Just so you know this isn't a hate comment, I just wanna let people know how to do this. The first step is to locate the key, second the chord sequence in the left hand/harmony and finally the melody. I could never learn by ear as great as sonya but this is just to inform people that they can do basic or even advanced versions of this :)
James Robin Yeah they should. It really helps to understand all music and can improve how you handle large workloads. Btw nobody can be tone deaf. If you were you couldnt tell the difference between someone from England and someone from scotland
+James Robin I actually do the reverse. i know the melody by ear to start with, and i build block chords around it. usually discovering the key as i go along. its how i build block chords for songs that have never had block chords . i also listen to the song over and over while i do it, especially the left hand, because while i lack the skill to play in the left hand, i can use what i hear and modify that into my block chords most of the time. that said, my way is arguably much more complicated, but its what works for me. the most recent one i did took a while because the main piano arrangement avoids using certain parts of the song, like the songs original bizzare ending. which in the end led to me ending the song was an oddball chord, a BbM7, which, at the time, i had to look up what it was AFTER i played it, cause while i knew it was a jazz chord of some sort i had no idea what it was
Just Announced! Help us reach 75% of our Indiegogo Goal, and we'll be able to produce an album with full arrangements of these Nintendo Themes which we will give to all of our contributors!
I love the way that she plays the main Zelda theme, everyone else I can find playing that song just hammers the correct keys, but she really puts the right emphasis on the notes and turns it into something really poetic.
John Hogue it's really not that hard though, anybody that even goes through music theory at all can do it with ease. She does an ok job but it's nothing to be amazed at
lol sorry but no, not anyone who studies music theory can do this. It takes a lot of practical training of the ear. I say this as someone who studied classical music at university.
Hazel Eyes5 sorry, are you insulting me for agreeing with you that it's impressive? You really need to relax if you get that angry about a RUclips comment.
The choices for classic games gets better and better. Seriously, I feel like I'm dying already (in the best of ways) when "Kid Icarus" starts it off, but it just keeps going! Oh thank you so very much for this! Like reliving so many hours spent downstairs in a basement with a red delicious apple placed on a paper towel amidst the glow of a giant wooden console television set and a slight smell of mold while I held a light plastic controller with a very short cord, trying my damnedest to get a pixelated Mario to jump properly. Memories...
oh boy, I just discovered your channel and just had to watch all of your videos. I'm absolutely blown away. What a talent! I play piano since the age of 7, that makes 16 years till now, and I do not even dare to dream, that i could possibly play like this at some point in my life. This is pure gold. Please keep up the wonderful work. The duck tales theme was marvellous. You made someone really happy and sad at the same time right here. Stay awesome. ~Phil
She must have some sort of aural-idetic memory or whatever its called. Its very neat how easily she plays and how she can put the game sounds to the piano notes and how when she thinks of how to play it or how to match the notes while listening she not only does the hand motions but she blinks very quickly and her eyes kind of go all over, granted your eyes change position on some types of thought and accessing memory, specifically ones for both cognitive and sensory, thinking of the keys and hearing the notes in her head. Or I could be completely wrong, but its neat to think how people work so fluidly. Great music and great playing, keep it up!
