we learn about world wars and internal history, but arguably the most important aspect of british history is strangely absent. Maybe the conservative party don't want any kids to learn about what it truly was so they can hark back to it uncritically. To focus on the history of empire would bring up a lot of ethical questions that would reflect poorly on certain modern policy decisions

And if we’re honest, they still are, with a monopolised media trying to tell those being exploited that it’s all their own fault. Gaslighting on a global scale.
Most Brits know nothing about our colonial history! Beyond a large part of the globe/maps having once been coloured red. They, like me, were taught nothing about it at school.
Amen to that, brother: people need to be educated. There are too many trolls on the internet spreading the falsehood that people like this great man Sidney here and my parents did nothing for this country and only took jobs away from 'the British people', forgetting that they are from former British colonies and were British with British passports when they came here. It would suit these trolls that people forget the great contribution the Commonwealth countries have made to the UK, with the Commonwealth Institute in London being turned into a design centre and millenials and Gen Z being suitably distracted by online gaming and shopping to care.
We should be learning about this instead of the freaking Tudors. Who cares how many wives Henry VIII had? It is absolutely irrelevant to anything, whereas these big problems continue to impact people's lives today. Another example, some of my Irish classmates (growing up in London) never properly knew about the severity of the potato famine nor the brutality of the English occupation of Ireland. It wasn't taught at all (even though allegedly it's supposed to be, legislatively!) - they had to find out themselves, much later, either by chance reading or by having the good fortune of half-decent lecturers at uni. But not everyone gets to go to uni, not everyone can afford to, and it certainly shouldn't be left to chance. We should all be properly educated on the cruelty and travesty of colonial history, because otherwise how are we going to make amends for the damages wrought, and build the foundations for a better and fairer future?
I think Netflix should commission a film about both the Windrush generation & Grenville towers as they did with the Post Office scandle and perhaps something would get done.
If you find it "unbelievable" consider that the fault is with you and your own naivety. Britain is in fact the 19th least corrupt country in the world, on a scale that runs to 178 nations, ie. there are 159 countries more corrupt.
Great piece, thanks. There is nothing British or patriotic about scapegoating or maligning people of a different skin colour or religious faith. We have had decades, even centuries, of immigrants to the UK not least because at one time we militarily conquered and subjugated most other countries across the world. It's past the time for our politicians to start behaving like adults and stop discriminating against minority communities for any reason and spreading hate and discontent. As a nation we are surely better than that and we owe a debt of gratitude to anyone who has come to this country and contributed like this gentleman.
It's important to remember he was a British subject at birth, and arrived to England as a British national. He was born before the British Nationality Act 1948 which redefined British subject as a citizen of the UK. It's almost a quibble but people didn't think of themselves as immigrating to the UK since they'd been British their whole lives. Sure they were coming from an overseas island but it's not like being born on the Isle of Wight meant you weren't British. The only difference in their minds was distance not nationality.
I thank this gentlemen for his service, for his bravery and for the great contribution to our society made by the Windrush generation and their descendants. The Windrush scandal is a national disgrace. To my fellow UK voters: please vote tactically to defeat the Conservative candidate in your area, so we can have a government that will actually fix this.
So many native British people treated the Windrush immigrants with such callous disregard it's shameful. Now we owe them in so many ways and this business should be settled quickly to try and maintain some dignity for all concerned.
As a 71 year old veteran I’m ashamed this hasn’t been sorted and praying that the next government sorts it within their first term in office. Our children need to learn the history of our country, warts and all, nothing brushed under the carpet.
Not even their first term. When there is a genuine will to resolve issues like this it can be done in the first year. Status and rights can be corrected overnight. Basic action to ensure all pensions and benefits are being paid can be completed in months. The rest will take a little longer. I recall Windrush children joining our schools in the 60s and 70s. Then the Pakistanis and Indians who followed in the 70s. Every one of their parents worked and many were involved in civic activities to integrate. Telling both parents and children GB isn't their home is as bad as the old No Black's, No Irish signs used in the 50s and 60s for vacant property.
That the way the game tends to work drag it out till most if not all are dead . They may prosecute the people at the pol and if they do that will take decades . It's an old game .
My aunt once told me that a patient asked her if we still swing on trees! She said yes, and when you pass we sh!t on your head. Ppl still drop the coins in your hand and I reciprocate 😉
Being white and British I'm so ashamed by the way these lovely people are treated, some of them are true heroes all I can say not all Brits would treat you so bad, shame on numerous governments.
Support Justice4Windrush .. please don't feel ashamed, share the momentum to create change. We were poorly educated about colonialism and our national curriculum needs changing to educate future generations to understand that we are all a massive mixture of peoples from around the world. Whatever our colour, ethnicity or belief structure .. we are all human x
Stop it. There’s two sides to this story. There are a lot of dangerous people here who don’t appreciate your shame - they see it as weakness and play on it. We need a system that is fair, consistent and effective.
Democracy's effectiveness heavily relies on the education system that supports it. Without a well-informed public, true democratic participation is compromised. Corporate influence has long tainted politics, with powerful businesses controlling decisions that should serve the people. The societal structures we live in today were crafted by the wealthy, for their benefit, long before any of us were born. Labeling each other only deepens divisions, emphasizing differences instead of our shared humanity. It's crucial to teach young people the realities of how the world works, arming them with knowledge to navigate and challenge these systems. Voting for elite, privately-educated candidates often results in empty promises and continued dissatisfaction. The political system was shaped by the upper class, for their own benefit, and it is primarily them who continue to benefit from it. Immigrants, fleeing from countries devastated by powerful nations, are marginalized and forced to seek refuge in those very same nations responsible for their plight. These flaws highlight the urgent need for systemic change to truly serve all people.
I don’t criticise my country’s colonial, racist, exploitative past and present because I *hate* my country; I do it because I love it and want it to be better than it is. We have so much potential to be a good and loving land, with so many beautiful hearts and souls - and it’s sidelined by corrupting money and sickly power.
Except it’s all we hear about and that’s dangerous. It’s dangerous because the British empire was also the most progressive empire in history and played a large part in giving birth to the modern world. Including the western liberal values underpinning it. It’s dangerous because when faced with a confident but oppressive ideology vs an apologetic and embarrassed country, which do you think is going to win out because one will. Power abhors a vacuum. You will end up destroying our country. You are causing moral confusion all round. Not only among young Muslims but also uneducated people on the right like those expelled from Reform for praising the Blackshirts. Because here’s the thing. If you’re going to label the man who got our country to stand up to fascism a white supremacist, attack his statue and in general misrepresent our history, then don’t be too surprised if there are folks asking which side we should have been on. Thankfully they’re still rare as I find them repugnant but you should understand that the harder the left push the culture war, the harder the right will push back and there is such a thing as unintended consequences.
We owe these people who came here after WW2 not just our thanks, but also the right to live decently, safely and with security in the UK with no questions over their status as British citizens. As a country in the 21st century, we can and should be better than our past which is frankly of little credit to us much of the time. We are more than capable of building a worthwhile multinational country that will be home to those we brought here, invited here and permitted to settle here in addition to ourselves. It's about time we built that country.
God bless this man. God bless British citizens inside and outside the UK and everyone who will remind the others what is wrong. And damn the bastards who want us to shut up and ‘get over it’.
Yes you are correct Mr Sidney but it is never taught in schools. If it was there would be much less racism and more understanding of what the people from the colonies did for the UK. Education is the key to everything. I hope you live well beyond 90 and continue to enjoy life.
We should be taking care of our own people, these are our own people. Our government should be ashamed and the next government needs to sort this out right away

