  • A Dick Van Dyke Show Home Tour. You'll get to take a virtual tour of the main floor, basement and exterior. You'll also learn some fun Dick Van Dyke Show behind the scenes information about the show. You'll see Rob and Laura Petrie's bedroom, Ritchie's room, the guest bedroom, kitchen and garage. We'll even go downstairs and explore the basement - both versions, the basement with the rock and the basement with the pool table.
This is another amazing example of really good set design and a mid century modern home from the 60's. The Dick Van Dyke home has remained a fan favorite for 60 years. The 60th anniversary of the show is coming up in October.
If you love classic tv and especially tv homes, this channel is for you. We walk around inside of the homes as though the tv houses existed in real life.

When I was a kid...9 or 10 years old...I spent a lot of time trying to draw Floorplan of homes of my favorite TV shows. You know, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, etc. Now I'm all grown up & you've done it for me! Thank you. Also, my name is Marina as well, but spelled with an "e." Kindred spirits?

Never could quite visualize how all these rooms would fit together in a house, thanks so much for this! For some reason I always assumed the garage went the other way, with the garage door on the end by the oddly shaped utility room, so that when Millie or Jerry left out the back sliding door, they would be crossing the driveway. Still loved seeing this house!

Great choice! That was always a cool home with its curved wall fireplace. Rob Petrie was always portrayed as a very up-to-date guy and Laura Petrie a hip homemaker. Their interiors were very contemporary. This is what Midcentury Modern was really like; warm, inviting and friendly, not high concept minimalism as it often is in today's revival. So Dick lived in the town next to the town where my family had a business for years. He had a ranch outside of cave creek az where i still am. I met him a few times and he was in our parade many years.
He owned a studio that was county land at the time, but close to his ranch in cave creek where some of the episodes were shot. Scottsdale ended up taking the county land in the az water land grab of the late 80s and his studio was then in Scottsdale. It was used for photo shoots last i knew of but ended up being bulldozed to make way for another housing development in north Scottsdale. The worst part of growing up in a destination area is to many people move here and everything that made it special disappears.

We saw Richie's room, the basement, and the garage but never the den/guest room or the outside of the house. Great tour. Looking forward to the other ones you are going to show.
I forgot to add I think they showed the 4th wall in the living room once during the episode of Richie's birthday party and I remember seeing the TV but not the piano but I would guess that is where it would be. What is strange is it looked different up against the wall because the TV in the show was often taken from the living room to their bedroom so Rob and Laura could watch it at night.

Hi Marina! You did such a wonderful job on this video! I really felt like I was achieving a dream-to walk through the Petrie home, my Barbie dream home as a girl. Of course, I loved the Brady Bunch home as well since I could relate to one of the girl characters. And the Partridge Family home. I loved homes that were different from my own (a Tudor from 1922 but similar in fun and good times since my mother was a HS drama teacher, both parents sang and danced and they had the best parties on the block!). I guess I love shows about the entertainment world which brings me to my request. I recently discovered and binged The Danny Thomas Show. What a great set! It was the ultimate entertainment show because Danny basically played himself. So many famous people guest starred! And as you know, he was involved with the making of TDVDS, and his daughter, Marlo, was the original single girl living alone in the big city, in the fun That Girl! series. TDTS is dated, but worth considering. And the actress who played his wife had a much more glamorous wardrobe than Laura Petrie did! Wow! (Though Laura didn’t need grand outfits). Keep on doing what you’re doing. Thank you. You’re amazing! 😊

Probably not enough requests for this one but any chance you might ever consider doing the home from the 70’s hit tv show, ‘Family’? I just adored that home. I always wondered about the steps Buddy would go up, from the kitchen. That kitchen was so cozy and I always wanted to go all the way up those steps and see where and how exactly it lead to all the bedrooms and then where in conjunction it was to the other stairs that came down into the living room. The property the home was on was also so pretty and oh how I’d just love to see the entirety of the guest house Nancy stayed in on the side of the home. Good job. I never thought of trying to model TV homes, as even as a child, I realized these homes are just impossible. You pointed out here the near impossible placement of the window in the Master bedroom. Also, quite often, the exterior view we are given of some TV homes simply don't match the interior layout. And some things just have to be ignored. In the pilot episode of Dick Van Dyke, Rob and Laura go to Richie's room from the kitchen by walking towards the camera! But you do a good job filling in the gaps.

You've brought another of my dreams to life. I've spent so much time working out these floor plans in my head and it's wonderful to see them realized. I can't believe the Petries almost didn't take that house just because there was a rock in the basement! Those peoples was crazy. If you were to do Millie and Jerry's house it's supposedly the same floor plan but reversed, although judging by the interiors we see they must have done an awful lot of remodeling.
Your exterior is awesome. I'm really curious why the producers decided not to have establishing shots for this series, but of course how could they with this floor plan. I think it really adds to the comedy somehow to keep the characters hermetically sealed. There's also no winter, and the fireplace was never lit. Considering how unusual it is, that seems strange to me that they wouldn't show it off.
FWIW, you've probably already gotten this information from other comments but there's a glimpse of the living room fourth wall and piano in A Nice, Friendly Game Of Cards and Happy Birthday & Too Many More.
Great work as always. Thanks so much.

