Hands down, I mean fingers down a second mortgage for the $84,000. Quality obvious, is solid with more volume. It is a treasure with the gold. So beautiful! You will be heard, and noticed!!!

I was surprised by how much the expensive flute made me feel compared to the cheaper one. It's definitely obvious that your skill has more effect on the sound of the flute but the expensive one was noticeably more expressive. It really made me think because I started off with a ~£400 Trevor James flute and got my >£1000 pearl flute as an intermediate player. I love that flute and still have and play it all the time but, as more of a casual player these days, I do sometimes feel the pressure of having a higher quality instrument because there's just so much more you can do with it. It was very apparent in the Carmen Fantasy. So that's what $84,000 sounds like :) (196* student Artley w/B foot). When I was a student in the '70's, Gemeinhart was drool worthy among my sister and her flutist friends. Since I didn't start playing it until late 70's, my used Artley was enough. Been thinking of an Amazon Yamaha, but now I see the Gemeinhart is same price from Flute Center. Great video and thanks for the hard work! Best Regards/Wishes!

I like the flute part in the song Magic Journeys which was the theme song from a 3D movie that used to be at EPCOT Imaginations Pavilion. The 3D movie was called Magic Journey. Back in the 80's.
True story , back in the 80’s a friend of mine bought a secondhand flute in NY, for about $200, turned out it was platinum. It was stolen at a gig before he managed to insure it.
Beautiful playing Katie, love the sounds of both. The Gemeinhardt in the right hands is probably capable of doing most things. But as an amateur flautist, there is always that desire to want to get the next one up. The better one, and eventually one develops sense and stops when the collection has no place in the showcase cabinet. Love the channel. Love the playing, and the tone is superb. Even on the expensive one.
My first flute was a Trevor James, from All Flutes Plus in Warren Street, London, which was great for learning on, and cost about £150 back in the '80s. My flute teacher recommended that I get an upgrade and I paid about £600 for a Boosey and Hawkes. The difference was remarkable, once I'd trained myself on it. Apparently the difference in tone gave me two music grades more. I was going for grade 7 but a divorce got in the way. Got grade 5 with merit and theory grade 5 distinction and was well on my way. Hey ho, things and life happen. After all this rambling, the point is that the inexpensive learner flutes are good for just that, but to get the tone and power, you have to shell out more money. Perhaps not as much as, £70,000 though. This video makes this case pretty well, and thanks for filming it, Katie.

I'm 48 years old and I did go to music college - I did not finish but I kept playing and eventually became a rock flutist - yes, really! But this video makes me happy, because I started in the 80s on a $300 nickel plated Gemignhardt and now I have a handmade 900 series Yamaha with a Prima Sankyo head joint - so seeing the flute levels reminds me of progressing through playing levels. I am sure there are lots of Haynes and other makers of platinum flutes that have several artists on them.
Platinum requires a strong and open blowing style to really make it sing. Switching to a platinum head took a while but transformed my playing. Fun video!
I've seen the Haynes platinum on FCNY's website and I saw the price which caught my eye on it, and I kinda wondered how it sounded. This flute is extremely beautiful. I got a Gemeinhardt 3B for an intermediate flute. I actually bought it new off of eBay (sounds bad I know) but it was a newer model that was made in China. My local brass and woodwind repair shop said that was the first Gemeinhardt flute that was made in China and has a beautiful sound to it because when some of his customers talked about it they did say that the quality of the instrument would go down. My father did pay $300-400 on it. Not bad, and yes Gemeinhardt did move their factories to China.
I play the clarinet now. Have been playing since 6th and am about to be a senior. I want to learn flute and if I started at that gemeindhart, that wouldn't be so bad. I think I prefer open hole though since I am used to clarinet's open holes.

