You are correct, this is absolutely the best metal riff ever created by man. I was in awe when I first heard this album back in the day, it's the personification of all evil metal guitar riffs that create the vision of death and doom and mayhem with every note.
It really deserves a bigger place in metal history. It was so powerful for me at 14... It's nice to see others share my opinion. The Big F, Dr Vine is another...
Im old...I grew up in the 80's.. My first intro to metal was Black Sabbath, then we ventured into sum Grim Reaper, Iron Maiden, alice C, ZEPP, Hatchet, but I was like,,,nope wrong direction...then came ozzy, Metallica, Megadeth, and Metal Church...With all that New found Metal, and Weed.....I blew my mind out!!! Great times my friend. I havent been the same since, it changed my life...Ive been playing guitar since then too...Rock on my Metal Headed brother!!! \m/
This song and this album are special to me. It was the door opener to everything heavy when I was about 17. Still such a great song. Nothing really compares today. Maybe I'm just getting old.
"Devil's tritone shit goin' on" . Damn straight, my Friend. Fuckin genius. Cheers. You da man Doug steele. Why can't more people on this planet be like you?
Cool! You like the same shit that gets me stoked. I grew up in New Jersey living a couple blocks from SODs loudmouth. I bought a Vantage Flying V bass guitar from Billy. I went into the Marine Corps Dec26, 1985. Fellow jarhead turned me onto Metal Church. Next Mercyful Fate. Keep the torches lit, my friend.
Right on. I moved to Florida when I got out of the Marine Corps and played in a death metal band for a couple years. Been working on a project with a couple people. Got a monster bass setup.
I remember buying this album sometime in the mid-80s because when I was going through the record shop I thought the smoky guitar album cover looked awesome. Wasn't disappointed. There was a clunker or two, like the deep purple cover, but overall a good album. Oh, and SOD was fantastic.. Bought that album in the late 80s because I thought the title as a teenage boy was funny. I went on hunches and they always paid off. Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Doug, you did take my Metal Church T-shirt, back in 1984… I could only name 2 songs on the album 💿. Thanx for not beating my ass too badly-And, great guitar lesson! -hope you still have that shirt tho…
Im not into ripping on ppl..unless you have a higher sub count, you watch my videos, steal some of my shit, and act as if I don't exist. Then I become your fucking bad karma.
@@dougsteeleguitar Absolutely. Beyond the Black was just before that on the cassette, what a killer lead over that pounding rhythm on Beyond the Black. Metal Church was right up there with the best them around '85-'86. Another great band from Seattle and an early Terry Date production. There should be a thrash metal hall of fame and Metal Church should be in it 🎸

I didn't watch this all the way first time I commented. Didn't see (hear) the comment on SOD. Seriousl, you had a SOD cover band going on? How did that go? A twin axe attack would crumble foundations with that crunch! When someone told me Billy was playing in SOD back in 85 I thought they meant bass.
@@dougsteeleguitar I don't know how to play triplets fast. How do you think of it? The issue is when the tempo is slower and I can hear every note I can play it but when the tempo gets faster and counting notes is impossible I get lost. When I play four 16th notes to beat I start always with downstroke and it is a logical group of 4 notes so even when tempo gets faster I know exactly where I am but 3 notes per beat always confuse me.
As a drummer growing up, this was my favorite song to play live... I was just sitting here noodling on a guitar (I really can't play that damn instrument..haha) and accidentally played something that sounded like Metal Church and thought I better go find an actual guitar player to see how to play it correctly...haha I was WRONG of course.... I only share a link to this video because at the very beginning you can hear the outro of my band playing Metal Church live and I just happened to have KILLED that final drum fill....hahaha ruclips.net/video/QXDWjzfa-iM/видео.html Thanks for the video Doug!

Amazing song.
I also love this song. Metal Church and Dark Angel are SEVERELY underrated.
Thank you . One of the best riff ever. Now back to practising thx :)
Awesome lesson! Straight to the point. Not endless fret talk and 1 minute apart notes.
Cheers. Well, it's not about me, at least it shouldn't be.
I have always loved Metal Church and especially this song since I first heard them back in 85' when I was 18.
That's good!!
Great , great album. Not enough said about these guys. 🤘🏻

Dude hell yes!!!!!
Dude I was in a fucking SOD cover band as Billy Milano lol. I gotta digitize that shit.

Anytime. Yeah, that guitar on the shirt was kind of hard to make out (for me, anyways)..I thought it was a fucking tombstone or some shit..
Well said couldn't agree more I'm glad somebody I watch on a regular basis gave this song it's due I fucking love this tune fucking A right doggy!!!
It's a great song. i'd cover it in a heartbeat.

Love your tone! Can you show your rig sometime ?
Rig is 30 watt Fender GDec.

Enjoyed the lesson. Love Metal Church. The intro might not be a D chord. Sounds like it goes f# to c#.
Maybe, but then it's no longer diminished, and that intro is clearly diminished.
Early 80's for me I was probably 14
I never really heard much metal church, I've always heard their band name, but what am I missing? from hearing you, it's sounds pretty badass!
Find the song and check it out.
I can't play this rhythm. It is totally confusing me. The odd number of notes is so weird.
Keep trying. If you persist, it should happen. Fight through it!

why does the g chord still ring without your fingers on the fretboard?
Black magic! Or it could be the open d and g strings.
Your voice sounds similar to Dee Snider when you talk ...just something i noticed and not meant to be derogatory
Ha ha, that's a rad compliment, I'll take it!!! Thanks!! Love your name too.