Sonya, you are an inspiration to me. When I was 6 years old, I took lessons. I felt that it was too hard to keep up and would get discouraged. Then, I got a keyboard for Christmas. I quit lessons, and didn't really play a lot. Just recently, I began teaching myself two hand songs from RUclips tutorials. It was hard, but I then Saw your videos. Now I don't give up, and I'm working on Amelie currently. You are an AMAZING pianist, and I want to be like you when I grow up. I'm going back to lessons, too. Thank you Sonya! Don't ever give up, you were meant to play.
I know you guys like doing the big production videos, and I really like them too and hope you guys do well with your campaign to shoot them. But videos like this are also welcome. She is amazingly talented, so just hearing her riff or more structured but less produced interludes to your big productions would be pleasurable :D
I bet she actually takes a while practising but they make it seem like she does it straight away, would be interesting to see if she could do it live with no editing.
She has perfect pitch. When we cut it's usually because I'm blabbering of about something and we don't want the video going too long. At some point we'll do a live event and have some fun with a crowd!
Tom Grey I would imagine perfect pitch must suck sometimes because if you're listening to a song on the radio wouldn't every imperfection just bug the shit out of you?
***** Is perfect pitch necessary for this ability though? Could relative pitch be used as a substitute, and the starting key of the tune just be remembered some other way?
Bryan Liguori I dont think its the most needed things. but I think it really help you relate to the tone at which makes you do these kind of thing faster. like we normally hear it and see what that note is on the keys. how close our guessed are depends on how much our muscle memories relate itself to the sounds we hear right? but she can skip that and jump right into playing. and also aids her in arranging since she's already know the notes and chord progression by perfect pitch.
That Moon Theme gave me instant goosebumps and also netted you beautiful human beings an instant, well deserved subscription from yours truly. Brava(and Bravo) to you, my hat's off to ya.
omg that ducktail moon base theam almost had me crying i could lessen to that all day i think it was simply just beautiful props to u. i even remember playing the ducktails game to.
Damn. That is amazingly awesome talent/skill. I wish I could do that. Instead, whenever I took piano lessons when I was little...first of all, I never even bothered to change out of my pajamas (the piano teacher would come to our house to teach me). And instead of attempting to learn how to read the sheet music, I just kept making my teacher play it over and over again until I memorized the order of the keys to play.
I'll Second Bloody Tears, just saying. You do good work, And it's good to see the full productions as and when you put them out, also fun game to play with a musician. Go nuts, have fun and I wish the project all the best, even if I can't throw money at it (yet >.>
Ben Lashmar On the Geek & Sundry Vlog Channel, we did another on the spot and Tom asked Sonya to do Bloody Tears. Google Player Piano does soundtrack themes!
The Moon theme gave me chills... I'm in awe. Not of her ear (which is phenomenal btw) but in which the grace she played each song. To just hear it and reinterpret with your own touch... That's artistry. Bravo Sonya! :-)
she definitely can. as a flutist it takes about 5min to learn a song by ear. she is more than capable of learning in seconds. benefits of pitch perfect hearing
Absolutely love these. Would've loved them even more if you played each theme a bit longer, since you mostly played just the intro or buildup parts. The parts that come after you stopped playing are the main reason why we love these tunes so much, so please, if at all possible, play a little longer next time :)
I love that others who grew up playing nintendo games feel the same kind of nostalgia that I do. We could be worst enemies yet share the same feeling for these games...
Not gonna lie, the Duck Tales Moon arrangement brought a tear to the eye. Absolutely fantastic and the manner it was created makes it even more unbelievable.
ya me too. That was amazing. What would even be better is if she used a keyboard instead of an acoustic piano. Perhaps get some of the sound effects/different sounding instruments involved with what she does.

