    I came here to learn more about the history of the Snow White story. I love all the ways the original Snow White stories were written. They are all better then the one Disney is trying to release in 2024. I love the way you tell the stories as well. Keep up the good work!

    All I will be able to think of tonight is the fish in the locket. How big was the locket? How big was the fish? Was the locket suspiciously fish-shaped or did the fish have to contort into an oval or circle shape?
    Fairytales really are brilliant.

    Thank you so much for this interesting video, Jen!
    I grew up loving fairy tales and luckily having a grandmother who loves them too.
    Sadly (but somehow understandably) my mother never allowed me to read them when I was little because she thought they were too brutal for a little, sensitive person like me ;)... So I started reading them secretly. I got obsessed with them pretty quickly but as a kid I wasn’t interested in the ‘real’ stories behind them.
    So now as an adult I love your series and the greatest thing about it is translating all of it to my grandma (she’s German) and gushing about our favorite stories. It’s super interesting and brings us closer together.
    Thank you for giving us this opportunity ♥️
    PS.: My favorite fairy tale is ‘Dwarf Nose’ by Wilhelm Hauff, it would be wonderful if you could maybe make a video about it :)

    It’s so fun listening to you relate these old fairytale stories. There’s such a great balance of story and ridiculous goings on... and your commentary in between is just perfect. I find it hard to believe that people took them at all seriously. I also love that there are stories from all over the world that can be tied back to a common thread.

    This video made me happier than anything I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you.
    ETA: Please do seek out the film (I think made for British tv) called “Breaking the Code” with Derek Jacobi as Alan Turing. It was made around 1996, and contains some fascinating use of the Snow White story. Be aware that it’s heart-breaking, though.

    Wow, this was amazingly informative and at the same time very entertaining! I didn't know about all of these variants from all over the world - I guess tales of women's jealousy of other women as the cause of evil have always appealed to storytellers? And then the connection between beauty and inner "goodness" which defines all of the daughters/stepdaughters... so many uncomfortable themes here. And yet Snow White (at least the revised Grimm edition that I was told as a child) is one of my favourite tales.

    What a treat you are! Sitting here in California listening to rain in my redwoods, you are the princess of intrigue. I grew up 1980's and Saint Ronald Reagan cut all funding for our schools to teach about myths even the Greek Roman basics. So I am so grateful to hear nuance and story beyond Disney. Also I had a difficult mom and I think these stories are a good way to let kids know that happens. Mine used to yell at me with her French Cooking knife poised in the air next to my eye. Now mom is hopefully content sitting with me on the shelf in Grandma's teapot. So I can pour her out and put her on trees and tell her she is free. That may sound odd but every day I feed birds (occasional ones Pacific Coast Crested Stellar Jays will become friends and land on my hand, it just takes a peanut and consistency. Squirrels tons of animals visit my 2nd story balcony in the Woods near the ocean. Folks compare me to Snow white. Really. I always flinch about that. But I love animals and plants like you would people. Mom used to tell me as a little girl when she died she wanted me to put her on the Rhododendrons because they like acid. So maybe we are strange like these stories. Today is my Birthday so thanks. You remind me of Prof. Beard I enjoy her to. Its sad we grow up told not to study history and dismissed as minutia here. I think the rich experiences of life are in story and nature.

    I am most familiar with the German version they tell here. Where the queen brings several things like a poisoned comb and a corset that's supposed to suffocate her and in the end the apple. The dwarves always warn her to trust no one and don't let anyone into the house. Snow white is super naive and always says: A comb you say? Of course, you can come in to comb my hair. Even as a child that annoyed me! It also features the part where the servants drop the coffin and she comes back alive again. I also read somewhere that is was based on a princess who ran away from her mother, lived with children that worked in caves and was killed by poison. I also read that she was supposed to have yellow hair and that changed into black over the years.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  6 лет назад

      Hi Anja, the 1812 Grimm has the corset and the comb as well as the apple, I was just abbreviating to save time. As for the dropping of the coffin, that’s in the 1848 Grimm version :)

    Wow! Jen, I was just looking through books of collected stories to purchase for my sons. I got the Greek myths, action stores, adventure stories, and s’mores myths. I said to myself “No, no fairy tale collections. I don’t like fairy tales.” Then, your video popped up in my feed and I clicked. I have to say, I now have a new-found appreciation and interest in fairy tales! However, still no interest in the sterilized versions for kids. What is your favorite real collection of fairy tales? I think I’ll look into the Grimm or the early Grimm translation you mentioned. Thanks - great video. I’ll be watching your other fairy tale videos too!
