Considered by whom? When you already have money it doesn't make you the best. You guys live under a brick and Joe doesn't know anything about betting. These guys throw a ton of money at something. To say he doesn't even look at lines, man if you know anything or have been doing this for 10 years plus. THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WITH OVER A 50% win rate.... Like MILLIONS. You know what they don't do? Come on here talking about it because there living good lol.

Sports doesn't even need to be rigged by the players or teams all they need is a corrupt referee. Look at that basketball ref who was rigging games and making bogus calls to sway the games. He said himself that over 80% of all the games he reffed were rigged and the outcomes were extremely accurate.

I said "grandad if I was to bet I'd do it like this: *and I explained my gut idea*" he said " that's exactly what I did". Never talked about it again. Grandad died 10 years ago. I bet horses (grew up by a racetrack) and when I was a kid I noticed that all of the professional handicappers that I met were math teachers or retired math teachers. So to me, that was really cool because it went against the stereotypes of gamblers being drunks and losers. What I wound up finding is that playing the horses successfully is 80% math, 15 percent horse knowledge and 5% random. There's a lot of risk avoidance too. So I enjoyed this guest but I am not really interested in playing other sports.

I went to Whiskey Pete’s as I was just betting & going home to So Cal. I was running short on time to get my bets in so I made it & bet on the individual games about $500 a game . Then I sat down & put together a couple of parleys & went back to the betting desk put my bets in & noticed a line was different & of course asked about it . He said it had changed because of my previous bet . I thought wow I’m a big time better because I changed a line. Luckily it turned out the loss of the extra point didn’t matter & I won anyway.

This was great advice. Like the stock market, you have to do your research to be successful. Betting is not as complicated as the stock market.
Years ago, I talked to someone who helped with the handicap in a Vegas casino. Pay attention to the injury report, looking for trends, i.e. large markets sway the spread, travel, weather, grass/turf. Start out with small bets to experiment. Bet larger on the guarantees. A few dollars in a few years will build up a bank roll. Slowly, you can figure it out too.

    • @ronswanson1410

I just track pricing inefficiencies based on how the books perform at every subset of odds for various moneyline and prop bets and do deeper analysis into various pricing trends from open to close. I don't even know the names or abilities of the people I place my bets on half the time. Did this for a year on paper before using real money. It's amazing how easy it is to win at sports betting.

Betting is infinitely more complicated than the stock market, that is unbelievably inaccurate. A 5% return in sports betting is considered elite level. You can earn more than that by holding a blue chip stock or index, or just a freaking HYSA. You're talking out of your ass if you're suggesting to someone that it's not hard to win 54% long term. The statistics behind how many people are actually capable of pulling that off versus the people sitting in RUclips comments talking about how easy it is raises the BS alarm as loud as a foghorn. The best sports bettors in the world either spend 16+ hours a day grinding research or spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the world's best quants to automate it. I guarantee you cannot show returns of more than 5% and a win rate of above 54% long term in sports betting and you are just whispering sweet nothings. In fact I'll bet $100 on it.

He wouldn’t bet parlays, professional bettors don’t do that. We call those lottery tickets. Because any edge you have gained with your research is instantly lost the second you parlay and require all things to be right to profit. We bet the game straight up. 10k to net a profit of 9k if you win. Most of us average a win % of between 52-55. So sports betting at the professional level is not a get rich quick scheme. It’s small gains over time. It’s actually a grind and can be tedious and stressful. Not really that glamorous of a career choice. But I agree with Billy. I still trust my handicapping skills vs the betting market vastly more than the stock market. Best year I ever had betting sports I hit 14%ROI best year I ever had in my stock investments was 7%ROI and I had to keep my money tied up for a year. Sports betting, money goes in - win - money comes in. No tying up funds for indefinite periods. It’s more fluid.

Billy is a wild dude. His book is really interesting and has a lot of good information for sports bettors. But one of the things that really stuck out to me…he employees an entire team of MIT and Ivy school grads to crunch numbers and create their own power rankings to determine a games line to compare to the books, and on a good week they might win 60-65% of their bets. That is really tough for the “average” bettor to accomplish on their own no matter how much time or knowledge you may have.

He grinded that team from the ground up with years and YEARS of hard work and failure. The core concepts behind his model which he outlines in his book haven't changed much since 50 years ago, he's just honed and refined them to an elite level. You have to be above average to work that hard anyways in the first place. Most people are not willing to invest that much time in something. There are still pen and paper handicappers today that grind an edge by working crazy hours. Billy Walters is just an example of a brilliant and hard working person who scaled his operation to the ultimate degree
