    BTS itself is a genre, with over 300+ songs you really can't pigeonhole them into one genre.

  • @avahasson6921
    @avahasson6921 2 года назад +547

    Kpop isn't necessarily a genre, it's an industry.
    BTS can't really be defined by one single genre (although their roots are in hip hop) They do everything from rap, to latin pop, to EDM, to R&B, to pop, to rock. They're the whole package with immeasurable talent. All of them are producers/songwriters as well as versatile dancers yet they each bring something unique to the team. I really recommend delving deeper into the BTS rabbit hole because this is just the tip of the iceberg.

    Simply put, Kpop is a category not a genre. Bts has songs of almost every musical genre (I’m not saying that this ONLY applies to BTS as I am fully aware about other “kpop” groups who do this too); hence, I wouldn’t categorise them as “pop singers”. Also wanted to add that most of their songs are actually quite insightful and deep. As you said, each member has their own palette and uniqueness and you can hear and see this essence of individuality through their music and in ANYTHING that they do in general to be honest. The more one looks into BTS the more appealing they get; Not just from a musical perspective but in general. Bts, in my opinion, is THE kpop group that paved the way for the “kpop industry”.

    I love the feeling when someone finally gets it. And I hate all those empty comments around me hating on BTS without knowing anything about them or their music. It´s insulting. They are not just some boyband, they are musicians, artists, original, quirky, creative, they write their own songs most of the time, they play instruments, they are great lyricists! And on top of that they are great humans, they have cool fashion style, just inspirational all over.

    • @aquariusmarika
      @aquariusmarika 2 года назад +14

      And to reply to some of your questions. I got into BTS through my love for korean language (usually it´s the other way round, I know :) ) which I developed through k-drama and now I study the language, I also study asian studies - international relations at the Metropolitan University in Prague. I fell in love with them very quickly as I looooove music and they have huge repertoire, I never get bored with them. I am OT7 which means I love all 7 members but I have to admit I have a soft spot for Jimin (the blond boy with high voice), he is my bias. And my biggest bias wrecker is probably Suga (the rapper with the fastest cadence). They are totally opposite on the spectrum of personalities and music as well. LOL (but Jimin can be tough and Suga can be soft - it´s complicated :D)

    • @GudetamaSit
      @GudetamaSit 2 года назад +10

      Really summed that up. If you've given them a shot and they're not your thing that's fine. Just pretty annoying when they're just written off as some 'little Asian boyband who only are popular because of their looks'. At least give them a shot and try listening to something other than their most played songs.
      Seeing new reactors come in with an open mind but still getting surprised is always a treat :)

    BTS roots are in hip-hop as the first couple members came from the underground rap scene before the rest of the members joined, and then debuted together. They incorporate/blend R&B, pop/edm, and other genres such as rock, jazz, Latin, etc. At this point, BTS is really their own genre and you’ll understand the more songs you listen to. Almost no skippable songs in their discography, they don’t half-*ss their songs as they pour themselves into the meaning in their lyrics which are way more deep than what banger/catchiness or even song title suggests. They just do all their music well and not only that, you can probably tell how they are like best friends here. No egos where they think they’re better than each other, that one would want to leave a group like past bands/groups. They truly love doing and performing music together. I got into them because their music remind me of music I grew up with the mix of hip-hop, R&B, etc. Like it feels so good, because it really has the spirit of it and still also be fresh. I’m from LA, just so you know, because some people assume only Koreans listen to them because they are Korean. You should always check if the captions which would have the english translation/subtitles entered in the video. Ignore/turn off captions if it says “English (auto-generated)” because that’s not accurate, because it’s just RUclips software or something.

    BTS is the total package!.. Vocals, raps, over 300 songs of multiple genre, professional level of dancing and performance, visuals and aesthetics. They have it all…. they always strive to give the full experience to their fans and audience.. But what really drew me into them as a 41 yo fan is their LYRICS, they always have something to say that relates to a lot of people.. Mostly tackles on mental health, fair representation, socioeconomic issues, gender empowerment and many more… They are socially aware, they may not be perfect but they do their best to better people and role models.. They’re so humble and funny that you can’t help but adore them..
    Those are the few reasons why their fandom spans across generations, cultures and genders.. They are very inclusive.. Over 60% of ARMYS (fandom name) ranges from 20-80 yo, coming from all walks of life, profession, gender and nationality… and most importantly for the past 10 yrs or so, all members are heavily involved with their music as either songwriters/producers.. esp the rappers with each over a hundred song credits in their names..
    Btw pls turn on CC (close caption).. you will appreciate their music more with their thoughtful, deep lyrics..

