As tourists whoever visit Goa, they end up enjoying the serene beaches and the night life of the beautiful coastal state, and some people who are interested in history visit the Portugal era churches. But not many know about the rich and abundant culture of Goa and it's Hindu temples, one of the famous being the Mangeshi Shiv temple in Priol, Ponda. But here we will know about one of the most famous temples of Goa, The Mahalasa Narayani Devi temple, located in the Mardol, one of the oldest villages of Goa.
In the tranquil landscapes of Goa, amidst the gentle rustle of palm trees and the soothing melody of the sea, lies a temple that stands as a testament to divine grace and celestial splendor. This sacred abode is none other than the shrine of Shri Mahalasa Narayani Devi, the revered deity worshipped as the Kuladevi by various castes and communities in the region. Let us delve deeper into the intricate tapestry of mythology, folklore, and devotion that enshrouds the divine persona of Shri Mahalasa Narayani Devi.
The genesis of Shri Mahalasa Narayani's legend can be traced back to the epic tale of the Samudra Manthan, or the Churning of the Ocean, as elucidated in the Bhagwat Purana. Amidst the cosmic battle between the Devas and the Asuras for the elixir of immortality, emerged the enchanting Mohini avatar of Lord Vishnu. Mohini's bewitching allure led to the downfall of the Asuras, ensuring that the nectar of immortality fell into the hands of the Devas.
Mahalasa, synonymous with Mohini, embodies the captivating form of Lord Vishnu's enchantress avatar. The transition from Mohini to Mahalasa encompasses various narratives, each resonating with divine unions and cosmic destinies. One popular legend recounts how Mohini pledged to marry Martand Bhairav (Khandoba), thus assuming the divine identity of Mahalasa. Another tale intertwines Mahalasa with Parvati, who appeared as mesmerizing as Mohini to Lord Shiva. Despite the diverse narratives, Mahalasa remains firmly rooted as the embodiment of Vishnu's Mohini avatar.
Because the original temple and the adjoining land belonged to Shri Santeri Devi and Shri Laxminarayan, the Pooja rituals always start with these two god and goddess, followed by Shri Mahalasa Narayani Devi's Pooja.
The original temple of Shri Santeri Devi and Shri Laxminarayan had been renovated five years back. The roof and doors were made of thick rich teak wood, which increases the attractiveness of these structures tremendously. You can see nicely done intricate work by the artisans.
The effigy of Shri Mahalasa Narayani, adorned with celestial insignias, stands as a testament to her divine attributes. With four hands wielding symbols of power and transcendence, she commands reverence and adoration. The portrayal of Mahalasa standing atop demons, with a severed head in hand, symbolizes the triumph of divine righteousness over malevolent forces.
The veneration of Mahalasa transcends geographical boundaries, with her temples dotting the landscapes of Karnataka, Kerala, and Gujarat. The dissemination of her worship underscores the enduring legacy of devotion and spiritual fervor across diverse communities. As custodians of an ancient heritage, the devotees of Mahalasa Narayani uphold traditions that date back to antiquity, fostering a legacy of unwavering faith and transcendental enlightenment.
In the heartlands of Goa, amidst verdant landscapes and tranquil shores, Shri Mahalasa Narayani Devi reigns as the epitome of divine grace and celestial splendor. Her saga, steeped in mythological lore and spiritual devotion, continues to inspire generations, fostering a legacy of unwavering faith and transcendental enlightenment. May the divine presence of Shri Mahalasa Narayani illuminate our lives with blessings and divine guidance.
