One thing I wanna add is something that I’m honestly shocked you guys forgot to talk about: fear and disruption. A good spy can cause sooo much disruption in an enemy team, they will stop focusing on the midfight, and instead focus solely on trying to kill the spy. Players who were just plowing through the enemies are now constantly checking their backs, always fearful that the spy is somewhere. Plus, that fear causes team disruption. Many players will, in a fit of rage or annoyance, will switch to Pyro- the spy’s biggest counter in the game. But, having multiple pyros on a team just hunting for one spy makes it so there are less soldiers, demos, heavies and medics trying to take objectives. Plus, pyros are weaker against sentry guns and long range classes, which are EVERYWHERE on certain maps. A spy does not carry a team to victory by killing everyone and capturing objectives solo. No, a spy carries a team by making the other team focus so much on him, that they forget what their actual objective is- a very ninja thing to do.
They also forgot to mention about sabotage, one of the main tasks of a ninja. The spy is the only class that can shut down the Engineer's buildings. He can sap the defenses, healing spots and transportation of an enemy team, thus giving the advantage to his team.
Max Power Not only that. Spies will also always pick up health and ammo boxes, regardless of if they need them. Nabbing a health kit might not seem like much, but when the medic loses a 98% Ubercharge because it wasn’t there, it makes all the difference.
@@pretzelbomb6105 Well, to be fair, they do need to have less than full health, ammo and cloak to pick them up, but yeah, still sabotaje. Or pretending to be a teammate so medics waste their uber on you

But for ammo he needs to waste some shots and Ammunition

Another ninja thing about Spy might be, ironically, the fact that he never shuts up. Ninja techniques aren't just about stealth, but distraction and deception. In a world where your enemies come back to life after you kill them, taunting someone over and over would not only make the in-universe character he's killing angry, but also that character's player. A sufficiently enraged player becomes predictable, easily taken out by the Spy's allies, to the point of effectively removing them as a contributor to the game. And if they ragequit, they're *literally* removed from the game.
hawkeye is a TOTAL ninja in the avengers movies
he has a tendency towards ambushes, silent observation, bows duh, deception/distractions, stealth, explosives (especially for distractions), utilizing high ground, multi-use gadgets and weaponry, discreet clothing (for a marvel character) and small concealable weapons like knives batons and aperently collapsable arrows (age of ultron)
whenever he gets to do things his way in the movies:
he guards the tesseract from the shadowy rafters
sabotauges the helecarrier utilizing misdirection, trickery, sneakery, and explosives
spys on thor unseen from a crane
distracts vision and then sets a trap to slow him down
misdirects ironman twice in the climactic civil war battle to open him up to other's attacks ("made you look" and ant man arrow)
ambushing quicksilver by breaking the glass floor below him
tricking loki with an explosive arrow in avengers
silently steals a mcguffin in germany, unknown to the avengers, while loki causes a distaction (avengers)

@Gaijin Goombah Media , You forgot to mention about Dead Ringer where you automatically turns invisible and spawns a fake dead body when you get damage while using it. That's almost similar to a jutsu of using a fake body made out of straws to distract or confuse the enemy. Great video nevertheless.

Maybe, but Gaijin must not have had time to put it in. Although I would imagine putting a segment with the Dead Ringer would make the video 15~20 minutes long. It was a cheap game breaker in its heyday with how well it kept the Spy safe. Now it's a specialized getaway item when you are caught (the way it was intended).

funny thing is about that sun tzu quote is you should do pretty much the exact opposite of what it implies for spy players. a low health soldier will be more attentive on their return to get health, and more importantly, will be looking backwards. trying to sneak past him or get a backstab will only result in you being spychecked and possibly killed. either steer clear of low health enemies or if you know the map well, flank to the health kit they're going to, approach from the side, and shoot them instead.

Something else that’s probably just a neat conjecture more than actual evidence, but after the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s isolation party France spent the next 40 years consuming Japanese art and culture. Ever hear about Le Risastance? When France submitted to Nazi Occupation with little persuasion, there were many citizens who did not. Many of their strategies and tactics have direct parallels to ninja tactics. Paris in particular has a hidden underbelly, the Catacombs, that allowed resistance fighters to seem to vanish into thin air. French ninja suddenly don't seem to far fetched. And since TF2 is set in the height of the cold war, you KNOW where spy got his skills from.

My God. Ever since I saw both this video and Lazy's video, I actually improved on playing spy in terms of staying hidden. Depending on how much space is in the map, as well as the lack of Pyros, I am actually able to slip past people by staying invisible in the middle of the group.
And regarding your video on how to play Genji pretty well, not only did I know the map enough, but I also know hiding spots that no one in the game suspects, as well as routes I can take to make a getaway.
The only struggle I have is landing my back stabs. I'm not very good at aiming.

