The Chad Mitchell Trio had a similar song called, "The Historical Bum.'' "I was born about ten thousand years ago There a'int nothing in this world that I don't know. I saw Peter, Paul, and Moses Playing Ring Around the Roses, And I'll whup the guy what says it isn't so. I'm just a lonesome traveler, a great historical bum, Highly educated, through history I have come. I built the Rock of Ages, it was in the year of one; And that's about the biggest thing that man has ever done..."
I often see the lyrics posted with a verse about Donoghue's and Luke, but I never actually hear it being sung, does anyone know a version of this song where it is sung?
Ok, so I'm a 90's kid, and I'll be the first to say, 90's music was, generally terrible. Don't get me wrong, there were exceptions to that. I grew up listening to my dad's music. Mostly to classic rock (Boston, foreigner, etc.), Elvis and the Beatles. But my dad always laughed about how my taste in music was older then his. I love folk music like Tommy Maken and the Clancy Brothers, and people like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.
@@stephanginther9051 as a 19-year-old I agree with you...I'm Albanian but love classic Irish Folk instead of listening to the music of my generation....what can I say? I tried to talk about the Clancy Brothers with a friend of mine and do you know what did he say? He said "girl you are telling to me a lot of lies, those Clancy never existed, you invented them!!!!"
+Jennifer Burdoo the Battle of the Boyne, King Billy refers to the Dutch Prince William of Orange i think he was fighting with King James of England His Father-in-Law.
+Jennifer Burdoo Derry's walli think is on about those little apprentice boys that shut the gate, as for Paisley its could be that arse of a Reverend Ian Paisley. but this is just my thought's on the lyrics.
+James Grange Raised in Arizona, currently in Florida. I know less than I'd like about Irish politics, but I love Celtic music regardless of its viewpoint. I did think about Ian Paisley, but I have the impression this was written before he came on the scene. Could be wrong.
love this song
I met Tommy Makem at the Sinn Fein Advice Centre in Omagh in 1983. And that's no lie.

Stringbean Akeman used to sing a similar song called "I'm the Man that Rode a Mule Round the World" that shares some of these lyrics. . . .

I've never understood the King Billy verse...
+Jennifer Burdoo the Battle of the Boyne, King Billy refers to the Dutch Prince William of Orange i think he was fighting with King James of England His Father-in-Law.
+James Grange I understand that part, it's the rest of it - Derry's Wall and "canonize young Paisley."
+Jennifer Burdoo Derry's walli think is on about those little apprentice boys that shut the gate, as for Paisley its could be that arse of a Reverend Ian Paisley. but this is just my thought's on the lyrics.
+Jennifer Burdoo also if you dont mind me Asking, Where are ya from?