    I discovered them while playing beat saber in vr. at first all I knew about K-pop was the word K-pop lol then I watched 1 video of bts and an other and I kept going! I liked the beats but when I translated the lyrics everything was even better. then watching all of their other stuff made me connect with them even more and now I regret having pushed away K-pop for so long just because I didn't want to listen to something that was so "popular because they look good"... oh well.. I'm a guy and I fucking love theses guys lol They are great and I was just afraid to try something I didn't know, but now I'm proud of being on this journey, watching them change the world and bring people together with the power of love and respect. on this note I'll wish you a great day everyone :)

  • @JoobieLoobieSoobie
    @JoobieLoobieSoobie 2 года назад +236

    Welcome to our world!!! A few things:
    You can turn on the closed captions for almost all K-pop for lyric translations
    As long as you play the label's intro, you can usually react to official music videos without worrying about copyright strikes. This includes groups in the same label 'family' as BTS: TXT, Seventeen, Enhypen, Les Sserafim and others.
    However, BTS are a category unto themselves.
    BTS started as a hip-hop group, so the rappers are the real deal who write their own bars.
    K-pop is a broad category that contains many genres. But what they do have in common as "K-pop" is the integration of music, visuals, fashion, style, and choreography, and the amount of effort that goes into live performance.
    This performance is tame compared to most BTS performances. As you learn and see more you will be blown away. I recommend you watch the MVs called "ON: Kinetic Manifesto" and "Black Swan" for some pretty diverse music and incredible choreography. And remember to turn on CC! I also recommend the most recent taped live performance video called "Proof Live." There are two songs followed by a discussion that you could probably skip for now. Just fast forward to the 21 minute mark for the third song. This one doesn't include any choreography but really highlights their musical talent. I think you will continue to be more and more impressed!
    You picked a great time to start learning because they are about to start launching solo albums. That means the next few months will be filled with seven times the amount of content they usually put out, which was already A LOT. The first solo album from rapper J-Hope drops in a couple weeks, and he's headlining at Lollapalooza at the end of July. You better catch up fast!
    The guide to BTS by Taylor Nakamoto is a good resource to learn more about the members individually. Fans WILL watch you react to it even though it's pretty long.

    Great reaction:)
    BTS have been on stage since 2013, their journey is actually amazing. They went literally from zero to the most popular band in the world . Kpop world is very strict, competitive and harsh, yet BTS somehow overcame the entire system and made their own way to the top. I think they distinguished themselves from other groups with their honest, deep lyrics, talking about topics such as self love, mental health, society issues etc. They have also always contributed in writing and/or producing their music (especially the rappers), which made it more relatable. They have also great chemistry as a group. You can just see they are best friends and not just some random people that have to work together. They have been together for over a decade now and they themselves said they treat each other like family at this point. They literally grew together.
    They all have different backgrounds and different abilities: there are dancers, vocalists with very distinctive vocals, rappers with different styles (2 of them coming from underground rap scene), producers, writers. They are one of the most popular and best selling artist in the world right now, they have broken many world records, won multiple awards (such as Billboard or Artist of the Year at AMAs), they have been nominated for Grammys (twice), they sell out stadiums in minutes, they have even been invited to White House recently.
    And it may sound cliché, but they really seem like very genuine, good and fun people. We could get to know them through interviews, speeches, their vlogs, live transmissions, their reality shows etc, again - since 2013! When this all started, the youngest was literally starting highschool. I still remember them talking about their hopes and dreams and laughing it off (like winning Billboard hot 100, Grammy nomination) and now they have accomplished all that and more. It's just amazing, especially if you followed them for a few years. But it's always a good time to start :D
    I recommend Introduction by Taylor Nakamoto

The majority of BTS fans became fans because of their lyrics, what they represent and how they communicate with fans sharing feelings and how they comfort us. Except few songs just for fun and cheer people up, the most of their songs have deep meanings behind catchy melodies.

    K-pop actually stands for "Korean Popular music". It's definitely been stuck into a box in the US. Aside from that though, BTS is totally outside of the realm of K-pop now. Compared to other idol groups their musical diversity is insane, and is leaps and bounds above the rest. They've tried SO many genres. They write, compose, and produce a lot of their songs. The 3 rappers also have released their own solo "mixtapes", and all 7 have solo songs they've worked on outside of the group 🙂

    As some people explained, Kpop is not a genre, it's the name of the industry which involves the Kpop companies and their groups. It's like a package, it includes not only the music (that is not necessarily pop, you can find a lot of different genres by Kpop groups), but also the rapping, visuals, choreography, production... Kpop groups usually have rappers and vocalists. Enjoy your BTS journey, they're incredible artists =D

    They only have 3 fully English songs which are total bops but don't quite encompass the magic of BTS. They are pure art. You come for catchy tune, but it's in Korean. Then you look up the lyrics and get blown away. They are inspiring, uplifting and introspective. Then you want to know their names, and bam! Next thing you know, you are deep down BTS rabbit hole and in love with their personalities and their music. Honestly, I am 41 and never felt such passion for supporting an artist. I checked out BTS through another kpop group and never looked back. They started in kpop but they outgrew it. Now it's something uniquely them. Enjoy the ride, that's all I can say. 💜🔥💪

