Darrell, I have listened to various interviewers speaking to vetrans and you are by far the best at helping them to tell their story. I believe that the act of telling their story actually assists them to overcome some of the trauma.

Brother, I didn't go to the VA til I was 69. I felt very much the same. I didn't "know" that I was a veteran & had to be told by my father-in-law that I was. Don't know why I thought that other than to me, a veteran is some guy who low-crawled in a battlefield, taking fire. It's taken me several years to figure out what I was. I have a very patient wife. My FIL gave me my 1st Nam hat. Now it's my turn to say "WELCOME HOME BROTHER" to those I meet. To you Carl, I would say "WELCOME HOME"

I feel bad for this guy. When he breaks down Hes talking about helping load ordinance on his squadron's aircraft and says, " I killed a lot of people ". Individually he didn't kill anyone. I was an aviation ordinance man during the Vietnam mess, loaded tons of weapons on aircraft over a nine-month period. I never thought of myself as killing anyone, I might have been part of the process but that's how the Navy works it's a team effort. The ships barbers and cooks are part of this same process. I think he should realize this. The military has a singular mission, it requires teams of people to facilitate the elimination of the enemy! All that being said Vietnam was a big mistake! I feel bad for everyone involved but especially members of the Army and Marine's.

He mentions audiologist, and it's critical for people who have difficulty hearing to not just amplify sound by putting a loudspeaker in their ear in the form of some cheap so-called hearing aid. Consonants help us know the difference between the words: rat, sat, fat, chat, that, splat. An audiologist can identify exactly which sounds are difficult to hear and modify the hearing aid channels to target only those frequencies (letter-sounds) the person needs to increase their ability to comprehend sound vs just "hear." Unfortunately, most hearing aids are just loudspeakers in the ear - which eventually cause more damage to the hearing mechanism and increases the risk of total deafness. For this guy and anyone else who is having difficulty hearing, a trained audiologist can screen for every letter-sound frequency (pitch) that correlates to a particular letter sound of our language, and also the decibel (loudness) level, to dial in the hearing aid channels. A high quality audiologist will make the difference between programming the hearing aid to increase understanding the noise vs just hearing sound. His hearing damage seems to be mostly in the high frequencies because of the jet sounds. In other words, the sounds that make high frequencies are associated with the letters S, CH, F. Whereas, people who were around the bombs might have low frequency or low pitch damage for the letter sounds such as R, L, M, D, etc. It's important to know exactly what frequencies the person cannot hear well, and to increase only those frequencies versus just blasting sound into the ear. A person may be perfectly capable of hearing certain sounds but not interpreting speech because they're missing the capacity to comprehend the noise. Good luck with this because it's obvious that he pulled back completely from his valuable and irreplaceable social contributions simply because he was having difficulty with hearing. Or more specifically, difficulty with interpreting speech sounds correctly. He did what he was hired to do, and he did it to the best of his ability, and it obviously has traumatized him very much to know that he contributed to the killing of many innocent people, and the deaths of many people that he was in combat with. What a very sensitive gentleman and a model for how to conduct oneself.

Geez, if the Army had offered me OCS, I'd have asked "When do I report???". I hated every minute of being an enlisted man; it seemed like you mopped floors and cleaned latrines more than you did your actual job. I also put off going to the VA for a long time too. I always felt that there were guys who were far worse off than I was. Finally went because the job I had didn't have medical insurance. I was depressed, had a nervous collapse, and I finally had to admit to myself that I needed help. I've gotten better care there than my folks have in the private health care system.

@@rokzupan8269 research the actual reasons for the war. Look at the stories of the south Vietnamese. Look at the millions who were murdered by the communist take over of Vietnam. They set up communist re-education camps that were similar to concentration camps (obviously not to the same degree but very terrible nonetheless) listen to the media’s take on the how our POW’s were treated compared to the reality of what they actually went through. Yes we committed atrocities but we were the only thing defending Vietnam from being completely taken over. It’s sad when you read into the personal accounts from southern Vietnamese and American soldiers from that time period. Communism is not about freedom, it’s about control so that the “rulers” do not lose control. Millions upon millions of people have been killed by communist regimes more than the U.S. and other nations have ever killed. If I was in southern Vietnam I would have begged for any country to come in and protect me and my family and country from a hostile take over especially by communist regimes.

