Good as usual Professor. Hope they get Celebrini but think Chicago will magically land him. We have a lot of cap space and prospects so maybe that will improve soon. 844 subscribers! Only 156 to go. Would love to do a podcast with you sometime about the Sharks and our fandom.

Hertl's 8 y contract was ridiculous by its own, only Vlasic's was worse, Couture's is also pretty bad. These are the consequences when you feed a 30+yo, not world class player with a massive 6+ year deal...

Sad to see Hertl go, especially to Vegas, but it makes sense, and I wish the best for him. Also, I think the Sharks are hoping Vanacek can bounce back by next year's deadline so he can be flipped again (he will be a UFA next year)

The Hertl one stings. I get that it’s for the best with a rebuilt, but doesn’t change that I still feel sad and angry about it… Hope he wins a cup this year and VGK completely implodes next year

At least without a retention slot available, maybe now the Sharks will start playing prospects instead of taking on washed up bottom 6 players and hoping to flip them later.

Vegas got a gift for the expansion draft compared to the Sharks. San Jose got the Northstars scraps and the rest of the leagues Brian Mullens of the world. Vegas won a cup in the first 5 years.

I guess my concern for the Sharks is that they're not announcing a rebuild...Every three years...Like Arizona keeps doing. Draft picks and prospects are good but you have to build. I get it that this is essentially year one for the Sharks full rebuild though. I just feel bad for San Jose fans.

Grier actually did use the word rebuild in his post deadline press conference, which is more acknowledgment of it than I thought we’d ever get.

For the most part I think Grier did pretty well. Managing to move on from the Simeck contract and getting a player with some decent upside was impressive. Definitely not blown away by the Hertl trade but I think when consider all the details of Hertl and his contract it makes sense. We also have 2 first round draft picks for the next 3 years straight. So we could be looking at a pretty beefy prospect pool at the end of that. Also I found it kind of funny that we now have 2 former devils goal tenders. Maybe he’ll have a nice bounce back like Blackwood did.
    Thanks for the great coverage!

Hey Professor, okay...I change my mind. Can I unquit? hahaha Lots of moving parts here but, from my perspective and most Sharks fans not unexpected. I always thought that the the only real assets we have remaining were Hertl and Couture and given the Captains weird injury struggles at this point in his career it did not seem likely any suitors would come calling for him.
Hertl on the other hand I thought might get some attention and even though he is recovering from a clean out operation of his knee still proved to be a desirable piece. I wish it had been someone other than Vegas but, given the seriousness of the knee injuries that Hertl has sustained in the past I don't know how long Hertl will be able to play in the league in any capacity so I am glad that Hertl was willing to accept the trade so that he can make a run at a championship before he is forced to hang 'em up.
That said, given the further diminishing of our already shallow pool of skill it will be hard to find bright spots from game to game as we are likely to be overwhelmed by most teams. I hope the boys can hang in there.

I suppose this trade was good for Hertl since he is on a team that is a cup contender, sharks couldn't move him without his ok, right? Guess Knights will have to deal with the injuries. That light at the end sharks tunnel keeps getting further and further away, what a mess!

I freaking hate this trade. Commend him? Dealing Hertl to Vegas is not commendable as a fan of the Sharks.

I understand the feelings, it’s definitely a tough pill to swallow. But at the end of the day, it’s a business, and if there really weren’t any other takers, you gotta do what you gotta do. It’s going to be VERY weird seeing Hertl in that tacky golden helmet though.

@@professorhockey He is 30 and has had knee issues. He will not make it to the end of that contract. Love him but Grier may actually know what he is doing. Wilson and his albatross contracts are slowing being passed on to others.