    "I was not expecting that" is the anthem for all new listeners when they first discover a BTS song LOl ! Welcome on bard. They are far from a typical "boy's band" as in the western industry, and nor are they typical Kpop Idol . They are differents since day one with their hip hop roots and rebelious lyrics (BTS achievments is the most incredible underdog success story of the whole music industry history) , and 9 years after, they are still very different and unique. They don't stick to a particular genre of music, but all their discography threw years is ike a testimony of their growth, hope, fears and failures. Yes, their music is catchy, their visuals are perfect and their choregraphy are insane, but the 7 guys personnality, their sincerity and the deep meanings of the lyrics is what has built the fandom as diverse and big as it is. So yes, we read substitles in our own language, or in english, to understand the lyrics, because it's important.To answering your question, I have never heard about Kpop before knowing BTS ( I'm 58 years old , génération of Queen, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, etc) . So BTS leads me in Kpop, and I listen to some other groups or soloists that I enjoy now, but for me, no one can be compared to BTS. I hope you will discover more of their songs, and don't forget to turn the caption on. Greating from France.

    I loved your reaction to BTS. Thank you. I became a fan when I discovered BTS last January. I have not listened to any contemporary music since I was in high school in the 60s (yes, i just turned 70!). My bias is Jimin--dancing and singing. He is the main dancer. As a middle schooler, he beat out a dance instructor with his popping and break dancing. He began training in Japanese sword-martial arts in elementary school and achieved the highest level. He has a black belt in Taekwondo and has has training in 2 other martial arts. He was accepted into a special high school for the arts where he studied ballet, jazz and modern dancing. He had the shortest training of any K-Pop idol--one year. He practiced after everyone else left while attending high school, getting 2 hours of sleep a night. He was president of his class for 9 years, elementary to HS. He is known to be very empathetic and kind by his 6 BTS brothers, often noticing when they are down--He runs over ro them, even on stage, hugging them and consoling them. And his voice--like an angel and he also has that sezy grind he can add. I suggest the videos about his dance, martial arts ability, and his voice. By the way, ALL BTS members have an earned bachelor's degree and Jin has a masters.
    MY SUGGESTIONS (my favorites): ON-Kinetic Manifesto, Mic Drop, Fire, and Black Swan music videos.
    Live shows, I suggest the Melon Music Awards (MMA 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. MMA is considered even by professionals as the best live performance in the history of music. I can't wait for you to see them!
    But the most important to listen to is the video of their UN appearance when the leader, RM, gave a speech. Because of the power of BTS Love Yourself album, which was about their own struggles due to so many people hating them when the first began, the UN created a program with BTS and UNICEF to combat violence in children. BTS donated 1 million and the proceeds of the Love Yourself album to the program. This is long. Sorry. But every new thing I find out about them blows me away! Thank you again for your reaction to BTS. 💜

    Not into Kpop - but accidentally saw BTS on RUclips (ON at the grand central station) - was super impressed, looked for other videos, every single one was amazing, and just started listening solely to their songs for the last 2 years. They also have their own variety show (they made their own because variety shows in Korea won’t invite them or will make fools of them because they were from a small powerless agency) which is very funny. Love their travel series too. So, still not into Kpop, but a die hard BTS fan. In my 40s. My bias is Jimin and JK, but I love every single one of them. Each one has amazing talent, fantastic personality, and humbling attitudes.

    First off, I am a 55 year old woman who has been into Kpop and Jpop since the 1990s but then in 2013 these guys were different, they were raw, their music was fresh and their lyrics not at all what KPop was at that time. With BTS my fave music genre went main stream at last :) That is how long I had to wait ;)
    Originally (and still for most fan aka ARMY) BTS is short for the Korean *BangTan Sonyeondan* which translates to Bulletproof Boy(Scouts). The three rappers are the main songwriters, music writers and producers for the group, but ALL 7 write songs and produce these.
    Their English songs are very generic pop songs (not fully written by themselves and we all notice that) but their Korean and Japanese stuff?! HOLY MOLY!!! They touch on mental health, anxiety, social and political injustices, psychological themes, self love etc. All things KPop artists usually leave their hands off because it could break their career. But these guys from a once very small company have taken risks every step of the way during their 9 year career since debut. These guys have been together since 2010 and 2011 respectively, lived in a two bedroom apartment (one bedroom for their manager and the other one where all 7 members slept in) and they have been not only shown their own industry you don't need to come from big influential companies to make it, but also the world.
    I would recommend some of their official MVs, like Black Swan, ON (both the kinetic manifesto which is a dance vid and the other is more a lithtle movie); Mic Drop the Steve Aoki remix, etc. Also note click the CC, almost all MVs have English subs because their lyrics are beautiful - even in the worst translation. Very lyrical, very metaphoric.
    Oh and watch one of the fan made (but very professionally done) intros/docus to BTS; Rise of Bangtan; An introduction to the 7 members of BTS (2021 update) and also one of the most recent ones A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7.

