Pamela Hardy, more commonly as Jungle Pam, was in drag racing for only four short years, yet her name remains iconic nearly four decades later. That's major longevity for someone whose main claim to fame was backing up a race car while scantily clad.
Jungle Pam ran the roads as the yin to Jungle Jim Liberman's yang. She was the salt to his pepper. We think you get the drift.
As much as she's enjoyed life as an ordinary citizen of West Chester, Pa., for the last four decades or so, drag racing fans have clamored for drag racing's ultimate backup girl. The day she stepped in front of Liberman, scantily clad, she was sentenced to a life of anything but ordinary.
In this premiere episode of Legends: The Series, Season Three, Jungle Pam discusses those days of barnstorming drag racing and life on the road. She touches on drag racing as she sees it, and the loss of Jungle Jim, a loss she still feels pain for all these years later.

Pam might not of thought she was a rock star. SHE WAS!! In the eyes of drag racing fans in that golden age she was a star. She is an icon now. What a time in history.
A strong woman isn’t a loud woman. She isn’t pushy nor is she offensive for the sake of being noticed or heard.
Listening to Pam, I see an intelligent, thoughtful woman that experienced exactly what she wanted. “This is my life”. Live it Pam!

We lived about a mile from irwindale. Every Friday night when my father would hear the burnouts we would be off to the track!
Those were the best times of my life and thank you so much.
Jungle Pam was never regarded as slutty uor cheap by any of the fans,, and while yes we all thought she was very hot you would know that she was Jim's girl and you better not disrespect her.
As far as her clothes... that's that's pretty much the way normal girls dressed back then.

Used to go to Atco Dragway in N.J. back in the 70's to watch the funny cars run. Saw Jungle Jim & Jungle Pam there. Man . . . she was hot! As much of a show stopper as the funny cars were. Gotta luv em both. R.I.P. JJ Much respect!
I had the pleasure of meeting her and Jungle Jim at York US 30 Dragway in York, Pa. summer of 1971. The drag strip was the York County Airport. If the racers were staged, and a small plane had to land, they cleared off the drag strip to allow the plane to touch down, then resumed racing. The airport is still in operation, but no longer doubles as a drag strip. She was always dressed in hotpants and a thin top. When I met her she had a fishnet vest on with nothing underneath. Quite a sight for a 19 year old gearhead. I also had the pleasure of seeing them race at Maple Grove Raceway, just outside of Reading Pa. The high dollar corporate sponsors ruined the imaginative spirit of the weekend racers. I only attend nostalgia drags and gasser shootouts now. I used to race my 1971 Dodge Demon 340 in the stock classes. I miss it dearly.
P.S. my girlfriend was less enthused about meeting her for obvious reasons. A slight twang of jealousy. My drag racing came to an end when I was drafted into the Army in 1972.
Jim and Pam will always be a fond memory of those times. Thanks for being you.
Cheeky Monkey I was only 7 years old at the time and I remember seeing them on the cover of magazines my dad would buy also my dad took me to the races was a bit to young to remember but as I got older and see the magazines it was only then I remembered , when I got older I found where my dads stash of older magazines and I read every damn issue they were all a very big part of my childhood , Shirley , big daddy , Don , blue max , even the paint jobs set the time for the times .
She didn't even meet Jim until 1972.

I met Jungle Pam at a Car Show in York PA a few years back where I had one of my cars on display. We had a chance to talk for 10 minutes, and she was super nice and easy to talk with. She is a true SS....Super and Special....
Pam was there during the golden age of drag racing - when drivers actually drove their cars instead of computers. Being my father drag raced Pro/Super Gas at the time, I remember them all as I was growing up - Cha-Cha, Snake & Mongoose, Jungle Jim, Hawaiian Punch, Grumpy, Garlits, etc. - and it was always a treat to see them when they came to the track! My very first, close-up "nitro experience" was watching Don Prudhomme warm up his funny car in the pits after an engine rebuild - eyes watering/burning, ears ringing, the smells. I loved it!

