The basis of the name Volunteers is historic; during the battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 1500 Tennesseans served under Andrew Jackson and then we volunteered well over represented in the Mexican American war.
Volunteer derives from a culture of Tennesseans serving outside of their own self interests, originating over 200 years ago in war. Same reason Davy Crockett is one of the mascots.

Some important history here... The Tennessee Vols (we say "Vawls") was one of the greatest football programs until around 2006. We were Alabamas main rival, having more wins against them than any other program and a very close series. We made horrible hires since 2006 while Bama made some of the greatest hires. Around that time they hired Nick Saban to be head coach- he is now considered the best coach in the game. They beat us for 16 years straight until this year. Our coach is in his second year and is turning this program back to the legend it once was.
Fun facts: Our fight song is widely considered the best fight song in College football, "Rocky Top" a bluegrass song that references the school being by the Smokey mountains (the second verse is about killing federal agents that tried to stop us from illegally making moonshine)
We are the Volunteers because Tennessee men volunteered in large numbers to avenge Davey Crockett (from Tennessee) after his death at the Alamo.

And if you like to watch more fast paced games, Tennessee is definitely the one to watch. They are snapping the ball faster than any other team and their offense is extremely fast paced. Alabama had nearly DOUBLE the time of Possession in this game, but a touchdown in 2 minutes is just as good as a TD in 8 minutes.

Also, on the punt where Alabama turns it over and the coach goes mad; since Alabama was receiving the punt, anytime one of their players makes any kind of contact with the ball, it’s considered live, meaning the kicking team can also recover the ball and maintain possession. Albeit a huge mistake, from the players point of view, I’m almost positive he thought his teammate touched the ball first, thus why he was attempting to recover it before a Tennessee player. With the condensed versions of these games, I know sometimes it jumps to the next play without any explanation.

A BIG difference in college to NFL is the"hash marks" are closer together in the NFL . (Small yrd lines in the middle of the field)
When a player is tackled outside of the hash marks the refferies reset the ball for the next play to the nearest hash mark.
This effects offensive play calling but mostly defensive alignment because with them being closer together in the NFL there is no short side (boundary side) & wide side (field side) of the field . The ball is placed more in the center after each restart making both sides of the field harder to defend.

It DOES matter on field goals, because whichever hash you go down closest to, that’s where the field goal is taken from. If you’re curious why we’re called The Volunteers or Vols for short, during the war of 1812, all states were called to send at least 3,500 men. Tennessee sent about 28,000 volunteers over the course of the war. Since then, Tennessee has been known as the Volunteer State. The volunteer spirit was seen again in recent years when my childhood friend, Holly Bobo, was abducted from her home in 2011. The day she was taken, over 400 volunteers joined law enforcement in the search and that number quickly grew as hundreds more flooded in from all over the state to aid the search.

Differences between the NFL and college.
    1. Skill - players in the NFL are the best from college football.
    2. Size and power - extra years to add more muscle.
    3. Some rules - for example in college if you fall down or touch your knee or elbow you are down. In the NFL you have to be pushed down or touched while on the ground. Two feet down for a catch in the NFL vs only one for college. Distance between the hash-marks and differences in penalties.
    4. Team size - the NFL is limited to 53 players but only 46 can suit up, in college you can have up to 125 players on the team. Different conferences will make rules on how many players can suit up for home/away and playoff/bowl games. They can have 85 players on a full ride scholarship.
4a Number of teams/schools - The NFL has 32 teams but there are around 130 FBS (top level) schools. Only 22 teams have won more than two national championships and only 13 have won 3 or more.
    5. Age of the Game - Universities have also been playing much longer than the NFL teams have been around. For FBS schools (top level) Michigan started playing Notre Dame in 1887 but have only played 44 times. Army (US Army Military Academy aka West Point) vs Navy (US Navy Naval Academy) started playing each other in 1890 and have played 122 times. Minnesota and Wisconsin started playing the same year and have met 131 times. Texas started playing Oklahoma in 1900, which is seven years before Oklahoma became a state (it was just a US territory before). 20 of the NFL teams started in the 60's or later.
    6. Stadium size - college stadiums DWARF NFL stadiums. The eight largest stadiums in the US are all college stadiums. College stadiums make up 8 of the top 10 stadiums in the WORLD. Okay, AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys) can fit 105,000 people but it only has seats for 80,000.
    7. Traditions - College football has deep and long traditions. Also, you never have to worry that some billionaire is going to move the team to another city. A lot of people root for the university they attended so there is a much closer connection to the team.
    8. All games matter - In the NFL you can lose games and still make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. In college, losing even a single game can keep you out of the playoffs/championship. The national championship game has only been a thing since 1992 (don't ask). Only once during this time (2007) did a team play for the championship with more than a single loss.

