2012 RSD Releases:
The 12-inch single of Jack White's "Sixteen Saltines" comes complete with a playable etching on the b-side (designed by George Ingram), a cover of U2's "Love is Blindness." Truly a sight to behold, the etching depicts Third Man's iconic logo and the grooves of the record play through the image, presenting consumers with the world's first-ever playable etched record ®.This is an entirely different process (and look) from your Styx and Split Enz records from the 80's. No lasers, holograms, or rainbows are involved in this playable etching.
Available here: thirdmanstore....
As if that weren't enough, Third Man took the playable etching one step further and used the same parts to make a limited-edition version of the "Saltines" 12-inch single. Not only is the etching playable, but the record itself is pressed on clear vinyl and filled with psychedelic blue liquid. While the soundtrack for the 1978 film The Black Hole was initially prototyped as a liquid-filled disc, problems with leakage prevented it from ever being released. The liquid-filled "Saltines" is the first-ever disc of its kind to be made available to the public.
In addition to these two releases, Third Man is also releasing the new single from Karen Elson. The cover of Jackson C. Frank's "Milk and Honey" is pressed on milk and honey split-colored vinyl coupled with a laser-cut lace sleeve. The visual these two elements make when combined together is, as you can see, stunning.
Available here: thirdmanstore....
In addition to that, Third Man is releasing a red vinyl with black whisps edition of the White Stripes "Hand Springs" and "Red Death at 6:14", two songs that have been out of print on vinyl for over ten years.
Available here: thirdmanstore....
The liquid-filled record ® and laser-cut lace split-color will ONLY be available from Third Man Records physical location in Nashville (623 7th Ave S) on Record Store Day, April 21st, 2012. The playable etching will also be available from Third Man and a select number of record stores.
Was that jack that yelled "WHAT ABOUT CHOCOLATE MILK!".
yep
Yeet
Chocolate milk... O.o That sounded like Jack
Jack White its a genius because he made buy and made records be so exclusive and unique that you can even forget that there is digital music.
"What's with the balloon swank?!" haha who couldn't love jack!
Jack:"What about chocolate milk?"
Jack:"We get it!"
Jack:*cool looking, smoking jack* "What's with the balloon, Swank?"
(sorry, I love Jack White)
TMR is so great. I love their commercials. And all the stuff is cool... especially the liquid filled record. I've never seen anything like this before. Honestly, I don't think I could ever get an idea of something as amazing. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to get the new records for my collection. That's because I'm in Poland and I'm not flying to the USA in the near future... What a shame.
record store day has unfortunately been and gone for this year but it is a day of the year where the world celebrates vinyl records and bands and artists are encouraged to release special things to record stores across the world :) x
I thought that too.. A friend of mine had the Paradise Theater etched record and it was playable. I was surprised at the claim that this was the first one ever...
Jeeeeeeeezus, you guys have really upped the ante this year. Wish NY wasn't so damn far from Nashville.
that "never before done" innovation, the playable etched record?
Styx - Paradise Theater.
I love you guys but... yes, thank you - was thinking the same thing - 7-years later.
Love that liquid filled vinyl- very cool.
So excited for Record Store Day 2012!! TouchTones Music is running an amazing contest to win a turn table and a handful of exclusive vinyl. Check it out at a participating independent record store on April 21!
I live in Chicago. I would totally make the trip for the liquid-filled, hand springs, and Karen Elson vinyls, but I would drive 8.5 hours only to find out they are way out of my price range...naaahhh I'll stick with being a Vault member.
My thoughts exactly, wildbilltexas: Someone who knows his music history like JAck White should've known this. Styx's "Paradise Theater" was also laser-etched and playable too.
There needs to be a Third Man store in London!
Wow! Awesome stuff, I want it all!
That is so damn awesome. I read they tried that with the Black Hole soundtrack, but couldn't get it to work.
I need to go there.
WE GET IT !
I need to I need to live next to Third Man Records right now
I want a store in Paris, Fance. RIGHT NOW
Goddamn, I love you guys.
i would kill for that liquid filled record
AMAZING!!!
yet another reason to go shopping! wooo
be sure to get there really, really early. stuff sells out very fast at third man records.
Love what yall are doin btw
In 1981 styx made Paradise theater with an etched playable side. Sorry to burst the bubble
Touche. I agree. This is something great that you can experience now :) I'm all for a revival of recording technology from days past. I just wanted to educate a few people on a great band (Splint Enz), and maybe shed some light on a false comment. I guess I used the fact that you were from Australia (Split Enz was really popular in Australia) to post a kinda snarky remark. I'm sorry. We're all record lovers here.
i live in mississippi and i wish nashville wasn't so far away
got me. I thought that was Jack the whole time.
I CAN'T. You guys are so fucking cool. LIQUID FILLED?!
HOLY SHIT...
THAT IS SOME COOL SHIT.