FABULOUS! Loved it! I have loved this show since the 60's. When I was a kid, I thought that I would have an atomic coffee pot like Laura's when I grew up. Then, in the very early 70's I saw my first Chemex on Mary Tyler Moore's show, I was obsessed with it! I finally got my first one in 1984, I've gone thru a few over the years, still my favorite way to make coffee. Also, I recall that when All in the Family first premiered that was the first time I knew of Rob Reiner. I was a pre-teen at but I knew from a TV Guide article that he was the son of Carl and of course, I knew that the DVD show was based on Carl Reiner. So I had always wondered whether Rob Petrie's character was named after Carl's son Rob Reiner, I just finally Googled it and it was!

I'm 66 years old, my parents are gone, and they take me back to a simpler time. I truly "get lost" in these homes, and let my imagination take over! ♥️

You do such incredible work! And a lot of research. This is one of my favorite all time TV shows, and I was not even born when it debuted. I've seen every episode multiple times. You've done so many homes already... I don't remember seeing the one from My Three Sons. Looking forward to your next video!

Awesome work! Well done!!!!! I majored in Architecture before a major change and this is exactly how I pictured it. I didn't have the patience to put in all the detail you did though. I understand it's not a typical house floor plan but my dream would be to buy it as it is and build it with a few spacial modifications.

    (1) Whatever the MBR lacked in closet space, that spectacular kitchen looks like it was designed for a different house. (2) That exterior is a Frank Lloyd Nightmare! I love it, though. From the main view/front door it looks so right that for an instant I almost felt I had seen it at least once. Then as we orbit, wow. (3) The brilliant simplicity of the set design, which created perfect spaces for the characters and stories, is so economical that this house remains vividly clear and accessible in the memory- it is one of the least confusing homes in classic television. (and one of the warmest and most welcoming). (4) The "That Girl" set revelation is amazing. I know the shows had common writers/producers in Persky and Denoff. (5) Can I ever say it enough times? I love, love, love your work.

I was friends with Perry Ellis’s aunt back in the 80s. The reason I mention this is because she told me that Perry named his daughter after his close friend, Mary Tyler Moore (his daughter’s name is Tyler). I’m still sad that MTM is gone! Watching this, I realized that I must have missed a few episodes of the DVD show even though I was a big fan growing up. I loved seeing the floor plan/tour and used to wonder about many things that you answered. There was an interview on Larry King Live with MTM and DVD back in ‘99. They had great respect and admiration for one another. Thanks so much for this trip down memory lane!

Another great job, and a beautiful house! I love the wall-mounted mirrors that show what would actually be reflected in them -- very cool. I think the kitchen colors are kind of yucky, but I imagine they picked colors that would have looked good in black and white. Had the original broadcasts been switched to color, the Petries would probably have redone their kitchen. The things you put on the kitchen fourth wall were perfect -- big window, garden view, plants, more countertops and storage -- can't go wrong with any of that! I like the idea of the big, shared bathroom for Richie/guest. Having the master bathroom be the only bathroom in the house would be really awkward. Regarding the guest room, given how much entertaining the Petries did, that room was probably used mostly for "just put your coats on the bed" purposes, since many TV homes didn't seem to have coat closets. I see the new basement was minus the rock -- I wonder how the Petries got rid of it, and if that solved Jerry Helper's water problem! Loved seeing the exterior -- I sure hope Rob hired someone to mow that lawn; it looks like a nightmare of a job, at least for someone with long working hours.

It hadn’t occurred to me before watching your presentation, but it is illogical that there would be only two or three steps down into the Petries’ basement. They wouldn’t be able to stand up in it. There would have to be 12 or 13 steps for the ceiling to be high enough. Thank you for your efforts in putting this together. Mark Evanier just featured it on his newsfromme website, so expect lots of traffic.

I should have explained in the video, or left the door open so people could see. In the episode with that first basement, with the boulder, there was a flight of stairs before getting to the door we see with the 3 steps.

Very enjoyable house tour! Some of the colours were a lttle suprising, but typical of homes at that time (I was there!) Remember, they had to choose colours that would photograph well in b&w. That show was much more sphisticated than others at that time, which is why it has become a classic

Thank you for this tour of their home. I remember when it was in first runs as a new show. It has always been one of my favorite tv series. My son bought my wife and I a new smart tv and we tuned into the streaming services and there was the Dick Van Dyke show. What impressed me is the clarity of the picture. The quality of the cameras they used is stunning. It is ironic only now can we see the details , the texture of their clothing fabric and the like. The irony here is there was no way for the producers to see everything those cameras captured. Even the reflected light from Mel’s head! Lol.