Another reason Tennessee is called the Volunteer State is because of the number of men from Tennessee who volunteered to go to Texas and fight at the Alamo, with David Crockett, a Tennessean, as well as the men who volunteered during the Mexican-American War. There were more Tennesseans at the Alamo than Texans. Tennesseans have been well represented in every war.
P.S. We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth. She was much loved, respected, and admired here in the states.

That red line at the end of the game is a graphic that the TV crew will put on there to show the viewer how far away the kicker can make a kick. You’re allowed to attempt a field goal from anywhere, but if you miss it the other team gets the ball wherever you attempt the kick from. So most teams want to try and get as close as possible before they kick a field goal if they can’t score a touchdown. But that red line is just to help us see where that teams kicker can make a field goal from

4:00 to answer the question, On a touchdown play, the team gets to decide where to place the ball for the Try (extra point, or 2 point conversion attempt). Sometimes they may want it on one side if they are going for 2 points to run it in again if they have a play designed for it. But on regular plays, the ball is placed where the player went down unless it is outside the hash marks (the interior 2 sets of yard markers) and it gets brought back closer to the middle. College hash marks are a bit wider and further apart than in the NFL, which gives them more room on some plays, but can make kicking field goals harder.

I grew up playing soccer and learned from the age of five until I played American football in high school. I'll tell you this about the difference between the two as far as my experience. Soccer is funner to play if you have the energy to run that much. However the position I played in football as the kicker meant that I stood on the sidelines the whole time and would come in during a pressure situation because in high school back then you couldn't warm up kicking on the sideline with a tee and net because my school was cheapskates. But like I said before soccer was more fun for me than playing football. However backyard football growing up was just as fun as soccer but on top of that I have to say that American football is the funnest and most entertaining team sport to watch.

The time in between plays is good because it's like military strategy. The formations both teams line up in before the ball is snapped is part of the excitement. You can see mismatches and where to attack on offense based on alignments and what you need to defend against if you're on defense. Will the offense try to throw the ball toward the sideline or over the middle? Short or deep? You have to have those options covered, but if you have too many players defending the pass then the offense could run the ball for a lot of yards before you can get to them. It's an educated guess or prediction on every play. Teams study game film of the teams they are playing leading up to the game. So they see if player A lines up in this position then they are likely trying to run or pass based off what they have done previously. Sometimes the defense will attack and send more players to tackle the quarterback but they have to get there fast because they won't have enough players covering receivers. The offense is always trying to keep the defense guessing by changing things. They are trying to figure out if the defense is playing man to man or if a defensive player is just covering a certain zone on the field. That's why players on offense will move sideline to sideline before the ball is snapped. That allows the offense to see if a defender moves with him. That tells the offense that the defender is playing man to man. Meaning that defender is responsible for that offensive player. Can that offensive player beat that defender one on one? If they can then that's probably where you want to go with the ball. If I watched a game with you and broke it down as they played you would love it. You start to see what the teams are looking at and trying to accomplish before the play begins, and what makes certain players so good. It's like rugby and chess mixed together. Every player is responsible for a certain task on every play and it's not always the same. On running plays the offensive linemen are trying to move defensive lineman certain ways to open holes for the runner to run through. The runner and everybody in the team knows which hole in the line is supposed to open up. Can the offensive linemen do their job and open the hole? Can the running back find a way to gain yards even if the whole doesn't open up? Each play is like a battle. Each position is a battle. The whole game is a war.

