Good review! Yeah, Super Mario World is still a gold standard for 2D platformers more than thirty years later! It hits all the right notes and the controls are incredibly tight! The '90s was a great time for video games! Sonic 1 for the Genesis was released the same year and began the Great 16-bit Wars between Nintendo and Sega! 😄
I'm going to be honest. Super Mario World has a great soundtrack without a doubt. However, I believe that Koji Kondo's best work in this era of the Mario series is in Yoshi's Island. Edit: I always hated the fact that a lot of SNES games made jumping B and running/attacking Y. It's one of the reasons I prefer the GBA version of both mainline SNES Mario games.
I was a snoopy kid. I saw the system with SMW in a closet at my dad’s cousins house. I asked if I could borrow it. The cousin said he was saving it for when his kid got older. His kid was like 2. In my 8 or 9 year old mind I was all, “why leave something alone when it can be used”. I was able to at least play it there eventually. OH MAN. What a day. Then, had to sell my NES with all my great collection of game to get a Super NES of my own. Great sad memories. Peace!-)
The only complaint I have about Super Mario World is that the spin jump button isn't mapped to the right shoulder button. Luckily this was done in the game boy advance release.
not only the greatest 2d mario game but the greatest mario game ever and no other game in the series even comes close. also one of the greatest games of all time. a perfect 10/10
It's a fine game. But I like SMB3 more. It has more interesting ideas, and Yoshi makes the game to easy. And SMW felt always unfinished to me graphicwise and I don't like the repetitive boss fights and childish music and graphics. What I really like about SMW is the Exploringand finding the hidden passages. Only Flaw SMB3 had in my opinion: It was too huge of a game for a game without save feature.
I’d say the NSMB games tried to be more like SMB3 rather than the original. With SMW having some influence in U in the form of baby yoshi’s and some of the enemies
I enjoy Matt's chill tone of voice. It's very pragmatic and focused like the Gaming Historian, and clearly, he is enthusiastic about what he has to say because his research and articulation are on point. Not every essayist has to be loud, hyperactive and bombastic. However, his videos are literally 70% quieter than most other content on the platform.
@@MortonGoldthwait I mean I had headphones in so maybe that's why it sounded fun. I'm just saying it's hard to be hyped for a game from a guy who sounds like he's about to be put to sleep just talking about it. And I mean, he made some mistakes but whatever, he's new. Who cares. They were minor anyways like saying this was the last 2D console Mario or failing to mention the other change that happens when beat the special world. Probably should have brought up the blocks too as well as how the levels broadcast to the world which ones have secret exists. Or even just touching on the end of the stage bar and mini game. Just feels like a little more effort would have gone a long way.
Smb3 to SMW is a regression. Is a great game but yoshi slows the game down. 3 is more of a pure platformer and has the best mysterious energy and powerups. Cape is mid.
Still holds up thirty years later
33 👀! 😅
Give it to any child and he will fall in love with it

This along with Mega Man X are my most replayed games of all time. SMW I have on almost every device/system I own. It's just such a good game.
Throw Donkey Kong Country in there and I’m the same ha ha. I feel like I have all three games memorized. and yet, they’re still so replayable
Bowser takes 6 hits to beat
Better mic quality please
With the clear love pixel art gets, I'd like to see Nintendo go all in on another 100% sprite mario game

Yeah, Yoshi's Island has such an amazing soundtrack. It sounds like childhood lol

Great Video! But please speak louder. I was seven in 1991. 😅

I wonder what a SM WORLD remake would look like??
We literally just got a new 2D Mario game on a console so might wanna fact check
And you didn't mention the other thing after beating special world. You gotta include these things and speak with some enthusiasm if you wanna grow
14:40 it takes 6 hits to defeat Bowser, not 5.

cough cough Mario galaxy cough cough Mario odyssey cough cough Mario wonder

2:24 um...you never heard of Yoshi on the NES?
That game came out after Super Mario World

Reviews*. Unless the Review owns something, there is no apostrophe.
Excellent retrospective
Please increase the volume when you edit these.
The volume isn't the issue. It's the enthusiasm in his voice tbqh

Super Mario World is a timeless classic, over thirty years and this game still awesome like was when released!
This classic aged like fine wine!

I’m with ya on that. Love SMW to pieces but SMB3 is pure bliss and it is the golden standard for a 2D Mario game.
It's pronounced brothers. Bros. is an abbreviation for brothers.
You SW takes are terrible but your mario videos are ok
