I love heavy, story driven games, but there needs to be some "game" and that's where Hellblade 2 falls down. If you like the first you'll love this, but for the rest of us I would tread with caution. Love Reggie xxx
Here's how I describe it. If 75% of God of war ragnarok was that yak riding section and you removed all other weapons and abilities so you just had the basic axe light/heavy attacks....you'd have hb2....and it'd be a terrible game.
I disagree. I loved the first hellblade but this one kinda sucked for me . The story was boring and disjointed and the combat was horrible compared to the first one . No one really liked the combat in the first one because they claimed it was to simple. Well they doubled down on hellblade 2 and made it mostly a cinamatic cut scene.
@Luis-rp2lm indeed, The Quarry was one of the earliest videos I did on this channel. I think I gave it a 6/10. It wasn’t quite up to par as Until Dawn. Another game that I think plays similar to this is a Plagues Tale, and I gave that an 8/10 from memory (videos are further back in my catalogue?).
Haha, a great way of putting it. Similar to the first I guess but I just wish they took more risks to give us a game here. But based on the reviews so far, it seems a highly divisive game.
@homeblue7667 we can all use stats to prove a point… Of 88 trade critics, it’s currently on an average score of 81%. Divisive because a lot of the trade press gave it a 10 or 9 whilst others gave it that 6 or 7 which explains the average of where it’s at (Eurogamer/Gamesradar/Gamespot/PC Gamer all gave wildly different scores). And over 337 user scores on metacritic gave an average score of 72%. The fact your Google reviews show 88% merely proves the point how divisive this is based on the source.
The combat in the first game was really bad imo. It was fun until you got the hang of how simple it was. Somehow the combat in the sequel is even worse. And after listening to an interview with Dom Mathews telling that people on Ninja Theory have decades of experience with action games and combat, it's nowhere to be seen lol. At least it's a chill experience so far
Anything with lesser gameplay than the likes of The Order 1886, Ryse Son of Rome or Callisto Protocol definitely seems more like a one and done type of game.. seems like a chill game as more of a *experience" than anything else but cant justify that price for just 6 hrs..
This feels like an oscar movie, and i dont mean that in a good way. Its the kind of game they cynically make to win awards to get recognition instead of simply making a game people want to play.
This isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Me, personally, I love the simplistic and easy to get into gameplay. It meshes well with the story driven, cinematic focus of the game. I’m loving this game so far. 10/10

Exactly why it’s such a divisive game, which I think the trade press shows… rare you see perfect 10’s and then see 6/10! I totally get why people love it too and that’s all that matters. Hope you’re having fun!
theres now a large group of people that like highly cinematic games with little to almost no gameplay mechanics , its basically film talking over the gaming space , because film isnt interactive or personal, and challenging games are too much hassle for some
Hellblade 2 is a Seamless Cinematic Experience! A Masterpiece Technical Spectacle... that makes most lauded playstation games seem like public access drivel!
Was a fan of the first game. HB2 is a beautiful game but the game play did put me to sleep in some areas that I had to stop playing and go back to it. Mind you it’s a ltttle longer than the first game. Took me 7 hours to complete and the first game took me 6 hrs.
As an experience it is next fucking level and the fight sequences are the most cinematic ever seen. Just don’t expect Elden ring and enjoy the experience NT have created. Or don’t! The wonder of choice :)
I liked the first game, but this doesn't sound very great. I guess I'll wait for a deep discount to pick this up. I wish they would have pushed their own envelope and come up with new things to do.
Absolute garbage not a game no excuse I get it. The graphics are good but what’s the point it’s not a game it’s a movie but I see your point is not for everyone.
There are hundreds of games like that and only now that's seem to be an issue (for some, of course). There is gameplay enough IMO, this is not an open-world game.
Honestly, If you loved the first I think you’ll be safe and you’ll look back at this video and think I was talking nonsense. It’s a very divisive game, so definitely read the reviews from Eurogamer and Gamesradar that give this perfect scores. For me, it just isn’t a game. It’s a movie type experience (and impressive one too) but if you enjoy that type of game then go for it, I think you’ll be more than satisfied with it.
@cockneygamer No, you are right lol It's 9:36 pm here on the east coast "United States" I started a new game at 8:30 pm and I have already stopped for the night lol The combat system is not good.. It is so repetitive, and I just started. When I was fighting the slave master, I just kept asking myself when is this going to end. Walking takes forever! Your review already is spot on, and I haven't even completed it.
In which case my comment above was absolutely nonsense! There is a few segments later on in the game where wave after wave of enemy comes at you… it’s exhausting! 😂 Appreciate you reporting back!
A review is really to help people decide if the $50 is worth it for a 6 hour game. For many it will be. For others they may wish to get a pov as to why they should save the cash. My opinion stands for nothing over anyone else, and whilst I’ve liked other games like Starfield and Homeworld 3, others have hated it.
