Ska Pilgrim when I first read this my reaction was “that may be a bit of a stretch...” but then I thought about it and you may be right. He’s someone who is doing something to help expose new people to the genre, he plays in a decently big aka band, and has been appearing as a guest for a lot of other bands in various locations too. It’s a big assertion but very possibly a correct one.
Turns out if you work really hard at something you're really passionate about, you can actually make difference. Who'd've thunk? Makes me think of the intro to his cover of MCR's I'm not Okay, where he says "I don't wanna be the fourth wave, I just wanna (trumpets start playing)"
At first listen I wasn't sure I liked this, the constant switching between the heavy fast punk strumming and light ska up strums felt like it didn't match what I expected, which would have been a more 1:1 cover of Float On, but then listening again I let those expectations go and tried to enjoy this for what it was, a new take on an old song and I liked it more. With the lyrics and the sound it feels like an original song a ska punk band would write and play, instead of a 100% faithful rendition of the original. Which is I think more impressive, especially for somebody like you who does a lot of covers and probably wants to innovate on them.

At first I thought the aggressiveness kind of didn’t fit this song, but now I think erring on the punk side of ska really fits the lyrics in a pissed of, passive aggressive, Goldfinger sort of way.
