I'm 74, and after playing for years through my valve amps I bought the head. I love it, great amp for the money. I like the sounds I can get, very flexible.
I really like the styling of this amp. has a scifi look and old school Vox vintage at the same time. Good tones too. I'm eager to see where Vox goes next with their Nutube amps
Vox are making some really cool amps lately. I got a mini super beatle amp while ago. It has newtubes in it, best little amp I've ever had and half the cost of a leading brand five watt valve amp. I have three of those and they are awesome too, but the vox mini super beatle holds it's own. I was very impressed and I'm a valve amp guy till now. I think vox has nailed the new tube stuff. Even feels like the big boys. Thought that demo sounded very cool.
I have one of these, and I really like it. I also have an AC15 that I dearly love. After the power and then the preamp tubes went and I replaced them, it sounds sooooo good. I got this Nutube amp because the one new Marshall amp I got was defective out of the box (showed up just after the return days ran out), and no one seems to know how to fix it. I bought the Fender Champ 5-watt, one-knob wonder (yes, the hideously expensive, hand-wired one), and that was also defective out of the box. Besides normal tube replacement, my Vox amps always work when you turn them on. Anyway, as for this amp. I play mostly on ch. 1, and really like that. You do have to play with the knobs for a while, but you can pretty much eliminate the solid-state-ish sounds when you want a bluesy or lower-gain, classic rock tone. It sounds good quiet or loud (I usually play with the attenuator one notch down from the full 150 watt setting.) When a pro musician friend dimed channel two and fooled around for a while, you really do get that Vox bark on both channels. (He plays an AC30 a chunk of the time.) The solid state sounds show up a little more on ch. 2 at lower volumes, but they are growing on me a bit, as it is not the usual fizzy garbage sound of most solid state amps. Honestly, this doesn't sound as good as a tube amp, but not by much. Of the amps I have, I play this one the most. Plus, the Celestion Redback speaker sounds good, you don't have to worry about putting hours and power on your tubes, and it doesn't get hot (No big need to worry about glass tubes cracking, etc. from temperature changes in our cold Wisconsin winters.) Great video!
Thanks Shane. Best, most detailed review of this amp I've found. Every tone was explored, and I particularly liked the attenuator demo. This might be the answer to finding the 'Holy Grail'; a giggable amp that's playable at bedroom volumes too.
I've got the MV50AC that also uses the nutube technology. Attach that to a 2x12 cab with celestions and it's just AC30 with budget. Just got myself a Tokai Love Rock as well, awesome guitars!!

From the comments I've read here, it looks like you've convinced a few listeners to buy. In my experience, Shane's demos give a great representation of the tone you'll get in real life. Shane's recent review of the Artist TweedTone20R, plus their 100 day no quibble returns deal tempted me enough to order one. I've had it for a few weeks now and am soooo chuffed with the tone. (It also sounds fabulous in a wet-dry pair with my AC30 on the tremolo channel. Every guitarist should try that before they die :) I'd also agree with Shane's review of the Vox AV30. I had one, but it wasn't to my taste. His demo gave a good representation of its tone too. I reckon if you like the sound of an amp in one of Shane's demos, you're not going to be disappointed when you hear it in the flesh. YMMV though, of course (disclaimer)
I don’t quite understand why you’d label a Vox amp as mid scooped. A Fender is mid scooped. A Vox isn’t particularly mid scooped. It’s rather mid heavy, imo. That’s also why OD pedals with a mid hump aren’t particularly suited for Vox amps. I do like your demos, Shane, but I didn’t understand your assessment of a Vox amp as mid scooped.
Yes. This is correct. I've left the same comment as yours a couple of times. The vox sound has no pronounced midscoop, at least not like the fender mid scoop which is deep and wide. I prefer vox because the low end is already filtered out, so to speak (ain't got none). And the EQ profile lends itself to a crisp sound even when pushed.
Wow ! It better be good for the price. Most people play in a bedroom/livingroom. Play out once in a while. If I was going to spend this, I think I'd buy that new SS Fender ToneMaster Twin. Great video Shane. Wonderful playing. Blues On.... 💙 I must admit I do like the Vox sound generally.
Hi Shane, thanks for another detailed demo. I am a Vox man , having an AC15HW1. I was surprised to see a G12H instead of the usual G12M. Knowing the 12H makes me think the missing mids (and some bass as well) are due to the H. To my ears this amp sounds more of an AC 15 , not an AC30, do you agree ? Looking for a battle between the MVX150 vs AC15.

