  • Take a ride with Mike Skeen driving a few laps in a BMW SpecE46 at VIR. No lap records here with a passenger and high ambient temps; these were also my first laps in the car before any suspension adjustments and we were dealing with more understeer than ideal.

Thank you for another great video. Can you explain the benefit of the choice of shifting when you do after turn 5 versus winding it out and shifting after turn 6. Keep 'em coming!

It depends on the car, obviously. For cars that are full throttle through 4/5/6, you want to shift at peak power. For anything else, you likely have to breathe the throttle on entry to 5a, so you might as well, get the shift done there rather than lifting at turn-in and then lifting again for the shift after the apex. Also, in many cars you can't go full throttle in the lower gear, but you are just getting into the power band in the higher gear as you straighten up.
While I'm addressing gearing, some have asked about 3rd for T3 in the SE46...this was mostly because 4th was too long with a passenger. I think 4th could be the way to go when driving solo.

@@MikeSkeenRacing Thank you Mike! I will be there this weekend and give that a try. Makes sense when you explain it that way. I often struggle with 5a so smoother should definitely help. Continued success with your racing!