No, it doesn't matter what part of the endzone you enter to score. In college, it only matters if the ball crosses the plane. You'll often see some really wide touchdown's when the carrier just extends their arm so the ball crosses the plane before they are thrown out of bounds. Where the pylons are. The extra point attempt is always going to be dead center. If a team doesn't manage to score and is in field goal distance and they opt to try for the field goal, then it matter where the ball is. It could be center, it could be left, it could be right. There are two lines that run down the field around the center. You'll line up somewhere inside those for the field goal. It can get a little tricky to judge a touchdown if the carrier crosses the ball over, but for instance maybe his knee was down before then...they'll mark it short. They often review a lot of those plays.

    I. Love. Football !!! 🏈🏈🏈 I’m a Mississippi girl and the teams of the SEC - Ole Miss, Miss State, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, etc.(Southeastern Conference)are usually bitter enemies. My state teams aren’t doing great this year and I’ve never rooted for TN but I am this year. Alabama is usually the unbeatable Goliath of the SEC and always nationally ranked. And Nick Saban (Alabama) is one of the greatest college coaches ever. TN hasn’t won against them for 15 games. I’m so proud of TN this year and I’m rooting for them as National Champions. And no, it doesn’t matter where they cross the goal line to score. Any fraction of the football must ‘cross the plane of the goal line’ and the pylons are on the goal line. The football has to pass over the goal line inside the pylons and it’s a touchdown. And the NFL are the best of the best from college. Several of these players, esp. QB Hooker, Bryce Young, J. Hyatt, are NFL caliber. There are even high school athletes that are so good that they are drafted by the NFL from HS.

One of the biggest differences between NCAA and NFL football is speed. Everything happens faster, that 280 pound linebacker is getting to the QB a second or two faster. The QB is releasing the ball in under a second. That 220 pound running back impacts like a 300 pound lineman. Bigger, Faster, Stronger
Also in college level sports, a solid 60% of your players are just making memories. They have full degrees and are working towards their future in the business world. In the NFL, every single player is spending everyday of their life getting better at their craft, getting faster, stronger....bigger. Its really noticeable at the QB position, you see alot of QBs that are highly sought after in the draft, have amazing combine and pro day showings...and proceed to shit the bed once the lights come on. Outside of the basic premise of the game and the fundamentals of a position, nothing translates from college to the NFL

There are some minor differences in the rules of college and NFL football. For instance, a catch in college football only requires one foot in bounds, provided that it’s the foot that hits the ground first, but in the NFL, if you don’t get both feet in bounds and have control of the ball, then it’s an incomplete pass

  • @jordankillian9023

3:48 it doesn’t matter too much but if you look at the middle of the field there are 2 lines that go endzone to endzone and whichever side the ball is closest to at the end of the play is where the ball is placed for the start of the next play. For example if someone is tackeld on the left side of the field, the ball will be placed on that yard line on the left hash for the next play. This rule applies for field goals as well but in this scenario it’s an extra point and I believe the kicker gets a choice on where he wants it. Hope this helps.

The biggest difference between college and NFL players is that the college players may make more mistakes, but they are more passionate and give it more heart and effort because they don't get paid and do it for the school and love of the game. The college fans are also more passionate than NFL fans. You will NEVER see NFL fans half as passionate as the Tennessee fans or other fan bases. I used to watch NFL but no longer. I ONLY watch college football now.
Some of the rules are different between the two. In college football for instance, when the player with the ball falls, the play is dead there, but in NFL, if the player with the ball falls, he can get back up and run again unless he fell as a result of a defense touching him made him fall. But if he trips himself and falls, he can get back up and run.
Also, with a pass interfere penalty in college, it's a 15 yard penalty from where the previous play started, but in NFL, wherever the pass interfere penalty happens, that's where the offense gets the ball. So if a QB passes the ball 50 yards down the field and the receiver gets interfered with, it's a 50 yard penalty. But if the pass interfere penalty occurs in the end zone, they get the ball on the one yard line.
Another difference is the overtime rules. In college, each team gets the ball from the 25 yard line to try to score, so after one team gets a chance, the other team gets a chance from the 25 yard line, and they keep playing until someone wins and there is no running clock. In NFL, they flip a coin to see who gets the ball first. If the first team gets a field goal, then the other team gets a chance to score, but unlike college, they don't start from the 25 but have regular kick offs. If they both match field goals, they keep going. But whatever team is the first to score a TD wins the game. So it's possible that the other team will never get the ball at all in overtime. Also, if the score is tied after 15 minutes, the game just ends in a tie.

