sort of abomination. Case in point, it was shown by Skarn in Diablo Immortal when he dealt the final blow to fully extinguish Shannox light, another angel caught by him, who the "Shard Seeker" cannot save anymore since the corruption was too far. He became an edgy version of his Angel form, given that Shaddox is a powerful Angel by his own right.
I think what happened to Inarius in D4 is the same as what happened to Shannox - only since we're talking about Lilith here, I think he trapped Inarius essence instead or she might not have known that letting Inarius get absorbed will lead to a true corruption, heck I will not be surprised if it is actually Mephisto's plan all along.

Lilith, the daughter of haterd, that doesnt mean she inherit that same trait as Mephisto. Her dominant sin is... well sin, not hatred... but sin. She was the mother of sanctuary quite literately she decieved Inarius she was the one to decide the existance of sanctuary. Inarius on the other hand, hated what he have been seduced to do. He see humans as weak uniportant creatures that need to be set right by killing them. Really thats what he did to his son and even literately called it "I set things right." in the Inarius vs Lilith cinematic. Inarius was the Haterd on sanctuary and the light spear wielded by Lilith pierced Hatreds heart as the prophecy fortold. The story is amazing so far and i hope banishing or "killing" Lilith is the dumbness of the main protagonist who doesnt really know shit. If Lilith doesnt come out of this as the good guy in future DLCs i really think that would be such a wasted potential for something that can be the greatest diablo story ever made.

I mean in the part when you arrive at the realm of damnation, the light of the angels seems to be used as fuel by Skarn and the living "forests" that absorbed them. Even i remember there was an angel that get all his light drained or something becoming a twinsted version of himself you have to put down.

The problem I have with Inarius being "Satan" are these points:
I know... 12 days ago.. but here's my thoughts and even an alternative theory to onsider (see D):
    A) Diablo is more/less translated as Satan. If I'm not mistaken, Lucifer/Satan was also an archangel. In the Diablo universe, the archangels are the Council. Inarius is NOT an archangel. That doesn't mean this theory can't happen though since Blizzard can do whatever they want with their game, but if they are going to mirror it then I would say this is a strong reason why this theory isn't sound but I'll entertain anyway.
    B) The Prime Evil is "The Big Bad" from Diablo 3 - combined of all Lords of Hell. Diablo easily schooled Imperius at the Heavens in D3. What makes you think Inarius would have a chance?
    C) Inarius had a son with Lilith and then attempted to not only kill Rathma, but attempted to off Lilith. Is that really a Satan/Lucifer thing to do? Technically Rathma would be the "Devil's son" / Anti Christ.
    D) What if, instead, the "Angels" are the 4 horsemen instead? Death, Conquest, War, Famine. We've had Death as Malthael. Imperius isn't that far off from being Wrath which (in a way) can be pointing at War. 3rdly there's Conqeust. What if Tyreal was Conquest in that he was aiding humanity in Sanctuary to attempt to turn tide vs The Lords of Hell? You could make the same argument that instead of Tyreal that instead it would be Inarius since he did, after all, acted on the "prophesy" by killing Rathma. So the question would be, who would represent Famine yet be hiding as an "angel".. or do we want to count that as Lilith (because of the eating of the blood rose petals as opposed to food and since she serves herself instead of the Lords of Hell). We can probably safely rule out Auriel and Itherael although I believe it's stated Auriel had a love affair with Mephisto (maybe she'll make an appearance in D4 expansion?). In a bit of a stretch/reach, let's assume Inarius is indeed "Conquest". Tyreal was making hunger comments in the Adventure Mode.. so maybe? You can't safely state Izual, let alone Urzael. Perhaps it's an Angel / Lietenant of one the archangels we haven't met yet that would be the 4th Horseman if *this* theory is true? It's something to look into, I think.
I find it interesting the scoundral follower (Lyndon) is in Diablo 4.. even the new "Johanna". I have to wonder if we'll see The Templar, and the Enchantress. The latest data mine reveal have strong hints that suggest followers are coming - maybe they come back in the expansion or maybe even the seasons?
Thoughts on the 4 horsemen theory vs the Inarius will become "Lucifer"?

I like the theory but I wouldn't bank on it. I also aren't sure on Lilith's words on Heavens being silent. She's entertaining to watch but... she's not an honest character. I don't think its hard to tell she didn't necessarily have true noble intentions when she gained followers. I also think she might of not necessarily saying the truth that the heavens are silent. The gates are closed, when the devs said that. That didn't make me think they are apathetic to Inarius's calls or just in a hell state(I don't buy that either, I feel like they'd hint at that). We don't honestly know how the Heavens feel about Inarius since he was given away. That would be interesting to find out.
I did see a comment on this same video talking about a redemption story, and I would love that for Inarius but... I do not think that is what is going to happen. I feel ok with how Inarius was handled, his pride/ego was very obvious to me throughout the game.

Blood rains down, Elias is stabbed in the heart with a candle stick thing, and then right after this Inarius is at the church with Donan. He’s also talking about the prophecy that we just saw.
Idk I think there’s a lot to this and also lilith’s blood is in the player. Very much following along with communion at church like Jesus said at the last supper (my blood and flesh wine and bread) obviously there’s like 9 million layers to this and maybe I’m going a lot deeper than the writers intended but there’s so much stuff here.

