  • A behind the scenes look at producing a scientific visualization of the famous Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula.
    The AstroViz Project of NASA's Universe of Learning is creating an exploration into the iconic Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula. This production reel provides a peek into the underlying science, the 2D image processing, and the development of 3D volumetric models of these star-forming wonders using visible and infrared data from the Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes.
    Visualization Team: Greg Bacon, Ralf Crawford, Joseph DePasquale, Leah Hustak, Danielle Kirshenblat, Joseph Olmsted, Alyssa Pagan, Frank Summers (STScI), Robert Hurt (Caltech/IPAC)

    How do we know what the rear of the pillars is if we can only see them from the front?

    • @hubblespacetelescope
      @hubblespacetelescope  6 месяцев назад +9

      We have some indications of what the back of the pillars look like because the infrared emission seen by Webb sometimes comes from the back side - parts of the pillars are somewhat transparent to the longer wavelengths of infrared light. In other cases, we use scientific extrapolation/intuition and artistic license.

    If these images were taken so many years appart why are the patterns in the nebular identical? Surely it would've changed shape over the years?

    • @SuperNova-py1ec
      @SuperNova-py1ec 6 месяцев назад +3

      Good question. I think they are so large that the changes are not noticeable at that scale. I know Hubble has been able to image changes in some objects but they may have been at different scales.

    • @TabooGroundhog
      @TabooGroundhog 6 месяцев назад +3

      The pillars stretch about 5 light-years and with the image from Hubble being 7000 pixels that’s about 4 billion miles per pixel, more than our distance to Pluto. I think they could see small changes but not at the scale of the whole image.

    • @hubblespacetelescope
      @hubblespacetelescope  6 месяцев назад +7

      There are subtle changes between the 1994 Hubble image, the 2014 Hubble image, and the 2022 Webb image. But, by and large, the pillars (and most other astronomical objects) don't change appreciably on human time scales. As another poster noted, the length scales here are huge, and it takes a long time for changes to propogate across such distances.

    1:35 are they really that far apart from each other or is that to showcase each segment of the pillar. I always imagined them closely connected.

    • @hubblespacetelescope
      @hubblespacetelescope  6 месяцев назад +6

      We worked with an expert on the pillars. The science papers show that there are four separate pieces, as shown in the video. Our expert approved our visualization as being "scientifically reasonable". I'll note that we don't have perfect information, but this presentation is consistent with the current understanding.

      i am in no relation with the researchers, but allow me to speculate: you can assume that these are "educated guesses" based on the quality of the spectral information measured - simply put: estimating depth on color and sharpness for each captured "pixel". i am not fully aware of the capabilities of the measurement technology, but in theory, observations from different points on the orbit (around the sun) could allow for depth estimation (as in stereoscopy)

    That's because they are so large that any movement and growth are imperceptible at this distance and in
    only 30 years. When they look again in a thousand years, with telescopes a thousand times better, they'll see a slight change.