In what fuckin' world does a racecar have a computer driving it? There maybe computers running the engine and transmission...past that, driving is driving...I am not alone in saying that it's safer nowadays and it's a good thing...advancements in technology mean that I don't go to as many funerals as I did back then...hell, maybe drivers like Jungle would still be here today with all of the technology...

Saw Jim and Pam many times in the 70s at New England Drag Way. They were entertaining and good clean fun! One Sunday after winning the main event, Jim did a U-turn in the shutdown area and did a wheel stand all the way back toward the starting line .

In 1972 I was a recent disabled veteran. I worked on hot rods my friends raced in the 60s.
I remember when you first made the scene.
You were so cool to watch as you did your thing. Watching this interview brought So much back from the bad old days of racing. Those were free wheeling times.

Saw her do her job, and do it well at OCIR and Pomona many, many times back in the 70's, a time when "streaking" down the track was also part of the expected entertainment for the evening - LOL Agree with her 100% about the NHRA and Big Corp. I also couldn't agree more about the 60's and 70's being a special time in the USA for this sport. Really glad I found this interview, as she was a part of this important history in America. Yes, Pam ... You and Jim did put on a good show! I WAS there, and I WAS in the stands and got to witness match drag racing in the 70's. It was the Greatest Show on Earth! Thank you Jungle, Pam, Don, Shirley, Snake, and ALL those who gave us all goose bumps!
The first time I saw Jungle race I was 12yo in 1977. The track was Maryland International Dragway in Budds Creek MD. My brother was driving for Rick Stanbaugh in the " New Generation" funny car and he raced Jungle that day. Jungle won and my brother threw the rods out at about 400 feet but I get to say that we actually raced the great one. I will never forget that day as long as I live.

PAM IS RIGHT, NO FUN , NO ENTERTAINMENT, ALL CORPORATE MONEY ORIENTED AND TO EXPENSIVE. 35.00 BUCKS FOR A TICKETS , DIRT HOLES FOR PARKING . PAM IS RAW AND HONEST , THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.
35.00 a ticket & the best access to the teams of any form of Motorsport. Try F1 & see what 35.00 gets you. I’m not in any way standing up for the debacle NHRA puts on but no other racing comes close for the price. PS I’ve been to both tracks in Texas & Bandimere & never had to park in the grass. That falls on track owners, not NHRA.
But you can’t deny the NHRA was very good at making drag racing more visible in terms of coverage. Wide World of Sports had it on TV most weekends (and ESPN later on) even if it was in tape-delay format, that’s where I first saw it.
35 Bucks? When there was a top fuel event in Phoenix I was gonna go but decided otherwise when I found out admission with a pit pass was TWO HUNDRED FIFTY bucks!

My wife and I love this episode and have watched several times over. Jungle Pam was the stuff, and she really still is! She had a life that just doesn't happen anymore. We call those the good ole days, and they really were. Times were fun and easier to say the least. My wife said she would have hopped into that Vette in a hot second and can you imagine if Pam hadn't jumped into it that day?! I'm glad Pam has all those fantastic memories. Jungle Jim is up there looking down and smiling. I don't think his life would have been the same without her in it. He knew it too. Wish he was still here to tell the stories. I'll bet he'd say Jungle Pam was the one who got away! Peace.

Seeing my first funny car race at Epping, NH and Jungle Jim was there , Pam was beautiful and Jungle put on a show. Will never forget.

I happened to go to two events Jungle ran in the early 70's. Pam was the most entertaining thing there. She just killed it when Jungle came up to the line. Everyone waited for that. She was approachable, friendly, had a definite wild child vibe and was very sensual. Cars and Sex, as she says. On the way there, you'd hear guys saying how she wasn't particularly gorgeous. Odd how they never took their eyes from her in those amazing shorts and shirts. I always thot "so where's the running commentary now?" Everyone wanted to take Pam home. Everyone. She was something to behold.