Something like Ezio's family or something like that? Please and thank you? And keep up the amazing work.
Yeah.... it would be nice if you guys did a video of all of the warp songs and in many different locations. I know that will be hard, but I think that would be really cool.

What an absolutely brilliant human sonya is. Really incredible. Wish I could do that. Can literally play anything on the spot just from listening briefly . Madness.
+Gonçalo Viena It is available for download on the album. Don't think a video has been released yet, though. I'm so happy that Castlevania has not just one but two different songs on there. =)
+puffinman1138 Thanks but the album can only be obtained with iTunes and I would be happy to pay the dollar for that song only, but since iTunes has a huge incompatibility with Windows 10 I just can't listen to the song, I can't even start iTunes because of the long lasting issue with Apple Application Support software which doesn't work for me even trying with several workarounds I found on the internet.
The Último Knight I honestly feel that people who correct other's grammar on RUclips are in need of a serious friend. Nobody likes grammar nazis. I don't know and nor care. Just a little unfriendly f.y.i. on how many tears I have for your grammar bucket.

Was just checking out my friend Oliver's facebook page and saw this video shared that sounded interesting. Little did I know he inspired the whole freaking video, this is bloody awesome!
Eric Adorno yes, but I’m not a person who just got into Zelda. I’ve grown up with it. I’ve played every game except four swords :), and yes I do not much though, I just started learning...
All these comments are lovely. People question the existence of genius. Whether she can or can't do this in 2 minutes.. what does it matter? She is a brilliant piano player that plays by ear and has perfect pitch. I instantly subscribed. I know a girl right now that can play any song you can think of on the spot. If she ever gets a note wrong she gets upset and says that her professor would have wanted her to play it perfectly. Know skill people.
A number of things to say here. 1.) That Mason and Hamlin is stunning. 2.) Sonya makes it sing! It takes an artist to make an instrument like that play the way it should 3.) It's really interesting listening to which chords and tonalities Sonya picks out from each piece. 4.) Tom, come on man! We need you to get the team up to speed on game music and games. I'm pulling for a castlevania medley in the near future.
I'll throw more money at you guys if you include some of these tracks for purchase..... Hope you guys get your funding and more. Your work has just been such a beauty to behold look forward to more :D.
Good point, to think that things like Kid Icarus and Castlevania got on this list, but no Animal Crossing... The songs aren't as intricate, though, I guess...
TheFrosty Pianist Um, it was specifically NES game music. They said that at the beginning. Castlevania (Konami), DuckTales (I honestly don't know...), and Mega Man (Capcom) aren't Nintendo games, they just were on the NES. Animal Crossing was on GameCube originally.
Gotta admit, I like this vid more than the produced ones. It really showcases the amazing amount of talent that Sonja has. Incredible vid, right in the feels :D
If y'all were to do a Zelda song, it would be much more unique, and awesome if you didn't do the main theme but instead something like Oath to Order, Hyrule Castle or the Stone Tower Temple.
Prodigy! Awesome. Also, before Castlevania even popped up, I said "Bloody Tears"! One of my all-time favorite compositional pieces from any video game ever. The Moon stage, also, one my favorites.
When this video started Duck Tales Moon theme and Simons Quest Bloody Tears were first to come to mind. Good to see one and the other at least mentioned.
1:10 Kid Icarus
1:57 Super Mario Bros. 3
2:34 Original Super Mario Bros.
3:27 CastleVania
4:26 Mega Man II

I hope this helps. =)
Thanks dude
Castlevania = Vampire Hunter. Ducktales = The Moon or Della's Lullaby.

took some classes in college but mostly self taught. been messing about with a piano since I was old enough to sit at one.
If you looked at Sonya's DNA under a microscope, I'm pretty sure you'd see it's made entirely out of musical notes. ♪♫♪♫

I need a full version of the Ducktales theme in a bad way.
+Clint Jones We have a full version on our 8 bit album :-) Link in description
PlayerPiano full halo with choir would be nice
Dude I would cry. OMG so good
I listen to her rendition of "The Moon" every day.
No, but seriously, that Duck Tales arrangement was GORGEOUS.
Seriously though!
Okay lets face it: Literally everyone knew what number 1 was gonna be.
*HECK YEAH!!!!*
havent gotten there yet... is it LOZ theme?
yup
i was expecting it to be somewhere on the list lol

I love how disney finally made an entire cartoon based on a video game
...based on a cartoon
4:42 I love that he is talking but she's just "hmmhmm, not listening, just focusing on the song right now". haha
Though all the arrangements are very impressive, my jaw dropped for the Duck Tales Moon Theme. I never realized how perfect it is on the piano.

Great music and great playing, keep it up!
also just realized this is a 2 year old video, oh well, it still applies
DS Jonesy Yep xD
Man, this is a late comment isnt it
Now I want to see a full rendition of that same Moon theme from Ducktales, that was breathtaking.

that classical piano training is showing. a crystal clear sound, dynamic touch and flawless execution. RESPECT!
yo the duck tales was beautiful
Man everyone in the comment section has the verified tick nowadays
That moon theme arrangement was amazing. I can't get over how awesome it was. It seriously moved me

Ace Case yup i got one friends being perfect pitch. it can go as far as make her ill and a really bad headache time to times.

Is perfect pitch necessary for this ability though? Could relative pitch be used as a substitute, and the starting key of the tune just be remembered some other way?
Bryan Liguori I dont think its the most needed things. but I think it really help you relate to the tone at which makes you do these kind of thing faster.

That sounded too perfect to be real to me... im not hatin or anything but that was amazing to just come up on the spot.
well, shes kind of like a miracle in music
I mean, I dated someone who does on the spot guitar and drum arrangements having never heard the songs before. not too farfetched
Music boner. Beautiful girl and beautiful playing.
I love how Sonya suddenly is ten times more self-confident when she starts playing =)
That Moon Theme gave me instant goosebumps and also netted you beautiful human beings an instant, well deserved subscription from yours truly. Brava(and Bravo) to you, my hat's off to ya.
Weird, i don't remember the duck tales theme bringing a tear to my eye..
that was just pure nostalgia... nintendo just makes the best music, even if u never played the game before its giving u goosepumps
omg that ducktail moon base theam almost had me crying i could lessen to that all day i think it was simply just beautiful props to u. i even remember playing the ducktails game to.
Absolutely awe inspiring. I can't help but admire. I look forward to your future productions Tom and Sonya.
Sonya is incredible.
Goosebumps on the Ducktales tune

