Max/MSP Tutorial HD - Jonny Greenwood style stutter effect

- I was asked to create some crazy guitar effect and so I tried to emulate one of the Max/MSP patches that Jonny Greenwood uses. Its definitely my own take on it, so its not what he uses exactly, but it sounds cool! Who could ask for anything more?
If this doesn't make any sense, I'm making a beginner version which goes step by step how to make an ultra simple version of this patch.
I'll be making a version 2 of this patch, which will be more full featured and less hacky. That version I'll have for download when its done.
EDIT:
Ok I decided to have everything I do on here downloadable. So now you can download this patch, but its completely unfinished in this version.
www.joelisrich....
this is one of the most exciting things i have seen in my entire life
Jamie Hince pioneered this effect and it sounded a heck of a lot more musical. Line up two dd-(#)s with one on full feedback and you'll create the same sound. It sounds a lot less processed as well.
Kills for the win
You're absolutely right.
At the time, I was just learning about this and hadn't read much about Jonny's computer patches.
But now I know a lot more and agree with you.
He's a clever guy.
for anyone having trouble getting sound out of this patch or Max/Msp in general, check out the vst plugin Wormhole2. Then for your sound output on this patch use [vst~ Wormhole2] and insert the plugin in your DAW. I couldn't get Max to give me sound with Soundflower, after following all tutorials and configurations. Using Apogee Duet, the input and output meters showed activity, but I could never get sound out of headphones or into Logic. Wormhole2 finally did the trick.
thank you! i struggle with MAX so much and this was so useful plus you made me laugh! :P i love your sound effects, thank you! you may have just saved me from failing uni
my mate Andy says your baked. that was the most insane tutorial i've ever seen. smoke on!
Does anyone have the patch because the link in the description isn't working
Hi Joel. I hooked up my own copy of your patch and I really like it. The feedback is delicious.
Thanks, this was really helpful to tear apart. I learned alot of max/msp with this.
man this plugin is awesome
gracias joel por tu trabajo, me es re útil!!! you are my dude, saludos de Argentina
The link for the patch download is not available, can anyone repost the link ? Thanks
have you found it yet?
Still waiting.
@JoelisRich
Hey man!
The patch sound amazing. Congrats!
I've read all the comments and some people (myself included) are having trouble understanding the connections inside all of this madness.
Where do I plugin my guitar?
- is it guitar-preamp-computer?
And after that how do I get it out into the amp?
How do I connect a footswitch to the patch?
Im sorry for any inconvenience but I'm pretty new and dumb with all this stuff
I would much appreciate your help!
I've seen a few people wondering. To hook up your guitar you need something like the BOSS LS2 which will take your guitar signal send it to your interface (like a fire studio or something, which is connected to your computer/Max). From the interfaces output, the processed guitar signal in max is sent back to the BOSS LS2 and through to your other pedals or to your amp.
And yes: Please fix the link dude!
Build the patch, you'll learn more :)
Thanks for making this , really fun to use.
Yes! Yes! YES! Thanks so much Joel!
For some reason I can get the level meters to bounce but I'm not hearing any sound at all. Don't have this problem with your "beginner's" version of this patch. DSP status seems to all be in order.
Please re-up! Or give us a dropbox link or something please! It was so kind of you to share your patch :) (ps: I promise I will credit you in case I use it in a live performance!)
Thanks for posting this - these tutorials have a lot of useful tips in. (just to double check, you know there's a [stutter~] object, right? - not staying it's better, just checking)
looking for the download for this patch would love to build onto it, great video and great example of solid max patching
Sweet, I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the reply
hey Joel, you did an amazing patch but i couldn't downloaded it, the link is probably dead, can you please fix it? Thanks!
So how do you connect it to the guitar and the amp?
woow, man! you are incredible!!

thanks man
and sorry my english..
i don't speka verry well..
You are my cybernetic hero
mine too :D
the link is in the description and it works in win7
nice! I would personally prefer to have more control and less randomness if that makes sense... shall endeavour to build this and try to understand it! thanks.

Love the tutorial and the patch. Would you be able to provide the guitar setup in the video? What is the guitar signal running through exactly?
Love this patch. Had a little run with it n my latest channel vid 🙏🏻
amazing Patch man! can you repost the link for download it? big up from Italy guy!!! :)
Great, dude! I tried to do it by miself, but my patch gives extra noise and notes when the effects end. I'm downloading it right now and trying to know what I made wrong. Thank You a lot, Joel!
oh you could make dinner in the oven while you make all that noise... haha... I did use the Max program in Music technology.... it was fun.
Very nice, the patch for pure data is similar??
How can I 1) get a copy of max? And 2) get this patch?
Elevtr • Trax max 7 is free to use. If someone can send you the patch you can just use it for free
@hollowharmony1
IK StealthPedal would be one way.
Maybe KMI SoftStep?
i dont know Max (im still trying to see how reaktor works, hehe), but i guess there is a way of creating a controller right? so u could assigned to a midi pedal and control whatever parameter u wanted...
hey, thanks for this! nice! Im using it for beats now : )
I modified it so i can use as a subpatch, inlet/outlet instead of adc/dac, some wires look like control but i think is a bug... because i get sound. This is only for mono signals?
so how do u put it on a pedal or something ? :/ sorry if the question sounds ignorant, I'm not too familiar with this sort of thing.
is there an stomp pedal that does something similar? id rather not program software :)
Hi Joel, LOVE the patch. I'm having trouble with the link to download the patch, is it still available?
I try to copy what you did but it didn't work, sounds like a space echo mine. I connected something wrong. i guess. could you help me? or did you upload the patch somewhere?
Oh God, I love you.
Amazing patch. Is there anyway I can download this patch?
are there any stomp boxes out there that have a similar effect?
link doesnt work anymore
Exellent mr greenwood!!! :)
Hi, could you please update with a working link?
Thanks for the video !!!
Maybe, can u help me with the patch?
Is there any simpless way to create sound like max/msp?
How do you tricker it? Footswitch of some kind?
+Etchmill I made it analog. Use a common sustain/tap/whatever pedal and hook it up with your interface. Scale the signal which comes in when you tap the pedal. Use "IF" to separate the bang.
Is there any complete version of the patch mate?
nice
i just got max and i wanted to try this patch but it looks like your download link is down. :( :( :(
more videos plz!
is the downloads page down? I'm getting sort of a 404
How is the pedal connected btw?
ok. so I made this something like this.... and I want to ask. How to use that thing?
get a boss dd 3 turn the feedback up full, stamp the pedal on and off....simpless
Or buy a digital delay pedal and set it on a fast delay and it will stutter after you play something.
davidwantsahug nah not the same MaxMSP patch randomly choose the repeat time interval, using delay pedal only fixed to one value
say to your friend that i love his beard :)... cool Effect bro!
coool!
a lot of clicks in this patch, why?
Peace.
how to finish the patch? :(
It's completly different
Please share the patch friend :\
Mwfx judder from the U.K.
its funny, i tried redoing the patch, just by looking at yours, but mine reacts a bit differently. very aggressive and with heavy pitches and ramps. anyways, any idea how to get rid of clicking from my output?
same question...
he looked really scared at 6:03
seems like a cool patch, but you're not really explaining anything & the link is just some text code... nice video, but is kind of unhelpful for beginners... if you explained the setup like you did for the basic stutter effect, it would be perfect...
laterz
sounds like dan deacon
zoom h4n!
how do you connect your guitar?