I have to agree with him about some of the superiors, and who I was involved with. There were some really nice guys, but we seemed to have more assholes than you could imagine. My first divison officer was a LTjg, nice guy. Our Division chief PO, biggest horses ass you could meet. We had more slackers who drank coffee and talked all day. They transferred our jg and we got this real hard ass Lt cmdr, who had a Napoleon complex...about 5 foot nothing. He brought his own chair. Could not believe that. What does that say. We had more drug addiction and alcoholics. I joined to serve, but it was strange times. A lot of people being pulled out of Vietnam, they needed to put them someplace. My ship was a dumping ground. I remember reading General Swarzkopfs book and he mentioned that after Vietnam, the military needed to be stripped down and rebuilt, based on what Vietnam did to the military and the attitude that many had afterwards. Did it make me grow up, yes, but you don't know it till you get discharged. Many people would ask me if I served over the years, based on my approach to things. That get it done attitude. Would I do it again, yes but my approach would be different.
Me neither..........I served 4 years on a heavy guided missile cruiser, same time period, and we used to refer to the carrier sailors (airdales) as candy asses, because they were. PTSD my ass.
@@lewiswereb8994 I've watched several of these interviews and a couple of them sound so fishy to me. this guy, as he explained, was such an asset to his squadron and he gets out after 21 months. back in the early '80's when I was in the navy, they extended a guy for a few months when we went into the yards because he was very knowledgeable of some repairs that was going to happen. he was an HT1 and I worked with him in the pipe shop. I just can't buy a guy getting out early who was such an asset...as he has told us???

Other vets they've interviewed were in front-line combat units and had less trouble recounting more traumatizing events than standing helplessly in a ops room listening to frantic chatter on the radio as a strike mission goes sideways.
He was referring to the universal origins of mankind regardless of race, geography, language or culture. We all originated from hunter/gathers peoples in East Africa.

I guess he came back 73 not 63, so they are talking at cross purposes. The interviewer is asking about how it feels to come back and watch the for war ten years and he replies that he got spat on etc., the spitting didn’t happen in 63.
Thank you Carl. Overly dramatic! I don't understand the deeply emotional behavior over his memories. He had it made being aboard a carrier off the coast of Vietnam, one of the safest places to be other than a hospital ship. I doubt seriously that he got his boss transferred to Guam. I speak from personal experience having spent 37 years in the Navy
Normally when they find unexploded explosives they blow them in place. If the explosive is to big to blow in place they will take it somewhere else to blow it up, not reuse it. Spent 8 years in 2 wars in combat zones. Some of the stuff the guy says is not credible at all.

Very common that once he retired & had no day-to-day work to distract him, the unprocessed trauma overwhelmed his capacity to deal with it. Workaholic, maybe? Thanks to the interviewer for not digging bcuz he is clearly not wanting to talk about certain things that everyone wants him to.
While serving as US Naval officer he was visiting Hong Kong and did something risky, foolish and/or illegal. He was arrested and held captive. A British officer intervened to get him released. He was then verbally reprimanded by the officer. Hong Kong was a member of the British Commonwealth in the mid 1960's.
He's a POSITIVE Guy who can find fun anywhere & did the best He could in the worse of times. I'm sure going deaf from war noise is NOT fun, but He didn't dwell on it.
I'm trying to figure that out to. He was on board an aircraft carrier! 3 hots and a cot. Where did the tearful stories of PTSD come from. I could understand if he were in the infantry. Hell if he were on a patrol boat in the riverine I could get it but a carrier?
ha ha I turned 17 in 1963 I remember the big protests in London that year . I didn't know where Vietnam was at the time but I remember the riot outside the American Embassy. I went to Vietnam in the early 90s and again 11 years later the country had come on about 40 years in that time . They are making great progress that was a completely unnecessary and cruel war

@@kechumgreen8893 Yeah, I dunno what to make of someone who gets so emotional about the events he recounted. Other vets they've interviewed were in front-line combat units and had less trouble recounting more traumatizing events than standing helplessly in a ops room listening to frantic chatter on the radio as a strike mission goes sideways.

I guess he came back 73 not 63, so they are talking at cross purposes. The interviewer is asking about how it feels to come back and watch the for war ten years and he replies that he got spat on etc., the spitting didn’t happen in 63.
Thank you Carl. Overly dramatic! I don't understand the deeply emotional behavior over his memories. He had it made being aboard a carrier off the coast of Vietnam, one of the safest places to be other than a hospital ship. I doubt seriously that he got his boss transferred to Guam. I speak from personal experience having spent 37 years in the Navy
Several things he says do not make sense to me.
Normally when they find unexploded explosives they blow them in place. If the explosive is to big to blow in place they will take it somewhere else to blow it up, not reuse it. Spent 8 years in 2 wars in combat zones. Some of the stuff the guy says is not credible at all.
Key word: normally. The military is nothing but the sum of its parts. Individuals can do things wrong even of there are rules in place.

Very common that once he retired & had no day-to-day work to distract him, the unprocessed trauma overwhelmed his capacity to deal with it. Workaholic, maybe? Thanks to the interviewer for not digging bcuz he is clearly not wanting to talk about certain things that everyone wants him to.

While serving as US Naval officer he was visiting Hong Kong and did something risky, foolish and/or illegal. He was arrested and held captive. A British officer intervened to get him released. He was then verbally reprimanded by the officer. Hong Kong was a member of the British Commonwealth in the mid 1960's.

ha ha I turned 17 in 1963 I remember the big protests in London that year . I didn't know where Vietnam was at the time but I remember the riot outside the American Embassy. I went to Vietnam in the early 90s and again 11 years later the country had come on about 40 years in that time . They are making great progress that was a completely unnecessary and cruel war
