The buttons do genuinely work I use them all the time. I have had almost a year and they have never fallen off for me the trick is to get them from Amazon there are variety packs and come as super cheap. ( the kind I bought are called jean button replacement no sew needed , 8 pcs perfect fit instant button to extend or reduce)

I got the buttons off Amazon and love them. They work amazingly and I literally wash my jeans with them in and they never move. I think it may depend on the manufacturer. I have a pair that’s had the same additional button on for maybe 4 months now
it can also be because the back wasn't pushed onto the button enough, I have these same ones and they never come off, but if I don't push the back on enough they can fall off!