150 Watt class D isn't the same as a class A or AB power stage. That's why people always say tube amps are louder than solid state, because tubes are inherently class A or AB while cheap solid state amps prioritize efficiency and therefore use a class D power stage. The Katana is one good example of a class AB solid state that is as loud as any tube amp with the same power rating.
People talk about Nutubes as if they are solid state, but they really are valves. They operate just the same, but at far lower power levels. This is a valve amp, but the valves aren’t made of glass. That’s the only real difference.
Love my MVX150, and being in a position of running a music shop, I have options, but settled on the Vox. (Don't shoot me but it also handles Bass guitar very nicely, at realistic volumes of course). Nice video as always Shane. Kia Ora, from NZ.
Shane providing some of the best and honest reviews of the web! Good stuff, thanks for this review! Edit: although the power attenuator is nice, a true headphone output would've been nicer as it is what I use on my Blackstar 60 Watt amp and gives better feeling of what I am playing (to me personally) without annoying my neighbours

Hahah nice review! I have to say, though, I married right. My wife buys my gear! AND she sits in guitar shops for 3 hours while I try stuff. Yup, I did something right!! Sorry... don't mean to brag...!
The rear oriented knobs are great if you travel with your Knob Adjuster roadie. He can just stand behind the amp and fiddle with your knobs until you’re content. Otherwise, you have to fiddle with your own knobs (say your Knob Adjuster dude quit), and it’s not so fun.
Sounds like all the same tones my Vox P15SMR head can get. And that didn't cost $800. I'd like to hear the head through a decent cab though. Great playing, as always!
Shane, you said that this amp was not that loud for 150w,maybe you could hook it up to a external 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet and maybe it will sound louder, closer to the 150w amps output at full setting?
My guess is that it should be volume equivalent to a Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb. What are your observations, since you've tried both? Given the cost and weight, I would probably opt for the Tone Master Twin, if I wanted to spend the same money, or the Tone Master Deluxe, if I wanted to save a little more weight, money and have similar output.
Sounds and looks really good to me mate ! The volume of this demo through my laptop speakers is the loudest I've ever heard ! Great demo as always ! :-) (Is the Fender ToneMaster still your fave of recent amps ?)
It would be nice if you could compare it with external speakers. Speaker efficiency and amplifier class can affect sound intensity. I have a Vox VT40 and there's a significant increase in volume switching from class A to class AB.
Great review mate! I have a question for you if you are so kind to answer. I have a VOX AC30CH (pure valve) head that use to create my basic tone before adding effects via the FX loop. From there I go to my Helix, add effects, and then back to the head to end in my absolutely gorgeous sounding VOX-V212C (2x12 greenbacks). This sounds surreal …but… It weights a tone! and I need 2 as I play in stereo. As I am using my Helix to complete the tone, I am looking for a combo amp that will allow me to go from the Helix out straight to a power amp. I will never be using the pre-amp section of that combo, just the return in and the amp section. Remembering that my hears are accustomed to Greenbacks (and alnico blue). Do you reckon I could use a couple of these MVX150C1 (as I mix in stereo) and sound remotely as good as the greenback cab sounds? You also says it does not feel like 150wats (which is fine) ..do you reckon I will miss the stupid high volume the AC30 creates or it should be ok? Assume money is not an issue but weight it. I loved the video mate. A true Aussie hero. Cheers mate.
My understanding of them is they're a bit like a fluoro tube and last a very long time (60000hrs or there abouts). Other parts in the amp will probably break before these (the nutubes will probably outlast most of us)!
Shane, have you demoed any of the Vox mv50 amps yet? I have the clean model and it sounds amazing for the price. It has the nutube on the preamp stage and a class d poweramp if I'm not mistaken. It provides the best direct-in guitar sound I have ever had in my life and it works great with pedals. I love driving it with my fuzz pedal. Really excited to buy a cabinet for it soon.
Desdinova Eternal Light - I recommend getting 2 of the 8” cabs. You’ll get the full 50 watts as well as a much fuller sound! That’s what I did & I LOVE it!
@@jamesskaggs7691 Yeah man, that's exactly what I'm planning on doing in the next 6 months. I have heard nothing but great things about those 8" cabs. Glad to get another recommendation!