Back in 72 to 74 my mom worked for Jerry Jardine at Jardine headers, and he gave us pit passes to the match races at Irwindale one Summer. It was my first encounter with Jungle Jim and Jungle Pam. As a 11 year old budding adolescent, I feel in love. Not only with drag racing, but with Jungle Pam. My bedroom walls carefully included here pictures among the dozens of dragsters. To this day if a gal doesn't have long brown hair and an hour glass body I'm just not interested, and if she puts on a pair of glasses and looks under my car... forget about it.
I find this really insightful, she effectively has told all of us why "Street Outlaws" has taken the sport a different direction....She's WAY ahead of the curve understanding the entertainment side of the business. GREAT Lady!

It is nice that Pam gave this interview... It has now been between 45-50 years since their time at the top of their game. And what is so nice is Pam somehow re-created that same free-spirited feeling that they had back in the early to mid 70's... The music score was perfect at the end of this interview... I didn't start watching drag racing til in the 80s but I love watching these videos of the guys and gals that was busting their humps racing...and pam was rocking the daisy dukes way before there was a daisy duke. Great video

pam, i was a young man when me and my brothers would go to cecil county dragway, in cecil county md. we were there many times in the late 60's and early 70's. saw jungle and you many times. got a chance to talk to you and jungle once there in the pits. i got to meet alot of the legends back then. went to all the coke-cola cavalcades everytimr they were there. used to go there even before i could drive. my parents would drop me and my younger brother off at cecil county. it was a magic place and time. out of all of the drivers i talked to, garlits was an asshole, he didnt want anyone hanging around his car. you and jungle jim were real classy people. met bruce larson. me and my younger brother had our pictures on hot rod magazine cover back there at cecil county when bruce was doing his fire burnouts. back then you could stand right behind the cars. it was great. the ground would shake and the cars would blast off. well anyway back to bruce larson fire burnouts. we were standing alittle to close behind bruce the first time we saw him light them up. we lost alot of our hair. it was awesome. stood behind color me gone once when he was doing a burnout. we both looked at each other and we were covered in little balls of rubber. was there when jungle jim was in his 69 camaro and set the then et record at that time at cecil county, he didnt back it up cause he wiped out the timing lights at the end of the track. it was so great. met bill grumpy jenkins many times. loved his matchracing with the fords and dodges/plymouths. i dont think he ever lost. saw him thru his old reilable 409 days, up till his vega pro stock days. i have always been a chevy guy. still remember all the cars and drivers from back in the day. they used to take the dragsters half way down the track when they started them , they would turn around, go back to the starting line turn around again, stage and race. wow it was a great time to be alive. my mom let me use her movie camera once and i took movies of the cars at cecil one year. think i might still have them old 8mm film. not very good movies but wow. there i was, taking movie pictures of my favorite thing to do. watch drag racing. in case you get to read this pam, let me thank you and jungle for making a young mans summers so eventfull. absolutely loved. thank you and jungle for being such nice people.

This documentary video; had me thinking about/of Carly Simon, I use to see her in a 1990 Mad magazine. It's about getting Carly Simon, to receive Lisa Simpson eye implants.
It's not so much the social media itself, it's more that most, if not all, businesses set out to get an angle on consumers mostly for their benefit. In many cases, there are similar products that would better suit you, but they try to convince the consumer to get theirs knowing it has shortcomings. When was the last time you went to a talk to a financial manager who wasn't trying to move you into the products that made them the highest commissions? In the past, people and businesses put out products that were the best they could make, and provided the best service they could provide according to your needs. Those days are pretty much gone except for the odd mom and pop operation.
It is a pre packaged cellophane wrapped dog turd. Tin eared, graph paper brained accountants, not 1 ounce of integrity. You notice soon as a corporation gets a hold of an organic idea after they hold out big fiat bucks, it is ruined.

Drag Racers back in the day were really gypsys who took their outlaw show from greasy streets to the strip and everyone admired their audacious machines and the skill it took to build and drive them. Jungle Pam is a wonderful spokeswoman for those times and one very cool lady.

Pam wasn't just the back-up girl either. She often helped work on the cars between runs.
Man that was an honest and down to earth interview. I was involved in local drag racing but never got to see Jungle Jim or his side kick. I wish I had.