Teach this history in schools!
Thank you for your service
I couldn't agree more! We need to change the curriculum .. potato famine being one ... x
Love this channel, keep on going
I think Netflix should commission a film about both the Windrush generation & Grenville towers as they did with the Post Office scandle and perhaps something would get done.
Windrush and it's consequences have been a disaster for this country.
Thank you for your service Squadron Leader
Corruption in this country is unbelievable.
With him arriving, it certainly spiralled out of Ctrl 🚨
If you find it "unbelievable" consider that the fault is with you and your own naivety. Britain is in fact the 19th least corrupt country in the world, on a scale that runs to 178 nations, ie. there are 159 countries more corrupt.

We do need better schools and education.
Are you listening Starmer? Get it sorted!
Well said, sir. Windrush is a National disgrace. You are owed so much better and so much more.
I have high hopes for Starmer; I hope his is better than the last few we have had.
Great content as usual.
Articulate and eloquent, spot on
It's important to remember he was a British subject at birth, and arrived to England as a British national.
Thank you sir for your service 🙏🏽🇬🇧🇮🇳
This absolutely sickens me. Good enough to fight for this country and this is how the people of the country treated you 😢
Not "the people" - just some of them. Most are decent, caring human beings with a social conscience - the rest are Tory/Reform/BNP fanboys...
@@kenj9181 sorry I meant to say "some of the people".
Lovely man. Great video. Here’s hoping……
Great content as always LBD. Thank you.

Support Justice4Windrush .. please don't feel ashamed, share the momentum to create change. Stop it. There’s two sides to this story. There are a lot of dangerous people here who don’t appreciate your shame - they see it as weakness and play on it. We need a system that is fair, consistent and effective.
Thank you, Sir, and thank you Led By Donkeys for making this video.
thank you, great video
A truly tragic and scandalous history...
Makes me hopeful to see resistance to the abnormal, cancerous growth of xenophobia in this country.
Never forget.
I don’t criticise my country’s colonial, racist, exploitative past and present because I *hate* my country; I do it because I love it and want it to be better than it is. We have so much potential to be a good and loving land, with so many beautiful hearts and souls - and it’s sidelined by corrupting money and sickly power.
great comment x
You sound very confused
@@noramartin96 you sound like you didn’t understand what I said; that’s most probably the problem.
past? your country is a blemish to humanity contemporarily
I am so sorry for how you have been treated. It is a national disgrace.
I agree wholeheartedly.
What a great man despite our government.
Thank you Sidney
God bless this man. God bless British citizens inside and outside the UK and everyone who will remind the others what is wrong.
And damn the bastards who want us to shut up and ‘get over it’.
Yes you are correct Mr Sidney but it is never taught in schools. If it was there would be much less racism and more understanding of what the people from the colonies did for the UK. Education is the key to everything. I hope you live well beyond 90 and continue to enjoy life.