@Trunk McEight this is a copy/paste from Vox site 'Equipped with a Nutube in both the pre-amp and power amp, the next-generation tube amp has arrived!'
I never liked what vox did. They took their whole operation to China even their Flagship amps. They were charging $4,000 for their hand-wired ac30 made in China. For me that's ridiculous. I think China makes all amps for the same price. Probably a couple hundred dollars. I think I read they may be making the ac30 back in England once again. I guess I'm not the only one that thought it was ridiculous. How can you move to China and still charge the same price as you were making them in England. They didn't pass the savings on to the consumer. They kept it for themselves. That's my only complaint. You move to China's so it's cheaper to get your product made but who benefits.
Shane... I really wish reviewers of gear would give equal time to single coil and humbuckers... as a P90 and single coil player this review does little for me. Same comment for high gain, low gain, and clean tones. I hope you will think about this in future reviews. Cheers.
Vox is an amp that hasn’t been on my list of must have amps. This one does sound amazing and the technology used to create the tube experience is damn good, but it’s just not enough to change my mind. My favorite feature of this amp is the built in attenuator!!!! Nothing better than being able to play with full tone without blasting the world with volume!!! Somehow I feel like there should make a tube amp with a built in attenuator!!! The perfect amp!!😂😂😂 Cheers!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
"DEEP DIVE" but you left out the WET ONLY extension cab output? You need to try this! This is the world's simplest wet/dry rig!!! It takes the whole sound to a new level not easily duplicated on stage without intricate cabling/switching.
Nice review. Yes it had some Vox tones in there. Clearly very versatile. Unfortunately that is also my issue with this amp. Oddly the more I watched the demo of all it’s different channel switching, the less I was liking it. Not because it sounded bad. Because it didn’t. It sounded good. But once I went past the tones I wanted I wasn’t interested in the rest. Considering all the features it was actually missing the one feature I would want in a Vox amp, the Tremolo. In the UK this amp is £800. And I really didn’t see that value in it. Shame in a way.
can you change the 4 channels with foot switches? also would have been nice to go over all thew ins/out on the back... also can you turn that blue light logo off? £600 same as a boss katana artist.
Great video as always, Shane! If I'm honest, I really, really disliked the sound of this amp. Something subtle in the attack (mostly in the clean channel and low-gain settings) bothered me. Am I the only person who thought this?
I didn't feel so enthusiastic since the Pathfinder. No 150 Watts: who cares ? I regularily play with an 18W or 22 W amps. To me, this VOX sounds just right and covers all bases from VOX to Marshally sounds, passing through Fendery cleans. Plus it's compact, nice with those LED shining lights... and it's cheap ! Last but not least: we'll see how this thing does over the years, but you won't have the maintenance problems related to valve amps. VOX just did it again ! \m/
I was all excited when I saw this since I have 2 MV50 Clean heads w/2 8” cabs, but when I looked it up on Sweetwater & saw the price, I almost choked! $999.99?!!!! WOW! Also, when I looked at it, there were other features you could’ve mentioned, like the effects loop or the fact that some things are foot switchable!
Okay, so here in the States at Sweetwater this beast costs the same as the Fender Tone Master Twin (Your NEW benchmark standard). But, it's 10 pounds heavier, lacks one of the 12 inch speakers, and at a gig with the amp behind you...you're going to be reading the controls upside down. If Sky wasn't letting you borrow one for free and you had to buy it and play it at a gig...would you want this or a Tone Master Twin behind you?
Did not like very many of these tones. Then again, was never a fan of the Vox sound so it's likely just me. They have them on sale for 1/2 price but this video convinced me to save my money.
Nope!...Is the whole music industry gone corrupt?..think I'll invest in Cobalt stock and give these amp companies a real reason why there amp prices are high!
I have a vox amp plug metal 2 and there bass guitar version. There headphone amps in a sense. Vox can and does more then there Famous Ac series . Just saying lol
I give these amps get a resounding "Meh". To me they're just over built and over priced practice amps. They always sound over compressed and over processed for what they're trying to be. If I was still playing out I'd be more inclined to get one because of the weight issue and let's be honest here...a club full of drunk people aren't going to analyze your tone...or care. In these cases "close enough" is more than enough. But for my own enjoyment or recording, I wouldn't touch one of these or the Fenders.

On my local used market I can get a full ac30 for 700 bucks or less. A grand for this new? Idk. Sounds good though.