Also the Dead Ringer is similar to the decoy/substitution tactic ninjas used by making fake bodies to distract enemies.
The box trot strategy is great for the Spy’s version of Snakes box disguise which makes me think of the hiding tapestry trick as well.
It can take a while for new players to develop a ‘spy sense’ to check for players so the part about taking advantage of those less skilled makes perfect sense!
Best part was referencing LazyPurples video, he’s one of the most seasoned veterans and I’m glad to see him being a source of knowledge in TF2!

Not to mention that the Spy NEVER removes his mask and his true identity is a complete mystery, both to his teammates and even to us, the players! Subsequent TF2 comics and tie-in videos have revealed the real names of several of the characters (ex. the Demoman's real name is Tavish DeGroot), but not the Spy's.
Yes, but maybe the fact that he never removes his mask works against him. In a TF2 comic, Spy is working in a shopping mall still wearing his mask. That makes him stand out instead of making him less noticeable

Absolutely. Hair dye, colored contact lens, make-up, a wig, sunglasses, a hat (fitting for TF2 isn't it?), anything that gives him a "natural" appearance while still disguising his real. If you knew, for example, that he's pale, blond with blue eyes, you wouldn't look for a tanned, brunette guy with dark eyes, right?

Spies Are Basically More Modern Ninja's

Okay, you missed some key stuff about the Spy.
First of all, even his default appearance is pretty ninja when it comes to use and function. Spy's outfit is basically something you would expect to see in your daily life, thus making it easier to hide into crowds. Also, it's not pitch black, but light blue or light red. Light blue is pretty obvious, but light red probably would work with all the explosions and fired shots happening everywhere. It's a common outfit with a clever choice of color.
Also there's the fact he's masking all(or at least most) of his facial traits, and you can only see his eyes and mouth.
Next things can be seen in his personality. Although he doesn't use that to his advantage, Spy has often been portrayed as a very seductive character. It is pretty reminiscent of the Kunoichi, who would use social skills to infiltrate.
One of the alternate weapons you forgot to mention is the Dead Ringer, which allows its user to escape while invisible while a fake body is left behind.
This is very reminiscent of the Intonjutsu, the "art of disappearing", as he's living an obvious trace he should be dead, while actually leaving silently and out of sight. He even lets out a death cry upon activation, as a make believe he has been severely hurt.
Also, just the very fact he is a hidden spy looking for information is essentially something a ninja would do.
There's this that comes from the comics, too:
Spy has been revealed in the comics to have fake molars made to open and reveal stuff. One of these molars include a cyanide filled one, that he would crack to quickly die in case there is absolutely no escape, protecting all the valuable information he knows from getting revealed through torture.
NOTE: Technically you could say he loves explosions, as he uses the fact his teammates use explosive weapons to get more distraction in, even though he doesn't use them himself.
Even though this was his last, his memory will always live on. Rest in peace Gaujin Goomba.

One more item you forgot about was the Spy's 'Dead Ringer' watch.
With it activated, any hit causes him to cloak, and a fake Spy to be dropped, in the hope that the enemy believes that they have dealt with him. A clear use of the Kawarimi no Jutsu (Body Replacement Technique).

Personally one of my favorite ninjas is the Disney version of Tarzan. Hear me out, if you re-watch the old movie you'll see that he is actually really skilled with keeping to the shadows and moving around without notice. Add that to his ability to us his environment to his advantage, ability to copy sounds, behaviors of other animal, and so on.

Now that I think about it: On a fundamental level, Spies and Ninjas are really similar. They are both people that are usually hired, whos primary purpose is information gathering, tough they are still capable of assassination, use a variety of tools to achieve their goal and try to always stay hidden, be it literally (staying hidden in the shadows) or practically (Hiding in direct eyesight through, as an example, disguise). This can also be seen in movies/popculture, in which they gained popularity around the same time and also were often portrait as invincible warriors.
I was about to make a comment about the shinobi and interstellar hitchhiking, but while looking back at the video I realize that the book you captured while showing the Kanji for 忍びの六武 already makes the Hitchhiker's Guide joke!

(I did notice one error and that was you said a spy disguised as medic needs to be healing people when spy can't heal people even if he is disguised as medic. That being said, a medic with his medigun in hands instead of his syringe gun is less likely to get spychecked so you aren't entirely wrong.)

Another point in Spy's favor is the fact we never see his full face. Just a little bit of his mouth, no defining hairstyle, only a bit of his eyes. In the comics we get the tiniest peek under the mask when he and Scout are in jail, and he lifts up only the bottom of his mask to shave.
