  • Now that Windows Virtual Desktop is ARM-based, all WVD resources can be deployed and managed using the Azure portal. In this What the Pros Know video, Mike demonstrates step-by-step how you can deploy a simple WVD environment in less than 30 minutes, without a single PowerShell cmdlet. This will allow you to take WVD for a test drive and see what all the excitement is about!

    How can an user access the virtual machine if there is not a local domain and not a site-to-site VPN to Azure? In that case, do we need a public IP? Thanks.

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      The session hosts must have access to a domain controller for authentication. That could be a site-to-site VPN or ExpressRoute for hybrid environments, or running a domain controller in Azure.
      No need for public IPs for the session hosts!

    Thank you! I have a question - If I choose 10 as the max session limit and choose Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session Version 2004 + Microsoft 365; 1. does it mean I can have 10 users access that virtual PC with their own IDs and 2) If so when they look at their C:\ drive - will it be same for all - Or do each get a private C:\? 3) What do they share in this scenario - asking for security/privacy reasons. Thanks!

    Hi Mike, just quick question. Do you still need domain controller to deploy it or Azure AD can be used with this new update? thanks.

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 4 года назад +4

      You will still need domain services synced with Azure AD. It can be either Windows Server Active Directory Domain Services (hybrid environment) or Azure AD domain services (hybrid or cloud-only environment). The session hosts must be joined to a domain.

    Hi, Mike, How can we publish other applications except for office on WVD?

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      You can publish any application that is installed on the session host VMs. The easiest way to do this is to create a custom image with your software installed, and then use that image as the base to create your session host VMs. Azure Image Builder is perfect for this. The applications will show up in the drop down list when creating your RemoteApp group.

    Thanks Mike! Great and concise video. Now is there a way to install additional software into that image or must I use a custom vm with all the software preinstalled and then deploy it in AWVD? thanks 🙏

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад +1

      You can remote into the session hosts as administrator and install additional applications. I have done this by temporarily allowing RDP into the session hosts. This works in test environments and small environments, but if you have many session hosts, you are better off creating a custom image.

  • @someguyhipp

    What permissions are needed to join the machine to the domain? I have seen "cloud device administrator", in some online doco, but it appears we do not have that role. "Device Update Administrator" could be an option. Is there a more restricted role that I can use? Thanks

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      To join a machine to an on-premises domain, the user account will need to be delegated the permission in Active Directory. None of the Azure roles can grant this permission. Typically this permission is delegated to a standard user over a particular OU in Active Directory. For example, I have an OU in Active Directory called "SessionHosts". I created a user account named "Domain Join" (in Active Directory, not Azure). Then you launch the delegation wizard by right-clicking on the SessionHosts OU, selecting the Domain Join user account, and choosing the permission to join computers to the domain. The permission will be granted for that specific OU. If you want, you can do this at the domain level as well, it will inherit to all OUs.

      The session hosts must be joined to an Active Directory Domain. It can be an on-premises domain that is synchronized with Azure, or you can set up a domain in Azure. Here is a link to do the later...docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/deploy/virtual-dc/adds-on-azure-vm.
