Cedar....you are so inspiring to listen to! I have learned so much from you and I thank you so much for your insight, struggles, successes. I have cried through some of your words because they touched home! keep up your positive, insightful and inspirational words, it really helps! I love your attitude and am thrilled for your success.
You are just a super down-to-earth woman. That can be your superhero name. Your videos/experience/wisdom have sincerely meant something to someone. me. Thank you, Cedar.
This video was a wake up call for me, I've been trying to get some work done for so long and you just made me realize how noisy my life have been in the last few months. Things that you mentioned I use to do religiously, and I realize now, I forgot what's important for me!
Yes! Being a positive influence on others is absolutely important and everyone should do it as much as they can. But, in my experience, that doesn't help me improve my own work. I see this as 2 separate issues: 1) reaching out to others and being positive and 2) being able to tell when you're being poisoned. I should've said, rather than avoiding negative *people,* (who isn't sometimes?), just, "avoid negative *energy* WHEN you know it will hurt you." You've given me food for thought, thanks!
Thanks. :) I have been an artist for about 20 years--my whole life really, but in a disciplined, purposeful way for about 20 years. So I have tried a lot of things over the years to keep myself on point. Not everything I listed works every time, or will work for everyone, but trying some of these things will probably get most people on their way. Good luck with your new landscapes!
As an artist myself I have to say you really know what you're talking about. I have to really get back to basics and paint some new landscapes sometime. Thanks :)
Thanks for the reply. It's a soapbox issue for me. Self-improvement and personal growth is difficult solo, but many modern-day gurus focus on the self and on the internal rather than on the benefits of reaching out. "When you help dig others out of trouble, you find a place to bury your own"--Chinese proverb. It's equally true when the word trouble is replaced with pessimism, despair, frustration, depression. Of course, some negative individuals are malignant, unchangeable, and best avoided.
Many "wise sages" advocate removal of negativity from one's "space" as an important step toward self-improvement, enhancing a creative environment, etc. (Wayne Dyer, et. al.). One of your bits of advice mentioned something to that effect. Many, not all, pessimists are perfectionists whose "talent/curse" is finding anything out of place. Whiners are often very caring people who are frustrated by what they see as wrong with the world--many celebraties express profound loathing for these people.
Really enjoying your channel. Your insight is invaluable. By the way, my white space occurs at 3:30 in the morning. I spend my time journaling and sometimes, painting. I need to make time for the painting, but for the time being, spending time actually helps me to consider new angles and ideas. I have photos of my art at work and I see all sorts of themes and ideas coming from it! I could revisit nearly every thing I've done and have several themes running concurrently. Thanks so much for sharing your love for art!
Hi, if you haven't yet, please watch my other videos "How to Price your Artwork" as well as "On Commissions" and "Feedback on Your Artwork." I've probably already answered most of your questions in those videos. My general advice is to start around $1/square inch for your standard work and a bit higher (perhaps start at $1.25 or $1.50/square inch) for commissions. But of course use common sense here--calculate your overhead and make sure whatever you charge seems fair both to you & customer. GL!
Great Video just amazing advice !! i get that feeling a lot of being lazy and just need a latte to boost me etc ....and i spend about 5 hours painting just a small area on the canvas for the sake of getting things as i wanted it to be as much as possible!! i need to get back to gym routine, yoga and just attract more positive and new people =) all for inspiration..Thank you A LOT.
you are such an inspiration! thank you for all that valuable time for the videos you've made. it has provided me some really valuable insights, and i am grateful. :))
Hi, Love your videos--lots of great, useful advice--thanks. Something to ponder though--before shunning someone who is negative as a way of enhancing a positive atmosphere, it may be better for you, them, and the world if you try to understand why they are negative. Many are good people who can't see how annoying they are to others--shunning them merely pushes the problem somewhere else. Try to be a positive influence, provide feedback--we need to be each other's mirror more than we are.
Hi I was wondering if you could answer something for me, I'm an art student in my last year of high school and before anyone ever starts on a piece, we always have to come up with "what is the meaning behind it" and I always find this hard because sometimes I just want to create something because well I think it looks good and is a good idea, to be put simply. Could you suggest anything? Oh and on a side note, I checked out your website and your cosmic gallery was quite interesting :)
Ah, I see what you mean. I do have compassion for negative people, and am one myself all too often. I'm not saying you shouldn't love others, just that it's unhealthy to hurt yourself in the process. This is not about "shunning," but about healthy boundaries. You can aim to love everyone while also protecting yourself from personal harm. I cannot produce good art without my mental "space" being positive. I'm very sensitive and easily "poisoned" by others. I know not everyone has this limitation.
Well, I get it--the teacher wants you to think about your work on multiple levels--aesthetics AND meaning. Good art has both--the skill of making beauty is a tool to convey your meaning. Meaning IS important--keep that in mind long-term. But playing with aesthetics alone is important too. There are 2 approaches here for the school assignments: 1) Choose a meaning that inspires you and do the art around that. 2) Make up some BS to please the teacher and do the thing you really want to do. :D
@jhojhajhe020609 I assume you're in the U.S.? You can be a sole proprietor without doing anything specific aside from claiming your business's income when you do your taxes. You are also required to pay sales tax to your state for sales within the state. Registering your business name is smart but not mandatory. Google "how to start a business in (state)"
What is the meaning of getting inspired?? I literally do not know about it. Something which stimulate me to create? Mostly, I just copy the things which I feel really love... I hate to copy the exact things but I do not know how to overcome.
Hi Menghan! Yes, this is only my own perspective of course, but I do think inspiration is a feeling that stimulates you to create your own new thing--the excitement and challenge of making something entirely new. You feel the wheels turning in your mind and can't stop thinking about what you want to do and how you might do it. As for copying things, try to think about it like copying little things from many different places and putting those things together in your own new way, rather than simply copying something you love that someone else did. All art is "copying." All ideas came from somewhere else. As the saying goes, "there is nothing new under the sun." But creativity is when you have collected many small things from your life experience, including things you love from other artists, and decided to compile those things in your own way. By doing this you'll create something that is truly unique. I recommend the very short book "Steal Like an Artist" if you haven't read it yet!
Agree 1 Million percent....you're Beautiful and you have a Great Heart....Love your Videos!!
You strike me as a very wise woman. Thanks for these tips!

Music always inspires me and I tend to take pictures of random things that inspire me so I can sketch them later.