@@katieflute I got a bright blue Nuvo nearly 5 years ago just because I was intrigued. I have to admit I was surprised at how good it sounds. Of course I have to work quite a bit harder to get that good sound than on my 1970 Armstrong Heritage.... Anyway, it's a great casual, knock-around traveling flute and I have no fear of what might happen to it if I accidentally drop it in a creek or something.
Would like to see a double tonguing video about how the tone and articulation change when you do different things like tongue near front of mouth vs back, blowing too hard, how the tonguing changes w the air in high vs low notes
Video suggestion: How to get a clear sound on piccolo! I’ve been struggling transferring my flute chops to piccolo especially in the piccolos low range.
incredible how much fuller the tone and volume 83,500 can do to a flute. :) nice work. nice perspective. I am feeling better about my Emerson open hole.
Thanks for sharing. I was really curious about the platinum! I will never hope to ever own one but it was great to hear & gracious of FC to loan it out to you.
Yeah - there were no flies on the Gemeinhart - it played great. What I noticed about the platinum flute was an increased level of overall sound power and sonority, but the tone quality got a bit brash, brassy and overblown at times. Of course, I don't know how heavy it was, or how difficult it was to hold up - I have to take your word on that.
I also play on a Platinum Wm. S. Haynes Flute , with a 14 K Rose Gold mechanism , B footjoint , offset G keys , C Sharp Trill Key , and it is completely hand engraved , so it is a far different Flute from my first instrument , which was a nickel-plated , closed hole , C footjoint BUNDY Flute !!! However , I still own and love my chilhood Flute , which I still occasionally play !!! The Haynes is just a little bit more fancy than my BUNDY Flute !!!! And , I just love to watch all your Flute videos , they are awesome !!!
Well I've just purchased the Gemeinhardt ,and I really love it.Easy to play ,nice sound.Of course the Haynes is ...the best flute money can buy ,and there is a big sound difference. But still ,Gemeinhardt's sound is good and satisfying.
I bought a Gemeinhardt flute in 1973. It had open holes, an offset G, a B foot, and a silver head joint. I paid $300 for it. And it came in that exact same case.
wow, never heard a platinum flute played! Very interesting! The tone color of the two were obviously different, and the platinum definitely is definitely more flexible.
I love your vidoes sooooo much im 12 and ive been practicing cecile chaminade concertino and ive been so inspired by your video of you playing it its such a beutiful song and you did such a great job
Definitely worth the price if you got the money, or use for it. It would be better to make a video explaining the difference in sound according to the material the flute is made of. It's also interesting to demonstrate and explain in details what things influence on the sound of a flute, but that is a lot more difficult. Demonstrations with headjoints are also interesting.
I am not a musician but definitely appreciate your talent and channel. As an electrical engineer I would do the engineering thing and compare both using a DAW and a spectrum analyser analysis. I do not not if that is you forte, but I would be interesting. Very interesting no matter what. Cheers from Canada.
What you need is a decent decibel meter perhaps mounted on the wall in back of you. I happen to have very good speakers so I could really hear the dynamic range difference but otherwise it would be hard
You can make any flute sound amazing! Seriously though, I thought the point of a platinum flute was that it was lighter and then they added all that gold to the mechanism which apparently made it heavier. It is a beautiful flute though!