    I'm a massive K-pop fan, and I got into K-pop from watching Kdramas, which, as a writer, I'm super impressed with. The writing is just so good. The whole philosophy of writing a series with just sixteen episodes gives you a way to write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and ending, which isn't how the US does television. It's completely refreshing. Anyway, thank you for reacting to BTS. I'd love to see you react to Stray Kids, God's Menu, or Maniac. Their music is just so different from anything out there, while still being hip-hop/pop. I can't really explain it, you just have to listen to them. And their videos are amazing. Anyway, thanks for the reaction. Loved it.

I heard dynamite in the car several times and loved it and needed to know more, especially who had the angel voice. Within 24hrs I had devoured so much and loved everything I heard. Jimin is my bias, also he is the angel voice lol. You haven't seen them "perform" yet, they are so damn amazing live. I am a traditionalist if they can't perform live I'm not interested. I’m not into kpop I just love BTS for their music, their talent in singing rapping performing composing producing. They’re also extremely genuine and completely in synergy with each other nobody trying to get in the center they all hype each other and the fact they enjoy their own song and can’t stop vibing to them is what attracted me to BTS and BTS only. Also the story telling and lore of their Music videos all through video games, books and even manga, you have to catch up references, collect the pieces you might find during a video playing during their concert, during that ONE award show, during a freaking teasers. You have to do a lot of reading from Karl Jung to Coelho and everything in between, know arts, and try to fill little by little the puzzle. Reading the lyrics but also koreans explaining the lyrics and documentaries (the italian explanation video for Spring Day made me actually cry for days)
    The guys are also genuinely hilarious their tvshow makes me cry laugh, their documentaries are awesome but their reaction to their own MV and documentaries makes it funnier.
    By the way no kpop and seldom rap for me but I listen to every kind of music.

    So glad to see you react to BTS! Apologies for the long comment ahead:
    I won't repeat details for the comments regarding K-pop being an industry, not a genre, and BTS having an incredibly large & diverse discography, but I will add to it!
    -BTS have been around for a long time now (they just turned 9 about 2 weeks ago) and they have a very typical "underdog" story in terms of succeeding against practically all odds (being from an originally very small label in a time period where groups not from one of the three most major labels in South Korea were virtually never successful in the country, and a minority group speaking a foreign language succeeding at an international level, amongst other things)
    -They are very well known for having very meaningful lyrics and being pretty involved in their musical creation process. The three rappers almost always write their own verses (and there are rap verses from all three in the grand majority of their songs) and the vocal line have all also contributed many times both in BTS songs and in solo work of their own (of which all 7 members have)
    -There is a LOT. of BTS content out there. It will probably feel overwhelming at first seeing not only their hundreds of songs but also what is likely thousands of hours of personality content - from their own variety show called Run BTS, to livestreams, to shows following them on vacations, to documentaries, and so much more. You will probably have people requesting just about anything they've ever done - you're welcome to take it at any pace!
    -For introductions, I recommend the "A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7" by Taylor Nakamoto (an about 50 minute intro) and the much longer but spectacular fanmade documentary series "Rise of Bangtan" as well as "This is BTS" by XCeleste (about 15 minutes but slightly outdated - still good though) Don't worry about the length - ARMY will 100% watch the full videos with you. We love seeing people get introduced to the members!

    Okay to answer some of your questions:
    I knew vaguely of kpop, but bts definitely got me into it (even though they're the only "kpop" artists I regularly listen to. I do not have a favorite. They all have their unique talents and I cannot choose. I know the general message of each song though I may not know every individual word. For the songs that are in my everyday rotation, when I hear the Korean lyrics, I can mentally see the English translations of the words (if that makes sense 😅). We stress the importance of reading the lyrics/translations of the songs.

    Kpop is more of an industry, not a music genre, where it involves much more than just singing, but also choreography, rapping, amazing performances, and much more.
    BTS was formed in 2013 and has 4 vocalists and 3 rappers. Kpop existed before them, and there are many other talented groups, but BTS is the most popular group that kpop has ever had, currently the biggest even outside of kpop, they have attracted a lot of people to kpop

    Bts is way above the typical boybands.
    They write, compose and co produce their songs since debut. They have 2 underground rappers RM Suga, best rapline (RM, Suga Jhope), and one of the best vocal lines (huge range and stability).
    They have 3 subunits- Vocal Line, Rapline, Dance line.
    They all have solo songs since 2016(3 years after debut)
