  • What Exactly Is A Biennial Plant? Well, its a type of flowering plant right smack in the middle of Annuals, plants that live, produce, and die within a growing season, and Perennials, plants that live, produce, and produce over several growing seasons.
    Biennial plants are those that complete this cycle of life over two years. Its a fascinating life strategy and many of our favorite backyard crops are actually Biennials! Watch and find out which ones!

    What can I say that hasn’t been said? I learn more on this channel in 2 minutes than 40 on another channel! Please keep filming these short videos. How about root types in common vegetables?

    Please bear with me I'm learning more tan when I lived up north and gardened I've been in the south a very very long time and just recently got back into vegetable and herb gardening I'm older than Biden and still have most of my marbles . The old saying is there's no stupid questions . Thank you for your fresh understandable approach.

      My friend Joan used to tell anyone who asked that she was "Older than dirt!". She was still one of the smartest, & kindest people I've ever met. I told her I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. ( I was 50 at the time! ) Most of the same stuff from up north applies down here, just different timing on planting, & some things grown in full sun up north will like partial shade down south. Best Wishes to You from South Florida .

    Thanks SO much Jeff...I never could figure out where carrot seeds came from! Now I know.
    A video on collecting these seeds would be helpful sometime in the future.

    I almost asked the same question , about how the plant like a carrot or beet can replicate after its eaten , lol .
    So I guess this means I can leave a few in and the following year I'll get seeds from them ?

      That's right Carmella... And it's exactly how the seed companies do it to sell us the seeds! :-)

    I have yet to purposely over-winter a biennial and I have not collected seeds from a biennial so far. I have had carrots and onions that were overlooked at harvest survive the winter and begin to grow again but never to the point of producing seeds, so far. Very cool plants! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

      Its pretty cool Kevin....not many people have even seen what a carrot or beet flower even looks like. I'll try to snap a few pics this year! 🙂

    Sometimes things don’t go as expected: my first (and so far only) Swiss Chart took years to become mature. This year I have harvested a lot from this one plant. Even after it has flowered. And I am still harvesting aka it is still growing (in Germany). I’m curious to see what it does next season.
    However I am going to sow another one. 😂

    Always enjoy a garden quickie, cheers Jeff. I don't know if you're open for project suggestions but if you are, how about a 3 sisters grow along in the coming season. That would be great.

  • @graham961

    Sorry to be super dense. Carrots are biennial, but I pull them up and eat the each year…so how does the 2 year life function please?.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 года назад +4

      Hey Graham, the life cycle of the carrot doesn't end with you eating the tap root. The life cycle of that carrot would continue into next year when the carrot heads flower and go to seed. That's how the plant replicates itself. Same with onions, same with beets. Yes, we eat them before that happens.....but the plant's goals are to reproduce, and they don't do that until the 2nd season.