hearing carmen on the gemeinhardt was surreal - i had the same model for years and played carmen on it and damn you made that thing rock it. i went back and played it now, (i have a powell signature) and i could definitely make it sound better than i could on the gemeinhardt, but you made the gemeinhardt sound better than i can on my powell! we STAN a tone quality LEGEND
One of the only things I regret about being a singer is I don't get to nerd out over instruments
Proof that you can have a cheap instrument and still sound great! Sometimes its not always the instrument
The platinum flute sounds much warmer and golden :0 I love it it
I been playing flute for 3 years. Right now I'm in middle school marching band right now we're on concert season a your really inspiring.
I scrolled down into the comments and could immediately tell the difference in what flute you were playing. The tone to the more expensive one is so much nicer.
I’ve recently found your channel, and oh my goodness I love it!! I love the flute and am playing it in high school for concert band. I would really like to purchase one so videos like these are so helpful. Thank you for creating amazing content💖💖💖
Belleloves Gaming ahhh thank you so much for your support! 💖🙏🏻 Let me know which flute you pick if you get a new one! 😊 Best of luck in concert band! ✨
8:21 don't worry you're not the only one I did that in my grade 6 vocal exam lmao
Gemmeinhardt 2SP was the first flûte I played 30 years ago. I liked her. Now I play an Altus 907.
The 84000 flute sounds so much better. Fuller... more colors. Loved it!
I'm a violinist, and just learning to play a cheap beginner flute. I could definitely hear a difference in the two! The Haynes definitely has a richer tone, but they both sound great in your capable hands!
Omg the difference was astounding. I’d like to hear that one vs one around $3000
I remember in 2006 i bought my Trevor James Privilege II flute for like 200$ and thought "holy crap, that's an expensive flute".
Me: okay, I’ve been playing flute for 7 years now, I think I’m safe to say I’m pretty good at it
9:19 : I’m about to end this man’s whole career
To be honest I’d reallly reallllllly love to see you test the Nuvo plastic flutes I don’t know if I should by one
Lamin Hablützel I’ve wanted to try those!
I have one. They are fun.
katieflute omg please!!!
You should do a video where you try different instruments for the first time!
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!
Like different flutes? Or different completely different instruments?
@@katieflute I think he meant different instruments :D
@@katieflute Yes, completely different instruments! (:
@@hannahhh7210 I have a video like that coming up! :D Not with multiple instruments, but one completely different instrument from the flute hehe
I have an old Gemeinhardt and it still works beautifully. But the other one worked better than what I got
incredible how much fuller the tone and volume 83,500 can do to a flute.
RUclips must pay better than I thought.
The flute sounded incredible, and looked like a pleasure to play.
SO GERAT THE COMPARATION... YOU RIGHT... THIS VIDEO IS OUTSTADING.... ESPLENDED... COMGRATULATION KATIE.
I'd love to hear a blind test between an expensive and not so expensive flute.
wow, never heard a platinum flute played! Very interesting! The tone color of the two were obviously different, and the platinum definitely is definitely more flexible.
Before I saw your eBay flute,I had already ordered one for my band class I got it today and it’s really cool
I watched so many Katieflute videos and so far my favorite part of them all is "flute content"
The Gemeinhardt model is the one I started out with in 1974 (actually a now discontinued model)
That was fun to watch! :)
Maybe you could show (and play) us some of your favourite pieces. I'm always looking for new pieces to play :)
I love your vidoes sooooo much im 12 and ive been practicing cecile chaminade concertino and ive been so inspired by your video of you playing it its such a beutiful song and you did such a great job
thank you so much, Kiara! 💖Good luck with the Chaminade :) It's such a fun piece to play!
Wowzer what a beast the Haynes is! Sounds absolutely phenomenal when you play it. ❤️
Omg. Fantastic. I hope I get to own one of those fancy flutes. Oh my love.
I think the weight help put a solid sound projection forth.
😍😍😍 wow, just wow, would literally do anything to play even a single song on the platinum Haynes flute😍😍😍
it's pretttttty amazing :D
I am not a musician but definitely appreciate your talent and channel. As an electrical engineer I would do the engineering thing and compare both using a DAW and a spectrum analyser analysis. I do not not if that is you forte, but I would be interesting. Very interesting no matter what. Cheers from Canada.
What you need is a decent decibel meter perhaps mounted on the wall in back of you. I happen to have very good speakers so I could really hear the dynamic range difference but otherwise it would be hard
You can buy 4 cars with that flute....
I love the Gemeinhardt; I wish you had also played a gold Haynes, a silver one, and then some Powell flutes.
You can make any flute sound amazing! Seriously though, I thought the point of a platinum flute was that it was lighter and then they added all that gold to the mechanism which apparently made it heavier. It is a beautiful flute though!
