+alexalex13131 I would be soooooo happy if they put this on dvd. Its unfortunate that Ken is no longer on broadway but if I had it on dvd that would be amazing
I saw Yul Brenner and Constance Towers on Broadway in 1977 or 1978 (it ran both years but I don’t recall just when we went) in The King and I and it is an evening I will NEVER forget! My boss (who became my best friend at the time) had a birthday and her father bought tickets for the 3 of us. We were center stage, about 5th row. They were so close I felt like I was in the show! LOL It’s an amazing musical! Such grandeur, such opulence, the songs and costumes, the characters ... BIGGER THAN LIFE, as the saying goes. From this clip, it seems close but no one can top Yul Brenner! :::SIGH:::
MediaLover194 Have a blast! And I'll be sending a pm to hear about your experience. Do you think you will visit the cast at the stage door after the show is finished? :)
+LionRoseMusic I fell in love with him being the king just from pics. I wish I could see the whole performance of this with him in it. I wish they would put it on dvd
June 2016, New York City, with my tickets to watch this amazing revival, and I missed it because I got sick. Still regret it to this day... I love Ken Watanabe!
WHOOOOOOOOOO! Just read that the Cast Recording for this revival production will be available to buy on June 9th. Thank goodness! Since I will not be able to catch this live. A recording is what I desperately need to hold and treasure in my possession. :)
I am glad that there are so many wealthy suburbanites, Manhattanites, and tourists, because with the prices for this show, nobody else will be able to afford it, until it starts to fade and discount tickets become available.
If you go to the TKTS booth in Times Square the day you want to see the show they sell tickets for shows 50% off that day. I saw a broadway show for 75 USD instead of the regular $100-200, well worth the price considering the experience in my opinion; it's not something you do every other day.
Thanks. I'm a native New Yorker who had been going to theater for over 30 years. I know about every discount. The reality is that many shows cannot and will not stay open all that long once they start discounting in a way that is affordable for many. Take for example the above show, which recently closed.
The Lincoln Center Theater proudly presents the "TONY AWARD" winner for Best Musical Revival, Best Leading Actress in a Musical Kelli O'Hara, Best Featured Actress in Musical Ruthie Ann Miles and Best Costume Design by Catherine Zuber Among it's equally tremendous nominations- Ken Watanabe (Best Leading Actor in a Musical) Best Director (Barlett Sher) Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) Best Scenic Design (Michael Yeargan) and Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder). Heck yeah baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I saw the Hollywood movie as a little kid and was scared senseless. the cartoon was so light and fluffy compared to the real story. but if I get the chance to see the musical one day I will be happy.
+desiderataification Yea I grew up on the animated movie. Then I watched the movie and I got sad. But I would love to see this. I hope they put it on DVD
I understand why many shows on the Great White Way close. For financial reasons, it is the responsible thing to do in the long haul. So I grasp why this jewel of a show needed to be let go. However, I fail to see why it did not earn the right to be pro-shot as a fair well gift. Most certainly deserved it across the board!
Silver54ful it’s been that way since Broadway first began; musicals especially. It’s also why 90% of stage actors are either relatively unknown (outside the stage circuit) or film/tv actors doing stints of stage work. Most broadway big names made their name from tv/film even if their roots began on stage. A really great stage production is like producing a film or tv show 5 days a week with nowhere near the financial investment because no commercials so ticket prices are high. It’s also why so many productions go “on the road” more now than in the days b4 film/tv and why some have traveling casts and one that stays local - trying to get money coming in to keep the main show going. And for all the audience pays, stage actors (even the BIG names) don’t get paid anything close to what they would for the same role if it were a film or series. Stage has always been much more for the love of performing than for the monetary gain. But seeing how stage is still going strong, despite the high cost of tickets and the (relatively) lower performer pay, it’s proof that people on both sides love live performances and probably always will. If one loves stage but finds it expensive, they can either stick to smaller productions, pre opening nights (when available), out of town warmup performances, saving up for one or two on Broadway shows a year or (if the particular theatre offers it) Standing Room Only (STO). It’s always been a luxury to see Broadway shows but if you can get to do it even once, it’s a moment you’ll never forget! 🤗
For anyone who saw him live, how's Watanabe's singing? Acting wise he's a no brainer for the King, but I didn't know he had any kind of vocal training. Or was just fortuitous stunt casting a la Chicago or Cabaret?
A very dear Thai friend saw this production in London recently, and found it very derogatory of the then Thai king,a typical American unsensitive adaptation......
The two leads are utterly perfect.
