The soldering element in this video I've found extremely helpful and will put into practise tomorrow. I've done a few poor jobs that have made it work but this video has been key for me. Thank you for the demo! One reason I love this channel. Keep up the good work. Thanks Chris
gf37419 Cheers Chris! I like to do some ‘how to’ videos as well as layout updates. It’s better than endless self promotion and exhibition videos that are all over RUclips. Sharing my modelling and my techniques is what I enjoy. Dave
@@DeanPark it's worked a treat with my 47791. Double iphone speaker and legoman chip in. Sounds great . . . If you like 47s . . . Biased 37 man myself, but the sound is brilliant. Will have to watch the depot build in closer detail once I get my Buxton shed. Cheers Dave and Merry Xmas.
What an improvement Dave, makes a big difference from the basic speaker that is supplied with these decoders. I put an uprated speaker in one of my 37s fuel tanks a while ago and was really impressed with it.
Flux pen now ordered and I purchased eight sound units, direct from Rail Exclusive. Much cheaper than Peter's Spares. Thanks for your help and keep uploading, informative videos.
Hi Dave, With new people starting in the hobby all the time it’s really very helpful to see how to solder, use shrink wrap and add a different speaker. It makes a big difference. Thanks. I’m sure Hunt Couplings would help on your HST 125 too. Regards, Jim
Jim Ross hi thanks. With regard to soldering; in this video I put a little solder on the tip of the soldering iron. I only ever do this when im doing a tiny wee job, like wiring very thin and delicate connections. If you are soldering normal stuff like wires to track you shouldn’t put solder on the iron for too long , but instead place the solder at the joint, bring in the iron to quickly melt the solder. If it’s got flux on it then it’ll flow into the joint and attach.
The sound is so much better now Dave. I will sure try that out when I get my power cars fitted. Been on my list a while now to buy the TTS chips for them. Also like your flux pen I never saw one of those before.
Thanks for that Dave, I’ve just finished installing my Valenta TTS decoders into my original 253 001. I was wondering about changing the speakers, so your video is very timely, did you read my mind ? 🤣 I’ll be ordering some speakers from Peter’s Spares right away !
I rated the TTS Valenta chips with their existing speakers but the Rex speakers really make a difference. You can actually hear the diesel rather than just the turbocharger. Thanks for doing the video, I'll be doing the same upgrade myself on this basis. PS, glad you pointed out the Rex speaker can fit the old speaker cavity in the power car! Excellent and informative video.
Hi Dave, great sound with the upgrade. May try them with the MTU chips in my FGW set. Hope they will fit the driven power car as it's the type with the fan and space is apparently tight. Regards and maybe see you at Warley as I'm hoping that there will be a U.tubers gathering again. Bobby 'T'.
Robert Temple hi, there should be space... you might want to cut out the ribs /screw brackets inside the original speaker enclosure so that the new rail exclusives one sits lower. I did that in this to get it sitting even lower... it’s a 5 min job to the black plastic enclosure with a craft knife. I plan to be at warley but prefer to enjoy the show and wander around. the meet ups are good for some, but I don’t plan on it as I’m with friends and it would be rude to abandon them. If you see me, be sure to say hi... I like meeting others as I walk around while enjoying the show :-)
Been using these speakers since they were released to convert not just TTS sound locos but premium sound locos too, and I have to say they are superb all round. You should try the class 47 Zimo sound decoder Rail Exclusive sell, it's a Paul Chetter sound file and it sounds awesome. I've bought a couple now, 1 for a Bachmann 47 and the other for a ViTrains 47 and at £99 which includes a stay alive too, it's a bargain for a premium sound decoder. I'll be buying more for my other 47's... Mark.
That's a much better sounds Dave, and it captures the Valenta 'Scream' very well, all that was missing was the heavy Clagg associated with those engines....Also enjoyed the Soldering session as well....Bob

Hi dave Brill video as always and the speaker replacement is a massive better difference. But is it me or is the valenta scream from the turbo to me dosnt sound right or kicks in far to early???. Peter from birmingham
southway1943 hi. Yeah the turbo can be out of sync.. this is a TTS decoder and isn’t as good as a full blow loksound decoder. Still they’re bot too bad for the money :-) Cheers.