Ben Lashmar On the Geek & Sundry Vlog Channel, we did another on the spot and Tom asked Sonya to do Bloody Tears. Google Player Piano does soundtrack themes!
I'll third it LOL
The Moon theme gave me chills... I'm in awe. Not of her ear (which is phenomenal btw) but in which the grace she played each song. To just hear it and reinterpret with your own touch... That's artistry. Bravo Sonya! :-)
She looks so majestic and passionate while playing! :P (Especially in the Zelda one^^)
Nice! Would like to hear full version of moon stage.
i swear.. Duck Tales.. brought tears to my eyes.. and i consider myself a tough dude lol
Kalonji Sams Yeah I had to fight a bear to regain my masculinity...
omg the Ducktales Moon theme needs to be it's own video. Best cover of it I've heard so far.
I spent the entire video hoping for Zelda XD
It was inevitable
We need full versions of these songs. So much talent! Congrats
She is extremely talented but I don't believe for a second that this was her first time hearing all of these classic NES tunes.
it was ;-) Sonya never really played video games.
I think it probably would've been a bit more believable if you didn't cut between playing and listening.
FoxNGames She just turns around. Is it that important to you? Just marvel at her playing.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonya_Belousova
she definitely can. as a flutist it takes about 5min to learn a song by ear. she is more than capable of learning in seconds. benefits of pitch perfect hearing

man, the Moon arrangement was pure magic
that was amazing, there is a real lovely flow to how you play. you have a real sense of timing and mood of a piece. bravo
damn that duck tales got me in tears
Amazing arrangements, plus Sonya is stunningly beautiful!

+CarolsVideos They're the best!

It's really amazing on how Sonya does her techniques... and not just that... she does very very very well
I got teary eyed.
Not gonna lie, the Duck Tales Moon arrangement brought a tear to the eye. Absolutely fantastic and the manner it was created makes it even more unbelievable.
Wow.... I kinda wanna hear the completed versions of all of these. Just wow.
NuFinalSaber We totally want to make the completed versions of all these!
ya me too. That was amazing. What would even be better is if she used a keyboard instead of an acoustic piano. Perhaps get some of the sound effects/different sounding instruments involved with what she does.
Jason Cummings We have some videos planned where we'll have guest musicians adding new elements
that ducktales one sounded reallly beautiful!! Piano is hands down the most amazing instrument in my opinion.
Hips.
Hips for days.
I never thought a Duck Tales arrangement would give me chills. I want it!
No pokemon?
No?
Ok, no pokemon.
Huy Vuong Nintendo only owns 1/3 of pokemon.
Not true, they own 1/3 of Gamefreak, which makes Pokemon but Pokemon itself is 100% Nintendo
well nintendo doesnt own megaman
Neither as Disney
Megaman is owned bij capcom
really seriously this is the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed. it trumps beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Vivaldi... anything
How can Duck Tales sound so romantic and Zelda sound any more heroic?
Loved the bit on Duck Tales where she was listening to the 8-bit, and already practicing the keyboard with her hands. Great stuff!
I wouldn't mind hearing some colaborations with other musicians. Perhaps the Pianoguys or Lindsay Stirling? Your arangements are beautiful by the way.
I gotta say, a collaboration with Lindsey Stirling would blow my mind. :-)
Consider this a vote for a Lindsey Stirling colab!
Kitt Schlatter Well, I in! if there i a vote here lol. A Collab. with Lindsey would be beautiful!!!!!!!
the Ducktails song would be the best for both of them.
Kyle Landry.
Legend of Zelda is my absolute favorite video game soundtrack and your piano skills are effing amazing
Yes!!!! I thought the ducktales one was gorgeous. And then the Legend of Zelda was first and I completely fangirled. If I could have screamed, I would have. And now we have a Teaser for a Zelda Video
Yeah.... it would be nice if you guys did a video of all of the warp songs and in many different locations. I know that will be hard, but I think that would be really cool.
Wow for doing it on the spot and by ear. That's an incredible talent she has!
OMG Please do full version of The Moon theme :O
You're amazing. Incredible on-the-spot arranging! Just damn. wow.
If you watch Tom's face, at 5:54, you can watch the exact moment someone falls in love.
@PlayerPiano
Hey! I have an idea for a video!
Try an "On the Spot" video with Classical music! And an arrangement of "Winter: The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi would be awesome! Or maybe even the "Spring" movement!
Anyways, if you reading this, thanks for taking the time to read this comment in an ocean of mixed praise! I personally think your awesome, and don't stop with what your doing! I love every video you post, so keep going!
Bye, and have a wonderful day!
The moment I heard the Kid Icarus theme, I fell in love
What an absolutely brilliant human sonya is. Really incredible. Wish I could do that. Can literally play anything on the spot just from listening briefly . Madness.
Wow! That was amazing! I was absolutely captivated by her playing skills, and I might've even shed a manly tear. Now that's talent and skill!
Ooooooh That Duck Tales Moon Theme though......
Amazing... I would have to listen to something for 5-7 times before I remembered the tune good enough to pick out just the melody on the piano, haha.
3:50 Bloody Tears of course. And where is it? I'm still waiting for that one. Anybody else?
+Gonçalo Viena It is available for download on the album. Don't think a video has been released yet, though.