  • @rakshithanand8262

It's an interesting theory, and I have another one:
It is clear now that, if not dead, Inarius has hit rock bottom. Everything he ever believed is either gone or betrayed him, he has neither the blind idealism of his younger days nor the rabid desparation and pride that he showed in the main story. This leaves one of two choices; either he goes off the deep end as you outline... or he is forced to finally confront his choices and reckon with his mistakes.
Obviously I don't think that this is the most likely scenario, but there is so much potential in Inarius being forcibly turned into a mortal (his wings *were* seemingly torn off) and coming back, not for revenge, but for real atonement. Being forced to live like the mortals he never properly understood before. This could give a lot of depth to his character and set him up as a foil to Lilith- where she stubbornly insisted that it was only her who could save humanity, Inarius could be the 'parent' who finally accepts that their children have outgrown them. A meeting between Inarius and Tyrael/Inarius becoming a Priest of Rathma are optional, but are natural continuations of this arc.
After all, what is better- to be born good (as Inarius used to think) or to overcome the evil in your nature through great effort?

The "becoming mortal" thing has been done. He reminds me of Apollyon the mad angel. If i were writing for Blizzard I would make him become Inarius the mad Angel and make him out to be the boogie man of angels and demons. I would have the souls that are gathering around him, affect him with their despair. Being in contact with so many mortal souls would have a profound affect on him. I would not have him become a corrupt angel that turns into a demon. I would make him out to still be a being of light but be a "hellish light". One fueled by mortal despair and abandonment.
The problem with the way he asked for the heavens to protect him is that the place is in a mess right now after Diablo just ran through it. If they don't retcon all of Diablo 3 then we all know that the high heavens just got wrecked. So they don't have time nor the resources to hear or help him.

Moreover you could argue the symbolism of Lilith's wings in the background as she is about to pierce Inarius' heart with his own spear, feels having more meaning to it. In fact it feels more closer how Tyrael becoming mortal looks like than anything relating to a death. Sure it was brutal af from Lilith to do something like that, which is partly why I love the cinematic.

What we got in D3 is emoTyrael and insane for no actual reason Imperius - defeated yet still threatening the Nephalem. What is he if not an utter idiot to threaten a much superior to him being?

Thinking about the one thing that could be the essence of the Cathedral of Light as we see it, the zealots very much embody the concept of wrath (in the ways they are shown to practice their faith and the way they fight).
The Diablo franchise geniusely characterized wrath as a potentially terrible (like in Imperius' case) but mostly good force (like in the Crusader and Paladin's case).
But, let us remember that "Wrath" is a sin. One of the Mortal Sins.
And what is wrath but a form of anger empowered by a sense of righteousness?
And what is left when that righteousness (often imagined) finally falls?
All that is left is Hatred.
The Cathedral Knights' might was very badass until the object of their faith fell, then they didn't lose any time before cowering and dying by the claws of Hatred. Their delusions could not stand against the truth of Darkness. Unlike genuine courage and will. Things that only few have.

The way I see it. Light's spear did indeed pierce hatred's heart. And I think that theory about Inarius is a good one.

I can see him coming back as evil, but as a demon lord when all the other evils essential quality is that they come from the heads of tathamat and Inarious doesn’t … I’m skeptical

Maybe it could work as Tathamat was made from Anu’s Evil

If i remember right, wasn't it mentioned in lore that when an angel or demon die, their essence just reforms after 30 years in heaven/hell? as well. Lilith did say Inarius "belongs in hell". Also, isn't it a lore fact that when you tear off an angel's wings, it doesn't kill them for good but is like a softkill and guarantee's their essence will reform? Also in the cinematic when Inarius is asking the heavens to protect him, it looks kinda like their trying to beem him up last minute while lilith is dissolving his wings. Kinda like the beem up heimdal does for thor in marvel movies. My own theory is that in those last seconds. The heavens watched, waiting for lilith to kill inarius, only to realize she's going to kill him in a way that will turn him into a fallen demonic angel so they try to extract him before its to late for him to turn into an even stronger monstrosity.

When it exactly do they try to beam him up?
Also damn that evil, they only interfere when a replacement wouldn’t arrive

@@gameover9390 When he asks his brothers to save him please. Lilith grabs his wings to keep him held down and says "no, you belong in hell". She's both holding him down from being beamed up to heaven while melting his wings and sending his essence to hell. When she says NO its because they're trying to save him in that instance from being perverted into a fallen angel like Izual. I feel they were waiting to see if lilith would kill him for his crimes out right, or if Inarius would earn his redemption through killing lilith. When an angel dies they typically don't have that bright light that makes them look like they're in a ray of sunlight/solar burst. Looking at the angels that died in D3 act 4. Inarius wasn't an archangel or a member of the angiris council, so he shouldn't of had any kind of special death effect. Look at tyreal, When he tore his wings off to choose mortality, there was a bit of a effect that happened but nothing big. Also there's a split second clip in the end credits that shows a new devilish looking figure after mephisto's clips, Imo its either lilith's brother, or a demonic Inarius.

Another detail to emphasize your theory, is that Inarius hates mankind, just like lucifer hated.

Personally I always considered "Diablo" to be " The Devil " but ..... I can see your point of View Dark Lore. Diablo just means "Devil". He might as well be just a Super Demon (or something).
However, though I didn't truly think about it too much You are right when it came to Inarius...how is story was cut short... an Un-Epic ending especially compared to Lillith. Inarius is JUST as Important as the Mother of Sanctuary so he should of been more Heavily involved in the story campaign then what he was.
Shoot we should of fought him or Something. We had more interactions with Angels in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 then in 4.