"WHAT ABOUT CHOCOLATE MILK?!" that sounded like Jack... hahaha :)
"This is an entirely different process (and look) from your Styx and Split Enz records from the 80's. No lasers, holograms, or rainbows are involved in this playable etching."
epic win
I am going to have to make room for all the vinyl I am about to buy. Really hoping to win this Touchtunes usb turntable contest thats been going around. I wannttt iiittttt.
Yeah yeah yeah beautiful! Excellent! So turn of the century is already vintage? ;-)
Sorry but Split Enz's 1980 album "True Colours" was the first to use laser etching on both sides, totally playable, so it was done 32 years before yours. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Colours_(Split_Enz_album)
Sixteen Saltines- Jack White
I have the normal 12' single :'c but i want the liquid one :c
I want to pop that balloon SO bad! :P
What about strawberry milk... I don't like it, but it exists🔮
Now chocolate raspberry milk that's the ticket🚂
I loved these videos... it's like I'm being blinded with vinyl instead of science😲
I will give you all of the money for a liquid filled record. ALL OF THE MONEY.
@dipsydoodle57 Oh, that's exactly what I was thinking about a few days ago. I don't have any record with every song coloured in different colour. And I guess many people have problems with changing songs. I think it's a good idea...
I was mentioning this video to a friend of mine and he told me that Styx's album "Paradise Theater" (1981) had a playable etching. Wiki-pee-pee seems to corroborate this. What gives? (Great idea, mind you!) It's a shame they probably won't make it to Canada.
That liquid one looks dangerously psychedelic and strangely sexy... like platforms with goldfish... The thought of it leaking on my turntable is... hard to explain.
If that balloon would have popped, they would have been deaf for a couple of minutes.
Why didn't you guys have a video last time? Please release more things for RSD!
sixteen saltines by jack white
that would be easy to do with a picture disc. Just map out where the tracks are using the test pressing or laquer, then make labels accordingly.
we see you hiding behind that balloon ben!
Always ahead or behind the times...never au courant.
i love ben.
I want that liquid-filled record so bad.. Too bad the Netherlands is not that close to Nashville either.
smokin blunts
Isn't that the drummer of the Dirtbombs?
they'll be alright i have found vinyl that looks like someone shit on them and once cleaned up they play fine
What's being projected onto the balloon? I think something is...
LIQUID FILLED RECORD?!
i want the hand springs!!!!!
Hello Ben Blackwell. If i liked the video it would push the likes from 669 to 670...& to me, it just wouldn't be right...the Big Boss would agree am sure. LOL.
need more liquid filled vinyl
Yes , They would have to be "pulling " the phone booth door the wrong way , if they were pulling that is?
where the hell do they get the funds to finance such extravagant gems?
"WHAT ABOUT CHOCOLATE MILK???"
om my glob, I love psychedelic liquid filled records! Why the fuck don't I live in the States, now I'm gonna get ripped off on eBay >_>
bummer, i'll buy it off you
hmm.. Jack is looking good
i want that liquid record
Is the balloon a Magritte reference?
It sounds like Beck said that for some reason...
Black belles at the front door?
Yeah you're right! That guy obviously doesn't know much about the landmarks in record history!
what about chocolate milk!!!! XD
no chance of that ever being the case, Jack is really tall.
2:36 HOW DO YOU LIVE WITH YOURSELF!?
lolol jack is hilarious! pretty sure he said that.....right
I think Jack is probably influenced most by Nikola Tesla, which would probably explain all the 3's
I wish Jack would go back to the Dead Leaves sound, just pure deep south rock
read the video description before saying something stupid.
Playable etched isn't new, i have a split enz album that is already, wankers but still dope shit.
Im new to vinyl records....and ive heard people talking about Record Store Day. Thing is...I dont know what it means? What is record store day?
i live on the coast
Will there be another record day
happens every year man
how many copies of the liquid filled record will be made? , i want to get one of those, can i get it by amazon?
What's the song at the end?
Who is the balloon guys busy texting?
4:05
What's the name of the song in the end?
shoulda shot this on 16mm
WHAT ABOUT CHOCOLATE MILK HAHAH
Heh, I'm not hating look at my other comments. Don't just look at the surface level. Dig deeper. I'm talking about music too. Here I'll quote myself from other comments:
"Either way I'm being nit picky its cool they are doing something different."
"This is something great that you can experience now. I'm all for a revival of recording technology from days past."
I'm not trying to be cool man. Cool doesn't factor. No one thinks I'm cool liking an 80's New Wave band from New Zealand.
Where can I buy that liquid-filled vinyl?
Playable etching. So... a record?
Someone from Australia should know that they needn't travel that far for cheap gimmicks. Split Enz (from New Zealand) released a playable etched record in 1980.
you know it's easy to fix, right? and there's supposed to be a warning or something.
WRONG.zz top eliminator was an etched dish.tire tracks
Jack u r cute
WHAT ABOUT CHOCOLATE MILK
good question
a fine question actualy