That Duck Tales Theme though.

You fully understood my statement and did not need to correct it for clarity, which is the only reason to correct on this site. Maybe you want to feel superior to others in some way. I don't know and nor care. Just a little unfriendly f.y.i. on how many tears I have for your grammar bucket.
Nick West lol I think you are the one with no life, you took that time to write that useless comment, also stahp being a dipshit to others :) k bai
Was just checking out my friend Oliver's facebook page and saw this video shared that sounded interesting. Little did I know he inspired the whole freaking video, this is bloody awesome!
We need a video on just Zelda songs!!!!!!
Catastrophic Cookie Mipha's theme, the Song of Time, Lost woods, Zelda's Lullaby, The Song of Storms! My head is exploding with songs!!!!
Eric Adorno I know she would play them all so well!!!!!!
Did you play BOTW? And you have piano experience?
I was also gonna be triggered if Zelda wasn't in this
I listened to the Ducktales moon theme like 18 times, this is outstanding, great job
An Earthbound medley would be amazing.
A number of things to say here.
1.) That Mason and Hamlin is stunning.
2.) Sonya makes it sing! It takes an artist to make an instrument like that play the way it should
3.) It's really interesting listening to which chords and tonalities Sonya picks out from each piece.
4.) Tom, come on man! We need you to get the team up to speed on game music and games. I'm pulling for a castlevania medley in the near future.
Ok, I'm backing you at IndieGoGo just in the hopes you make a full Megaman song
Felipe Proto Noted :-)
Amazing. She must have such a deep understanding of what chords to play - the piano is essentially her voice
I'll throw more money at you guys if you include some of these tracks for purchase..... Hope you guys get your funding and more. Your work has just been such a beauty to behold look forward to more :D.
This... This... I have no words. Her talent is insane
I was hoping for Animal crossing
Good point, to think that things like Kid Icarus and Castlevania got on this list, but no Animal Crossing...
The songs aren't as intricate, though, I guess...
TheFrosty Pianist Um, it was specifically NES game music. They said that at the beginning. Castlevania (Konami), DuckTales (I honestly don't know...), and Mega Man (Capcom) aren't Nintendo games, they just were on the NES. Animal Crossing was on GameCube originally.
studkid oh well I was hear for piano so I might have dazed off lol
studkid Ducktales was made by Capcom too (the game anyways).
I'm so glad I found this channel, you're absolutely amazing!
I don't believe that's the mega man 2 song that they wanted.
bit late or a reply, but do you mean Dr. wily
Adriel Zwingli Or how about a 15 minute medley that went through many of the songs? :-)
PlayerPiano That would be beyond awesome ^w^
PlayerPiano Do the Song of Healing. My gosh, my gosh, so much potential.
Prodigy! Awesome. Also, before Castlevania even popped up, I said "Bloody Tears"! One of my all-time favorite compositional pieces from any video game ever. The Moon stage, also, one my favorites.
they really should release short sheet music for this
Can I request this like please? I need the ducktales music like NOWWW!
Hearing all these theme songs brought me back to all the classics
Have you done Minecraft themes? Could you please.
LMAO Nice one XD
Love it... Specially the duck tales.. Never tought to be that good in piano ver. Keep it up guys!
OLIVARRRR Y U NO METROIIIIDD???????????
This is just amazing. The amount of time you take to arrange the songs is amazing!!
I want to hire her to play piano in my house all day.
I want her to do other stuff in my house all day 😉
When this video started Duck Tales Moon theme and Simons Quest Bloody Tears were first to come to mind. Good to see one and the other at least mentioned.
