Mage was the game I loved & played the most even more so than Vampire. I also ran the most Mage games amongst the social circles we had at the time, and even do so still recently on the rare occasion nowadays. I knew this video was on the way, but didn't know it was so soon! I have a lot of the M20 source materials and overall I have to say they are not too bad either with a few being very helpful indeed. If you liked the older 2nd edition.. hell even the 1st edition, you will be not only be fine with M20, you will probably be gobsmacked by it.
Thanks for this, Grim. A lot more on mage as a whole than on the 20th book itself, but it sounds like that's fitting. I've heard this was an attempt to pull together all the loose threads that revised caused in the mage community. I'm glad I made a good purchase. I grabbed it when Onyx Path was having a 90% off sale. I also picked up Realms of Pugmire for some reason, but that's neither here nor there. Again, thanks Grim. I look forward to playing this masterpiece some day.
Never got a chance to play mage when it first came out, but I was blown away by the concepts and ideas behind it. I'm gonna have to pick this back up as my original copy has disappeared...great review!
I got this game in it's Revised edition back in the day and it was my introduction into the World of Darkness. It is also the only RPG that has seen continued play since that day now almost 24 years ago!
World of Darkness is something special, i am glad i watched my friend play Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. I am hyped to run Vampire v5 and i'm hyped to play more WoD game lines. Mage sounds awesome!
I was a Werewolf guy, but me, my brother had Mage and our cousin had Vampire. I know that the newer editions have been toned way down for this softer awkward generation, but a part of me does hope that Mage will get a 5th Edition update next. (Because for some reason people that are “#Triggered” by sexual content and violence, think they want to play as vampires… Something thats 60% sexual, 20% violence, 10% lurking in the shadows, 10% posh etiquette.) The 3 core books(and Hunter) though, were legit, dripping with that 90s “No fucks” attitude, and were a badass grim-dark alternative to D&D. They made me LOVE Table Top Role Playing.
I don't know much about Jess Heinig, but I do know that back in the days of if Mage: Revised he was getting a lot of shit on the White Wolf duscussion forums. I'm not surprised if he got pissed off and lashed out at the fans that wouldn't leave him alone. Personally, I didn't have strong opinions on the Avatar storm at all, but I definitely enjoyed Revised Edition as a whole more than other editions of Mage.
Mage: The Ascension was one of those games I never quite figured out how to play or run (play or run *well*, that is) but found engrossing to simply *read*. To be quite honest, that’s always been my main use for role-playing books… in a way they’re like the Lord of the Rings maps and appendices, yanno? Or more self-aware occult lit without the tedious bits.
Big fan of Mage as I am of all of the original World of Darkness games but I have to be honest Changeling is my favourite as I can't resist anything Fae related
OK that's pretty interesting! I flicked through it years ago but did it very dense. What do you think of Kult? And Unknown Armies? Oh, and Urbanski's magic game?
This was not a context wherein i expected to here the term "Chick tracts". I had more than a few earnestly handed to me in high school. I thought they were funny. Lol
I always wanted to play Mage back in the day; my crew was big into Vampire for a while there (still have a couple of the guys nagging another of the crew to run another VtM game to this day, lol), Werewolf to a lesser extent, but for whatever reason Mage was never on the table. Still got the original core books for all three, though. Loved the idea of the spellcasting having to be explained in a rational way to avoid paradox. Sadly the only "mage" I ever got to play was in a one shot of that horrible d20 WoD thing they put out in the early 2000s, although admittedly I liked the idea of how it handled spellcasting too, for a d20 system game.
Probably the best example of a great game that would never survive today's climate. Even back in the day we called it mage the cultural appropriation. That being said five out of five would play anytime.
Did you get your order from driverthrurpg? I'm curious as I want to pick one up but, for the price I want to at least have a recommendation if possible. Thanks for your time and all the content as always@@PostmortemVideo
Ive had a copy of this on the shelf for a couple decades, do t think I e ever read it. Just took it down and after googling the cover looks like I have the revised edition. The book you're flipping through is far more beautiful than the hardback I have. I think I'll pick up this 20th edition even if just to add to the collection!
For a minute there you me flashing back three decades to some good times, thanks

I knew that you'd arrive.
M20 seemingly gets a lot of thumbs-up ratings from people whom I respect so I'll have to try it some day soon.
Ish :)
Mage was and still is my favorite game. Good times. :D

christ i miss 90's White Wolf
If anyone isnt familiar with this setting, I highly recommend a video by TheBurgerkrieg.
An hours long explanation to please any lore nerd.
Reading Mage the Ascension and its supplements got me an A+ in my fourth year University Sufism course.

Is that the standard color edition?
No, premium.
