  • The Hubble Space Telescope has made amazing astronomical discoveries for 23 years. It still has a good number of years left, but without the Space Shuttle, servicing missions are no longer possible. The natural question is "what's next?"
    "Hubble's Universe Unfiltered" is a recurring broadcast from HubbleSite.org, online home of the Hubble Space Telescope. Astrophysicist Frank Summers takes viewers on an in-depth tour of the latest Hubble discoveries. Find more episodes at hubblesite.org/...

    I agree. I always want to use Celsius in these presentations, but I force myself to use the familiar units for the non-science public. I prefer using both in my written works, so that I can be true to the spirit of science, but still acknowledge reality.

    Distant galaxies are redshifted by the expansion of the universe. They have a small doppler shift due to their physical motions, but almost all of the measured shift is from the expansion of space while the light traverses from there to here.

    Not yet. There are many promising targets already, and more will be uncovered in the years before launch. The very first targets will be tests, like star fields to measure the clarity and resolution. The first group of science targets will be selected in the months before launch.

    Yup. Good catch. I try to avoid that phrasing, but since I work without a script or teleprompter, it sometimes slips out.

    I remember when Hubble was launched. It had a problem with it's mirror that distorted the image. Once it was replaced it worked beautifully! Glad to see it's still working after all these years. Can't wait to see what Webb has in store for us.

    After all the wonderful images Hubble has produced for us over the last 30 years, is sad to know that when its mission is over they will destroy or just leave it to wonder around orbit and its painful to see such a history piece to be disposed that way. They should bring it home to a museum where it belongs.

I've been interested in astronomy for a long time now, but I'm more of a visual learner, and the visuals and the way it was explained blew my mind. I especially loved the fact that the possibility of life on other planets was mentioned, and the unfolding telescope was pretty cool too!

    Does Hubble only look far out in just 1 area?
    Why did it "happen" to point towards the center towards the BIG BANG?

    • @bertpasquale5616
      @bertpasquale5616 5 лет назад

      Andrew, this is going to freak you out... the Big Bang is in ALL directions! We are in a sense “inside” the Big Bang. HST can point anywhere in the annual cycle. And anywhere it does, is sees to a certain point in the past. Fun fact: The Deep Field image location was chosen because it was one of the “blankest” areas in the sky - and Hubble saw 10,000 galaxies there. Astronomy rewritten in one image. Hubble gotchu!

    Why dont we build 100 of these and have them looking in many different directions? Compared to our military budget of 700 billion a year these are cheap at a little over a billion. Also if we built them by the 100's then the cost would come down considerably. Its always more expensive to build one of a kind items.