Nice upgrade, that made a huge difference in the sound. I also like the no clean flux pen. Where did you get that? Could you provide a link? Thanks for sharing. Ken
Hi Ken, thanks for getting in touch to give your views on the sound upgrade. The flux pen....just google it. I got this last one at an exhibition. However Rapid Electronics have them too. Cheers. Dave
hi nice video my question is do you give your power cars the same address or are they individual addressed and run as a consist and which is best kind regards ralph
DaveClass47 they ran one the opposite way through rosyth and the other one isn’t due to leave inverkeithing until 9 so sorry I couldn’t get any footage. :(
Most electronics solder is rosin cored so comes with its own flux! I've build many a PCB without flux. The only time I use flux is low melt solder when making kits.
Quite right. Flux is only needed to assist rosin cored solder when the conductors have oxidised (gone black in the case of copper or a dull dark grey in the case on tinned copper) otherwise soldering is just a case of iron tip one side of the conductor, solder on the other and it will flow perfectly into the stranded wire. Flux should rarely be needed or used.
Great improvement, do you use the Valenta TTS chips? Tried Megabass, Zimo and Rail Exclusive speakers on MTU TTS chips, but they still sound quite distorted (even with lots of black tack). Guess the sound files are overdriven anyway, issues amplified by better speakers. Chips can get quite hot, any issues with them (had to remove Kapton tape for cooling)? Sounds great indeed!
Ive been fitting out all my locos using these big boomer and chunky boom box speakers from rail exclusive!! There spot with tts or legomanbiffo sounds👌👍
Graham Crichton yeah you can get bass, these new ones Are more bassy... the bigger the speaker and enclosure the better... but space in these locos can be limited.
@@DeanPark cheers Dave. I've always wondered because when I see them on videos they always sound tinny but that might just be the limitations of video. Another great video btw. Thank you. I enjoy watching these.
I saw a 125 at Motherwell station whilst waiting for the train to work, it had obviously had a serious engine problem as the rear end of the tractor unit and the 1st 2 coaches were black, covered in oil which was blowing our of the vents as it rolled through the station at about 10 mph, never saw anything like it, late for work and no time credit from the boss.
vince halls yup when you consider that a legomanbiffo for both cars is £300 ish... this is a bargain. Ok it’s not as good as the Legomanbiffo one, but at about £60 all in it’s certainly not £240 worse! If you get my thinking.
There is no flux left on after you tin the wires, it boils off in seconds. Its very bad practice to carry solder to the joint using the iron as the flux in the solder also burns off in seconds. To actually get reliable joints you should always apply the iron to the joint and then apply the solder. Also you should make a mechanical joint on the wires.. one way is to strip a bit longer, fold both at 90 degrees about half way, then put the wires together and twist the one wire bent bit around the other wire and then the other before soldering. ruclips.net/video/qHoyF4yKhjU/видео.html You probably don't need to solder such a joint. The heat shrink will hold it together.
Yep the soldering method shown in this video was all wrong. It worked for him but its just not the way conductors should be soldered. Heat shrinking should not be heated with an iron either, the correct way is to use a heat gun to apply hot air to the shrink, (I use a paint stripper set to low temperature held a few inches away from the shrink and moved backwards and forwards across it) no direct contact heat.
Problem with doing a review of an audio device is it's only as good as the microphone used to record it, the medium used to deliver it and the device used to replicate it. Probably sounds good in real life, but after compressed by YT upload process and then played back through headphones it still sounded tinny and full of white noise to me. Maybe some engine sounds are more suited to DCC than the high pitched whine of the Vallenta's? - But I did like the way you had two speakers, one for each "power" car - that did give a realistic impression as it passed.
Love sound but donwside for me is it is not to scale. You don’t get it pass you and quieten down to only hear the coaches like real life. It’s just there. Once that is emitagated will be amazing. But the sound is now sport on

Scottish Norfolk Southern Fan I went with 7/8 for the volume of the engine. The rest of the volumes are pretty standard settings.
