My Boyfriend says he grew up listening to this song when he was still a young boy. It was one of his favorite tunes back then, and still is today. He even calls me his: "CHEROKEE MAIDEN".
Merle's nod to Western Swing, tribute to Bob Will and his Texas Playboys. Just superb always liked this one. Many thanks for sharing. RIP Merle Haggard. you will go on, here, forever
A stand out classic from Merle. A really good nod in the direction of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, complete with all the Hee haws that Bob used to throw in. Just so good. Making excellent use of the last of the boys from the band too. Superb, like some of the other posts say this gem of a song should get more recognition. It's one of Merle's finest moments, he does the genre justice. Long live Merle Haggard and long live Western swing
A great selection of classic country and western music in the upper right. Kinda like a juke box used to be back in the day when music was great. As Dave Nemo used to say on WWL, 870 AM in New Orleans on his all night radio show, music the was it used to was. I used to flip back and forth between him and Ole Bill on WBAP.
One night when the moon was bright on the moonlit bay That is where I found my little Cherokee maid The memory of the that night of love, is lingering yet And I know I never will forget My little Cherokee maiden, I love her so And though we're far apart I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her For anybody else's heart Someday I'll make a trip back to that Cherokee Strip And I'll carry her away with me And straight as an arrow flies We'll ride to paradise My sweet little chickadee, my little Cherokee maiden and me My little Cherokee maiden, I love her so And though we're far apart I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her For anybody else's heart Someday I'll make a trip back to that Cherokee Strip And I'll carry her away with me And straight as an arrow flies We'll ride to paradise My sweet little chickadee, my little Cherokee maiden and m
Western Swing done right as MH surrounded himself with what was left of the Texas Playboys..... a mighty fine recording and great memories . Thx for the post .
Here you go KK; when I hear this song; (But I don't go to Bars, just love the Hag) I think of you and John; you two were really in love. and you two made 2 beautiful babies. I am still sad at Merle passing; I sure hope he's making someone happy. Love and prayers.
This was actually the final single where he/they were officially credited as 'Merle Haggard And The Strangers.' Also, it was a grouped two-sided hit single. The flip side was entitled "What Have You Got Planned Tonight Diana." This double selection reached the top number one position on the United States of America BILLBOARD entertainment magazine 'Hot Country Singles' chart exactly forty years ago this coming week. I never heard it until now.. :-]
I have to wonder, who is the 1 person who disliked this? I mean, really??? What were they expecting to hear? Some plastic banana garbage from some failed pop-wannabe, singing a pop-music rejected song that they now call Country Music today? Please...get a grip and rewind your listening material at least 30 yrs (60 yrs would be even better) and bask in some true country talent and get your mind right

A tribute as well to hall of fame songwriter Cindy Walker.
She definitely deserves a lot more recognition than she has gotten.

Rest In Peace Merle! You'll be sorely missed but will never be forgotten. I got my son into listening to you and Marty Robbins.
