      @@finngrassietranscriptions5000 Boy, doesn't he... :-) I haven't heard this recording before, although I've been huge fan of Lyle's since his North Texas State days. I'm stunned, again, listening to this.... He never does anything gratuitously, but it's still just...dazzling. And this transcription work is almost as dazzling! How you made sense of some of that rubato feel stuff is beyond me (as is much of the rest!). Thanks so much for this amazing contribution to our conception of what he was doing and the possibility of expanding our own appreciation and playing.

    Man it's crazy! Thanks so much! Transcribing such a thing is such a hard job, appericaiate it a lot.
    He played in such a profound way. His colors of reharm and beautiful feel of the intro, and than becoming a jazz bibopish with a tiny flavour of even bluesey licks at moments, really it's best showing of the talent of this genius who left us so early. Good rest his soul!

    I usually don't like that Keith Jarrett, Brad mehldau floaty ECM sound, but this is truly just magnificent... he should have done more of his own thing and less with Metheny-- Harmonic genius

    • @finngrassietranscriptions5000
      @finngrassietranscriptions5000  2 года назад +3

      Isn't it just? His harmonic approach is so interesting and has great emotional depth (definitely strongly influenced by European classical music) - he makes a hackneyed jazz standard sound fresh! The placement of the Latin feel change is also very tasteful and impactful. Thanks for watching !

    Very cool transcription but some of your notational choices are highly questionable. 4/12 time signatures? Barline crossing tuplets?
    This kind of notation is not a good representation of the music. The pianist here is simply improvising in rubato time, they are not consciously and purposefully using all these esoteric rhythms in their playing. This notation makes the playing seem way more complex than it actually is.
    This is also a nightmare to read, and a disservice to anyone trying to get into playing jazz piano. A beginner who comes accross this video will think "Wow, I guess I'm gonna have to learn how to sight read 4/12 time signatures and barline crossing tuplets to get into jazz piano", which is very far from the truth.
    I would simply stick to 4/4 except where absolutely necessary, and I would never use x/12 time signatures or barline crossing tuplets. It doesn't matter if the played rhythm doesn't exactly match the notated rhythm, as long as the notes themselves are correct.

    • @finngrassietranscriptions5000
      @finngrassietranscriptions5000  5 месяцев назад

      Going back on it I would indeed simplify the notation of the intro... perhaps you can send me a simplified version regarding making sense of the rhythm. I was too exact in trying to convey in a literal sense the fluctuations in speed and so on...there is a logic to it but I would agree that a bit more of a practical approach would be more beneficial

    • @asukalangleysoryu6695
      @asukalangleysoryu6695 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@finngrassietranscriptions5000 Sorry if I sounded too critical in my previous comment, I want to say that you actually transcribing all of these rhythms literally must have taken quite a lot of effort and I respect that. And some of the ways you did that, like the afforementioned 4/12, are pretty novel and clever. I just don't think their use is approriate here.