What a fantastic lady and story. Thanks for making and sharing this. Not too long ago they used to do the "winter warm-up" top fuel testing in the winter at (what used to be) Moroso in Palm Beach Gardens. I always felt like I was stepping back in time a bit. Felt dangerous. No commercials, no sponsors, no bullshit, just in your face top fuel runs at night. You could walk right up to and touch the cars in the pits and stand right up against the track and it was pretty mental. It felt like something could go sideways at any time. Miss that a lot, wish they'd bring it back. I imagine that was a little taste of what it must've been like back then. Not all "progress" is a good thing. Her comments about things being PC has ruined a lot more in this country and this world than just drag racing.

Sometimes things are "just meant to be" in life. The way "Jungle" Pam met "Jungle" Jim is a perfect example. I believe in these kind of coincidences in life because of the way my wife and I met. I was working in a small electronics equipment store that had silver tinted windows so she couldn't see me inside restocking shelves. I wasn't more than probably three feet away from the windows and she wasn't more than two or three feet away from them. She had just sat on a city bench that was covered in dust that she didn't notice until after setting down on it. She then noticed the mirror like finish of the tinting on the store windows and turned around, stuck her gorgeous butt out while looking over her shoulder to see if it was dusty, and then patted it off making it jiggle! This was in 1977 and she was wearing the usual "short shorts" of the era, with a little bit of each cheek hanging out slightly! She didn't even know I was there, but boy I came running out of the store thinking she was actually showing off for me! Either way we have been married going on 46 years now, have four children, and six grandchildren!
No body wore those shorts like Pam. She thrilled us as much as the cars back then when things were still simple and the girls were something to behold. Pam was sooo real~!! Thanks Pam for being who you are and thousands and thousands of real men will never forget you. And thanks to C tv for putting this out there for all to relive some great memories of Drag Racing's Hey Day.
I would say daisy duke did(catherine bach) wore them pretty damn well, but she was roughly from the same era
@@a4000t Yes but Daisy Duke wore custom hose with hers' and It was all Pam in hers' and Pam had the Hooters to go with them beautiful legs and Butt. Pam was much more lustful than Daisy~!!
I miss the 70's, the people, life, everything was so much better than todays BS! I was a motocross racer that wanted to be a funny car driver like Jungle, Brutus, Chi-Town Hustler, Ramchargers, but my family didn't have the money. When I was a kid, I did meet Lew Arrington and Clare Sanders, they were working on the Shark Corvette Funny Car that day, I really wanted to see the Brutus Firebird car that day. Jungle was supposed to be there, but he didn't show up. Almost got to meet Jungle. It was Clare Sanders that right after I met him started driving the Jungle's second funny car and he won the 69 Winternationals. Many don't know that Jungle Jim was the original driver of the Brutus funny car, the GTO. Jungle was from the city I lived in as a kid, Sunnyvale, CA.
WOW! A very moving story! I starting Drag Racing in the 60's while still in high school. I miss those days of "Run what u Brung" Hell,most of us drove our cars to track, if u blew something u went home via chain, maybe no clutch or with only second gear....LOL!
Met Jungle Pam few years back at Reading. Such a down to earth person . I said I was hoping to meet you one day. She came back with, I always around. No ego at all. . I asked Pam to sign that famous picture with the blue Vega And then asked if it was ok to to get a photo with you. . I told her your a legend and she smiled. And yes she did listen to me telling her back in the day as a kid of 10 , Jim and her had me hooked on racing.I did think Jim had a Camaro? But she said how about that Vega. She is so right about the NHRA today.Put her in charge and i'm sure the sport would see many positive changes ,and fans would come back. We need more Jungle Pams!

I remember when I was a younger, when my dad took my brothers and I to the drag races . We were and still are into high performance drag racing. Anyways , I remember when we saw jungle Jim race here in El Paso Texas .... Will always remember Jungle Jim’s Car !!!! Never know him 😔 . Nice Video !!!!