To answer your question, it does NOT matter where on the field you score a TD. The PAT (extra point) will always be tried from straight on. Field goals however, ARE placed on the hash marks. The hash marks (the white lines on either side of the center of the field) in college are MUCH wider apart than they are in the NFL. So even though the college uprights are wider apart in college, the angles for a field goal can be much sharper in college. Hope that helps

One of the biggest differences between College and NFL is that in the NFL you must be tackled by contact so if you simply fall down and no defender touched you, you can then get back up and run. In college if you fall to the ground you are down even if no one touched you. In the NFL to complete a catch you have to have both feel down and college only requires 1. College Overtime will continue until a winner is decided where as the NFL OT is only 1 extra period and if still tied the game then ends in a tie. The clock will stop in College after a 1st down but will not in the NFL. The NFL has 2 minute warning at the end of 2nd and 4th quarters and College does not. NFL coaches have video replay challenge flags they can use where in College all video review is initiated by the officials in a booth. NFL has a much better playoff system based on wins and losses with several layers of tie breakers such as head to head or conference record. College has playoffs but a committee simply picks the 4 teams with no clue about what criteria they use. I can't think of anymore right now but if I do I will comment again lol.

Re. your question about where a given player in American football can score a touchdown relative to the goal-line:
First, pardon me if I'm not the first to provide an answer
In American football, unlike in "soccer" football where the scoring area is a more-confined space, its scoring area is called an "end zone", and it extends laterally from pylon to pylon and ten yards deep to the rear of the end zone where the goal posts are located. Once any player with the ball in their possession crosses their opponent's goal-line anywhere between the two pylons, they've scored a touchdown. If they're a receiver who catches a pass anywhere inside the end zone, that's also a TD. Also, if they are diving towards the end zone and they cross the imaginary infinite vertical plane of the goal-line, with ball in-hand, and that ball crosses the plane with them, it's a TD if their knees don't touch the field outside of the goal-line. If their knees do contact the ground before the ball crosses the plane, they are considered down at the spot where their knees made contact, and the ball is spotted there to set-up the next play -- f on fourth down, the opposing team assumes possession there.

I will say this about college athletes and getting paid: a law was passed recently which now allows college athletes to make money through independent merch (known as NIL, or Name, Image, and Likeness). Schools have never been legally allowed to pay the athletes (note:. A lot of schools did it anyways through various loopholes and workarounds). So players can make their own merchandise and stuff and make money legally now. It's really complex, but basically a lot of the better football schools have an association of fans that pool their money together to pay their college athletes, especially if they're a highly-ranked recruit . Alabama has one of the largest of these associations in the country; so, they're able to pay their players much, much more than most schools can.
I attend the University of Iowa (Hawkeyes), but most of my family is from Tennessee and attended the U of T, so I kinda root for both. Iowa recently lost a recruit to Alabama because Alabama just had more money to offer him than we did. It's an understandable decision, but that's kind of just how it is now. Pretty much the entire college football world hates Alabama, and now with me being into the Vols and the Hawkeyes... well, I might hate them more than most lol.
So glad you're getting into American football! College football is much better, IMO. Much more passionate fans.

There are many rule differences. For instance in college Pass Interference is a spot foul up to 15 yards but in the pros it's a spot foul, there is no limit on distance. Also during the college game, the clock would stop after every first down which doesn't happen in the pros. The difference in game time between college in pros was quite a lot. So college has adapted the rule to be more like the pros but there's still difference.
