Thanks for this video! I agree with what you said about those polyglot videos in general showing very broken Japanese. After learning Chinese, I started Japanese in 2015 and just began working in a Japanese office this year. It should only get better from here on out!

I'm learning Japanese and live in Japan. What I love so much about this video is that people love talking to her. I think that's the best advice I can give. Keep a smile on your face and be genuine.
Hardest thing at first (and I still have this problem just less so) is that you're going to make a lot of mistakes. I'm kind of a shy person. Don't worry about it. If you treat people with respect, they will return the favor.
Leveling up will feel like molasses too once you get better at the language, but all of a sudden you're going to have this feeling of "omg, I can actually hold conversations with people". Never give up. It's a great feeling.

I went to study abroad in Mexico City. While I was close to fluent, I was pretty uncomfortable when I first arrived because I had no one to practice with. But after just a few weeks, I was able to hold a normal conversation and I was thinking and even dreaming in Spanish since I was around it 24/7. Everyone I come in contact with and speak Spanish with now is always surprised at how well I speak because it sounds natural, not schoolbook stiff.

It's not just your Aussie/British accent it's the type of phrases and words you use in English that are really native, which is what separates the C2 from the C1 speakers (note C2 English speakers can still have a foreign accent as long as their pronounciation is flawless), nobody listening would think you spoke English as a second language though!

Only a single language native speaker can ever be truly fluent. It has been said, by who I can't remember, that children who are truly bilingual never have the same ability in either of those two languages as the single language speaker. So I completely understand where he is coming from. He is not trying to curry favour, it's just how he sees his ability in English. Even worse, if you spend too long living in another language you lose your English, no matter how native your English is. I worked with an English dude named John in Switzerland. His Schwyzertütsch was so good that when I told a local that John was an Engländer, he turned and listened to him for a minute and told me that "no, he comes from Bern, he speaks Bernertütsch". John turned to me one morning and asked me if I had seen his hand shoes, Handschuhe is of course the word in German for gloves, it does literally mean hand shoes. I knew exactly what he meant, so just answered in the negative.

She's also really judgmental about how other people learn regardless how well it works for them personally. If it's not the way _she_ did it, it's the wrong way, even if the end result is the same. I'm not a big fan of the attitude/rudeness she conveys, even if it's unintentional.

Polyglot as a term is annoying, multilingual not enough? Lol. They are cringey as hell. Speaking, like you, as if a Gatekeeper to other languages. The purpose of learning other languages is to communicate. If you are awkward as a person, it's not going to change with language. It also blows my mind that people think you CAN'T learn their language?
Having said all that Pearl is very good at languages. Like many Foreigners learning a language and culture to a level that takes natives 20 years, she does it in 4/5.
Is it Racism to be surprised that she can speak your language well. Slightly. If I judged someone's English, like, in an almost patronizing manner. How would you take that?
