I sadly have no hope for pithead this has happened before with devs but I have yet to see a good game from a team that split like this outside of obsidian.
Good point! And you know, we have seen other developers switch from regular funding over to crowd-funding. I wonder if they ever considered a move like Obsidian did with Pillars of Eternity. I'm sure they would have had enough success to stay afloat.
Gothic 3 gets slammed, but I grabbed it a few years after release when a community patch was available (and I had a PC that could play it), and it was a great experience, particularly the exploration (although the frozen lands became a pain to navigate). My 1st playthrough I'd broken something somewhere, so I couldn't play the official ending. But I made my own by assaulting the king's castle and installing myself on his throne.
@TankUni absolutely epic. I have definitely been a Gothic 3 fan boy since I was young. Tried unsuccessfully to play it on my low end pc at the time. It's very satisfying to play now with maxed out graphics and mods and 1080p
Gothic 2 is one of my all-time favorites, but I was disappointed by most of the titles that came after. I'd already sworn off buying anything else from them.
I am also a big fan of Gothic 3. I understand its objective flaws, but the music and the vibes and the overall atmosphere of the game just makes it the most appealing to me. However i agree with others that G1 and G2 are Pyranha Bites' best and most cohesive games and they spent the rest of their career trying to recreate that formula/success.
Don't know how this video got into my feed, but a lot of my core gaming memories are from Gothic 2. After Pokemon, which initially got me into gaming in the first place, this is probably the most influential game in my gaming history, and laid the foundation for my love of RPGs, medieval (fantasy) games (and I guess Lord of the Rings) in the first place. Sad to see them go, but unless your name us Fifa or Call of Duty, the ever same approach only works so many times.
I agree with most of the video but the end? Giving hope to Pithead Studios, continuing in the spirt of Piranha Bytes? Nah, mark that off the list IMMEDIATELY. The two founders, Björn and Jennifer Pankratz, are a big one of the many reasons of Piranha Bytes' decline! Hell, they didn't even have that much of an influence on Gothic! Björn Pankratz, yes, he was there, buuuut other figures like Mike Hoge and Kai Rosenkranz did WAY MORE for Gothic. And Jennifer Pankratz? She wasn't on board of ANY gothic game! I had SOME hope with Elex 1, I really did. I liked it. It was no Gothic for me, not even close, but there was hope after utterly bad things like Gothic 3: Götterdämmerung (Forsaken Gods) or Arcania. But then came Elex 2... and oh booooy. Nuh-uh, back to Arcania-standards we were. And that damn Björn Pankratz defended Elex 2 so hard, their community-interactions were abysmal and disrespectful and so on and so forth. I am not hating on Björn and Jennifer Pankratz personally, I wish them much luck. But they, especially Björn, are a huge reason for Piranha Bytes' decline and for that I don't have any hope for Pithead Studios or them bringing back that special feeling, that especially the Gothic-series holds for me. I have more hope for the Gothic-remake from Alkimia Interactive with THQ Nordic. And even there I don't have much hope. But more than for Pithead Studios and the Pankratz-couple.
@Kelle-Klaus-with-a-Panzerfaust I have learned so much from your comment, on a topic I feel I was totally oblivious to! I truly appreciate this insight. This situation feels pretty much hopeless now. At least we will always have Gothic 3 and Elex 1.
@@enterthearcade thank you for your feedback! Also I didn't mean my comment to be negative towards you at all, I hope you understand that! I of course have a way much easier time having an insight into what was and is going on with Piranha Bytes and their games, because I am a native German and most of their community-work was done here, as well as the biggest communities for PB-games are in Germany and Eastern Europe - so I totally get that anyone outside Germany and Eastern Europe has a much harder time grasping what was and is going on!
@@enterthearcade There's still hope in Alkimia who are working on the Gothic remake and have some of the original people like Kai Rosenkranz on board. If they do a good job, we might see more from them in the future, perhaps even a Gothic 4. As a longtime PB fan as well, I'm not that sad they closed down. They seemed incapable of learning from their mistakes and they never addressed any criticisms on their RUclips channel. So my expectations for Pithead Studios are low.
@@enterthearcade Naah don't trust them. There's some kind of agenda against Björn going on. Björn has been (co-)producer of any Piranha Bytes game besides Gothic I and demonstrated that he can do his job more than a couple of times. The most interesting thing is...I think Björn was trying to construct a metaverse out of Elex, and all of their games are set in the same universe somehow. There are many oddities...
@@enterthearcade That would be a huge mistake. Gothic 1 first all the way, Gothic 2 builds a LOT upon the first game and you lose a lot of the experience if you haven't played the first game. I'd also advice to play through G2 WITHOUT the addon first, and going through Night of the Raven only as a second playthrough. The addon ruins the pacing of the game quite a bit, but it does add a lot of content and additional challenge, so it is worth playing through as a second playthrough. One final advice on the controls: play with keyboard only, arrow keys to move, left control as the action button and something close to left control as strafe keys (I use a and d personally). Also bear in mind that in Gothic 1 you'll have to press the action key as well as a direction key simultaneously to interact with the game world, for example opening a door would be ctrl + up and closing it would be ctrl + down.
@@khatack Someone else also recommended I go through Gothic 1 first. I think I'll do them back to back, and play the base game of 2 before the Night of the Raven, like you said. I Appreciate the recommendation and the tips!
@@enterthearcade You're welcome, it's always good to have new creators for Gothic content. One other thing that turns away some new players; in G1, if you haven't learned proper weapon skills, your attacks will be clunky as hell.
