The event was fantastic as well. If only DPC major was introduced earlier, this MLG should be one of them. Definitely a worthy major material since 2013 had so many good 3rd party tier 1 event

here in 2023 after EE retiring. I saw it "live" back then, goosebumps allover, what a time it was.
This was made with love, you can really tell. Even item pickups that made a huge impact later on were highlighted.

Still watching this masterpiece in 2021. OG may be the perfect example of Cinderella story. But to old timers like me, this is my first taste of a good tournament run. Plus Singsing is here and I am a big fan of his streams :)

This was considered rise of New Blood back then. The rise of Arturo.

I mean, OG’s story is only exciting because of events like this. 7ckingMad is clipped a few times in this video, and n0tail came in from HoN in (iirc)2013, and the “Full retard” and “Kill this FUCKING DK” moments came within 12 months of that.
I think what made Speed/C9 so exciting was the visual distinction of their style compared to most other top teams of the day. OG had a lot of that as well, but post 2015, in order to win a game you had to be able to win a lot of coordinated teamfights, in 2013, Speed were choosing to just bet tournaments on teamfighting, just because of their roster. This is far before the changes to gold/exp from combat and farming, so way more strategies were viable, and you didn’t come back by killing at that time.

The run that DotA 2 had from 2011 to early 2014 was insane. The Speed/C9 roster had to be the most exciting part of it. This tournament was awesome, and the team went on to be the only sign of life at TI4. From its ashes would come dynastic teams and long careers for the former Speed players.
The exciting style of play was basically patched out during the hard push meta, momentarily fixed in 2015, then executed completely on the new engine. The style of team fighting that Speed used relied heavily on certain items that were nerfed directly or indirectly(Mek), as well as the Overton Window for viable strategies being much larger. In 2013, most teams would be either looking to split push or go 4 protect 1, so focusing on a brawling style made them disruptive and hard to prepare for. Everyone is made to fight in a chaotic way in the newer updates, which took away a lot of their off-meta surprise. EE’s carry style also is something of an enigma, which only would really have worked on the old EXP/Gold system, when the relative power level of a carry, and the means to power them up, were completely different than in the modern game.
Just the other day, EE retired from competitive DotA 2. The meta was mismanaged to fuck after 2015 so Sing was already out, Aui is retired and coaching, pieliedie is playing tier 2 events, and Arteezy, despite getting better since these events, and basically being NA’s chosen one, has somehow lost maturity since this event. It sucks that this era ended, and while I do have a bit of the ‘smile because it happened’ feeling about it, I can’t help but wish for an alternate world where the changes were less dramatic, and we were waiting for the next Alliance, Speed, or DK, as opposed to what we have now. I suppose that would rob us of TI8, so maybe it’s an irrational idea, but the thought remains.

Back when casters still called them "A-god" and "EE-sama," and even merlini was blown away by a blink dagger Clinkz that would become essential for every Clinkz from that point on. The young princes of dota (arteezy, ee, singsing) taking their crown and shaking hands with the old DK pros (mushi, iceiceice, burning). MLG columbus was the prime time for dota and I hope for another tourney worthy of this one in 2015.

    • @Reaching8

This guy gets it! I’ve been watching DotA videos since 2006 and playing since 2009. This is my favourite non-Valve tourney run ever, and the Speed/C9 roster will forever be rewatchable. From this team came an entire era of DotA that’s only just ending now, which I don’t really think can be said of many rosters from ‘13. The only events that have been notable since this are like… The DK run(which you see part of in this video), NaVi vs C9 at TI4, EG at Summit with Mason, where we learned how big Fear’s brain was, EG finally winning TI, CDEC going ham, and OG going the distance. Of these, the ones that you can just put on and watch whenever are both the Speed/C9 roster, they were just that unique.

I'm so glad I followed this tournament. MLG columbus is the perfect example that you don't need a ridiculously big prize pool to make an exciting and succesful LAN. It was the most hype I had along with TI3 finals. I don't remember following a toiurnament consistently exciting ever since. Don't get me wrong, there are still exciting games but they are few and far between. I hope tournament organizers look back at this.

      Truman Chang
Hate to be the one to break it to you, but TI4 was pretty terrible. Don't get me wrong, the prizepool was massive but there was NO hype. Newbee found a dominant strat and no other team was able to play past it due to the unknown nature of the meta at the time. TI3 Finals are probably the epitome of a high-stakes comeback, so just fyi using TI4 as a metric for legendary tournaments is a bad idea.

same for me, just watched few final days of ti3 and then the whole mlg columbus. this is what made me obsessed with dota for a year, until ti4 happened lol. those were the best days for the game imo, even with ti8 OG in mind. back when it was just guys being dudes and everything felt so personal.

Good amount of play from the important games, short breaks showing the results, well timed music. Just amazing, I wish there were more like this. Though of course the material you had to work with here is pretty unique.