Not sure about the light up blue logo ... but it beats the hell out of cheesy golden plastic.
It's a $1000 on Sweetwater. Seems overpriced for a solid state amp.
Companies have to know consumers will always say to themselves, "For the same money I could have 'x' tube amp."
It's a Nutube amp in the preamp and power amp section. :-)
I'm pretty sure it's all Nutube and not solid state. for both the pre and power sections
Cheers.
Exactly! Too many humbuckers around in reviews.
Jamal Kareem I have a Vox AC4 Whitham exactly that. Great little amp. But I love my blues junior and that is what I play 90% of the time
Nick Bouvy Nice!!!! Perhaps one day I will get a Vox to see what I can get out of it.🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
I'm still part of the katana kult.
"DEEP DIVE" but you left out the WET ONLY extension cab output? You need to try this! This is the world's simplest wet/dry rig!!! It takes the whole sound to a new level not easily duplicated on stage without intricate cabling/switching.
Blackstar sliverline please! =D
Love your playing!
Loud enough for gig?
You can change channel one and two with foootswitch, also reverb on/off, bypass the fxloop and engage master volume 2 if you want to boost the amp
And you can turn that blue light off
Great video as always, Shane!
If I'm honest, I really, really disliked the sound of this amp. Something subtle in the attack (mostly in the clean channel and low-gain settings) bothered me. Am I the only person who thought this?
I also think so. it doesn't have the attack of a tube amp
@@gustafrenstrom8549 Maybe it's too crisp and linear and not saggy baggy and broken like I like a tube amp to sound.
Ice pick!
@@WarrenPostma that might be why. i guess it's because we are so used to tube amps.
No, it has the digital “cocked wah” disease affecting so many floor modelers and digital amps.
Very cool looking amp too modern and classic looks put together nicely
I can tell from hear his sounds very harsh at times ..I believe it's now discontinued
beautiful sounds
Very beautiful music)) thanks so much
Good playing and review, the amp sounds good, it it using the Nutube technology?
He said so.
Sweet tone at 05:38 !
Do you have Joe Barden pickups in that tele to your left ??? ...wondering what you thought about those !!!
Or are they GFS pickups ?? those are great as well !!! their lil thumpers
Sounds ace, it's a Vox, nothing else left to say..
Damn! I didn't think I needed another amp! I was wrong!!!
Try a hot cake with the vox!! It's awesome made in New Zealand.
OK, the more I listen, the more I like it. I judged to quickly by price. My bad
James Skaggs the Fender Tone Master Amos are $900-$1000 and digitally model the original they are copying
I remember my previous nutube amp having volume and attenuation issues. This one looks better...
I told you, the cult of the marshall sdl 40 is everywhere too :)
Doesn't sound too bad at all!
Sounds great but priced too high you can get a nice tube amp for that money.
I don’t like the cheesy “British sound evolved” blurb, but otherwise, it seems pretty nice. But at over $300.00 more than an AC-15?!?!?! Nope.
This has just become super relevant
Epic. Blown away
Starts rapping, "I wish amps were a little bit taller"...
What's this Vox shtick with the flipped upside-down control panel? Isn't that rather annoying?
This is one of the better sounding digital amps I've heard.
This also has the Nutubes loaded in the preamp and power amp section. I must have edited that out at the start :-(
@@intheblues Oh cool! I don't remember you mentioning that, but it's also really early in the morning here lol
I can't stand Vox's aesthetics. I'd say it is a British thing except I love Marshall's aesthetics
NuTubes sound great.
Nope!...Is the whole music industry gone corrupt?..think I'll invest in Cobalt stock and give these amp companies a real reason why there amp prices are high!
Dosnt sound like a valve amp to me. Too fizzy, not organic like good valve amp.
I have a vox amp plug metal 2 and there bass guitar version. There headphone amps in a sense. Vox can and does more then there Famous Ac series . Just saying lol
This or a katana artist? 😏
This is also the question I have. Which is the better amp? Thanks for another great video!
Uau...show man...🇧🇷
100 peek watts I think
I read it was 120 peak but not positive
Exactly "RMS" is the true way to tell wattage Peak X 0.707 = rms
Get a Boss Katana.
For the money, Katana folks
$999.00 U.S.
Jeeeeebus.
Weighs 50lbs
Nah didn't like it at all
Sounds significantly shittier than a Boss Katana. Boss Katanas sound way more authentic for less than half the price.
