my father used to tell me that George best was the best player ever set foot on a football court. Now i can see why. Pure football genius.
And he played in our proper ENGLISH 1st Division that was fast, hard, high quality, very physical and bone crunching tackles were the norm yet George was as brave as a Lion and was not afraid of the hard defenders of the time on truly awful, boggy, bumpy pitches. I am so glad that younger people can watch him on you tube and to see how fast and physical our 1st Division was then. A real man's game then but his skill was supreme. I saw him play LIVE too and he seemed even quicker and more skilful as he dodged the tackles. UK
he is just amazing. can you imagine how good he would of been on these modern pitches with new boots and stuff ?
lets not forget how defenders cant try and end your career like they tried to do with george most games back then lol
George had the most natural talent of anyone, what a shame his career went off the rails , but what memories he left us.

Watching this makes you realise George Best had everything. Pace, footwork, dribbling, unbelievable ball control where he could turn on a sixpence. Unreal.
My dad was lucky enough to see George Best live many times and he always said he was the best player he ever saw and I’m not surprised he truly was an absolutely brilliant footballer

George Best was a truly brilliant player, Pelé even said that best was the greatest of all time. The modern game is so different so all you can really say is that George best was the best player in the world at his time just as Messi is now.

Not sure I agree he’s the best to have ever played the game- I have a suggestion, “mágico González”- Cádiz- to me, he was the best( technically speaking) player, it’s my opinion and am just basing it not for personal accomplishments, but for how he played the game, George best had some flair just not like “mágico”

I can see what all the hype is about. It's deserved.
Incredible close control and the ability to ride a challenge like no-one else I've ever seen, he practically surfs his opponents tackles. You can't knock him off his feet and he just leaves you sprawling on the ground if you try. It's almost like he can read their minds and knows what they are going to do before they do.
I started supporting Chelsea because of zola. If i was alive when Best played, I would probably be a United fan. This guy was a football genius

But you should have supported giggs at Utd. But then again you probably liked the fact that Chelsea in that era were underdogs to utd.

I'm only 21 now so I didn't understand football completely when Zola was at Chelsea, I didn't really know how good Chelsea or any other club really were then. I liked how he would run past people and then score.:p

My era all loved Best. He was a very honest player, not like the actors who are worshipped now.

Just an unbelievable stunning player, electric speed, inventiveness, cheekiness, sublime balance running on the ball. Grace like a ballet dancer. Rifle speed shot, the subtlest of lobs, sending a whole string of players the wrong way. I was fortunate enough to see a lot of United's games in person during the peak of his career. The immediate excitement in the whole stadium when he was on the ball, he fed on it and played the most amazing football I have witnessed. The word genius is overused these days, but he was truly. Bit of a lad though, but I can forgive him that. RIP George.

Heavy, muddy and waterlogged pitches. A ball that got heavier when wet. Add to that not much protection from the refs. Georgie played during this time. Not on billiard table pitches and when the slightest touch or even none at all the player goes down. Free kicks given for minimal contact.Two footed, could tackle, head and dribble par excellence. If Georgie was palying today there would be no doubt who is and was the absolute best. RIP Georgie==Quite simply the best player ever to kick a ball. The name says it all.

in his time, he WAS the best - I can still remember Man U v Stoke, he beat Gordon Banks three times, which is not something that heppened every day! and one was really cheeky - Banks had tossed the ball up before kicking it, and Best stole it off his hand and scored!

Well said,i have also seen Besty run rings around the likes of Martin Chivers and the tall Jackie Charlton,and those guys were no softies.pity more footage of Best has not survived to show younger fans what a magician with the ball he truly was,there will never be another like him.RIP Besty.
Tell me....who else can dribble against 6-7 men and still make one of the most phenomenal goals you've ever seen? Who has had the gut to open his boots even when the match is going on? Like so many kids in the early 70's I would try to imitate Besty's style playing under street lights in the north of London,ah well,we have the memories.There will never be another like him,and as you say,he was still a genius even when drunk,a natural footballing wizard.cheers mate.

I am from India and I think George Best was the best player to EVER play for Man Utd or in the History. He played like Messi and Ronaldo mixed, was more Stylish than Beckham in his day and did not tumble down when touched by defenders. Simply the Best!

All these people on here who say Best was not as good as another player from recent history don't know what they are talking about because they never lived when Best played football. Us English hate to admit it but he was the greatest footballer in the English league and he came from another country. We don't have any patriotic idolatry for Best. He was a legend because of what he did with the football. RIP George!

I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times when he played with hibs 7 in a testimonial. his legs had gone by then, but he was still the best player on the pitch by a country mile.
IMHO he was the 4th greatest (& the best british) player ever imo, just behind Maradona, Cruyff & Pele. not too shabby for a wee guy from Belfast.

Back then players used to kick seven lumps out of Best you can see from a few of his goals in the video that they really smashed him but he stayed on his feet.
I think there was one game were somebody broke his ankle but he played on and scored.
Do you understand what he mean now by today's rules.
Even if you don't like Man U, you gotta respect the hell out of this guy. One of the greatest players ever to play.

Back in those days there was no help for players having problems with drink, gambling etc and Docherty certainly didn't help George, George loved United and felt very hurt at the way Docherty treated him.. United could have dominated the 70's if George had been given help and the team built round him, Sir Alex would have known what to do with him! Had the pleasure of seeing Best play a few times and remember one friendly were he came on 2nd half, visible drunk and still played a blinder. Genius.

To do what he did back in a time when skill wasn't that common, his speed, dribbling, shooting, he never went down that easy like the players of today. It's just a shame I never got to see him play in the flesh. What he done with the ball at his feet was just sensational. I know a load of people are going to comment "Messi, Ronaldo, even Pele to a degree were so much better. But for a British/Irish player to be at that standard was just unheard of, so that's why I think he's the "BEST" there's ever been.
