- I decided to do a campus tour of Deakin University in Melbourne as I've been getting a few requests from people wondering where on earth I've been lately! Spoiler alert, this is it!

Any tips for Americans going to Australia? Deakin is my first choice.
I'd say maybe most importantly just go there with an open mind and be ready to have a lot of fun! I didn't find Australia to be that much different from California, but people are way friendlier and more laid back in Melbourne. The social scene at Deakin is a bit different from that of a US college campus, so it might require a bit more effort to find your people, but once you do it's chill! There are also a ton of clubs and teams you can join, which is a great way to meet people! I say if you're thinking about going, do it! It's a lot of fun!
Also, if you do end up going to Deakin, join the study abroad club!! It's like $5 for the entire semester (so way cheap) and they have a ton of fun events every week! We did bar hopping, footy games, party boats, you name it!

1. how are the resources at deakin?
2. are the teachers good?
3. do you feel welcome there?
4. any cons to deakin?
Hey! Thank you! :) The resources are great, but I didn’t utilize anywhere near all of them, so I wouldn’t be able to describe them in detail to you. They have a lot of resources to help you succeed in your academics such as tutoring and stuff like that, and I noticed a lot of resources in terms of helping students find jobs or join a social club etc! I didn’t feel like anything was missing while I was there! The teachers are really good, but prepare to study to keep up in class! I’m used to the school system in California where I can afford to slack off every now and then, but at Deakin that somewhat backfired for me! Just get into good study habits from the start and you’ll be fine. Teachers are friendly and available to help you, depending on the class size of course! I felt very welcome. I joined a sport my first week there, and I made friends with other exchange students and my roommates. Honestly I don’t think I can come up with many cons! The only thing I struggled with was the fact that I had to do a lot of reading on my own, but that’s on me! :) I had a great time at Deakin, I would absolutely recommend it!

Thank you! I live in the dorms. There are different room types, I lived in a shared 6-person apartment, but everyone has their own room!
Thilde Fredriksen it's great, I'm going to study on Burwood campus next year on March and I'm so confused that I should stay on campus or not, is there any curfew time ?
There’s no curfew, you have a keycard that unlocks the door to the building, the apartment, and your room! You can’t have visitors past 11pm during exam week, but other than that you’re free to do what you want!

Hello :3 I was just wondering cause umm i might be studying there doing the July intake since im 17 and im a lil yknow terrified of living there alone since my family's in Malaysia, are the people in Deakin friendly as well as the teachers?
Ah that’s awesome! In my experience, yes - the teachers and people in general at Deakin and the area around are really nice! I didn’t have too much contact with my lecturers, but one of them was really cool and super funny. I don’t think that’ll be a problem at all, people are super chill in Australia and very nice and approachable! You’ll be fine, I’m sure! A lot of people are there living alone for the first time, so you won’t be alone for sure!

Is Australia crazy in partying like us ?
Hey! From my experience it depends on the people you hang out with and what campus organizations you're part of! If you'd like it to be you can certainly find the crowd, but they don't have typical frat-parties to the same extent! From what I experienced people usually pre-gamed at someone's house and then went out to a club or a bar, but I heard about many clubs on campus who threw pretty great parties, so you just need to find them ;)

What kind of room are you living in? Are you sharing with other people or is that your own room. I wanna live on res but idk if i should get a single room or a suite and share with other people~
I lived in a shared apartment with 5 other people, but everyone gets their own room! We share the kitchen, living room and bathroom but that’s it. I hardly saw some of my roommates while others hung around a lot! If you don’t need a single room for whatever reason I would absolutely recommend the shared apartments! It’s a lot more social and a quick way to make friends if you’re new to the school! Besides I’m pretty sure the single rooms are insanely small, but I’m sure it’s not as small as it looked in the pictures. Good luck anyway! Res is really fun! :) Just beware of fire alarms lol

Hahaha, that's a good one! I filmed this over break, so there weren't too many people. It's usually pretty crowded, depending on the day! It's not always like this!!

Hey! Thank you so much! 😊 That’s exciting, I hope that goes well for you! Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with that field, and I don’t have any friends studying that either so I won’t be much help there unfortunately.. I would recommend talking to an advisor from Deakin and ask, but overall I think a degree from Deakin gives you good career prospects in general regardless of what field you study, it’s a good school! Best of luck!

Hey! Thank you! ✨😊 I only came in as an exchange student so we didn’t have to do anything but submit our grades, but I’m fairly sure there’s no essays or anything like that! 😊 There may be exceptions for specific majors but in general I think all you have to do is submit your grades and hope for the best! I don’t know anyone who had to submit anything extra, and I knew quite a few undergrads from different majors. Best of luck!

Australia doesn't have any qualifying exam or essays for an UG (except maybe for some of the biomed/med degrees at Melbourne uni or at UNSW) - entry into an UG is based of our ATAR score (or if you're from overseas, you're equivalent highschool finishing score/GPA)

Can an international student defer it's semester and how many holidays do we get every semester
Hey! I’m actually not sure about that but I would assume it’s possible one way or another! I recommend asking the school directly! As for holidays I think it depends on what trimester you’re in, for me we had a week off in august and then a week off before final exams.
Whats the other accomodation like? are there any others that you would recommend? especially being on a budget
Are you thinking off campus accommodation? I’d say it honestly just depends on where you want to live, whether or not you wanna live closer to Melbourne or closer to school! Either way the tram will take you where you need to go! As for on campus, there are different types of apartments. I lived in a shared apartment with 6 people, which I think is the cheapest option. Other options are apartments with 4 people, 2, and one person apartments. It’s more expensive the fewer people live with you, but I’d say overall the price of an off campus apartment and the cheapest on campus apartments are pretty much the same! You might save a little by living off campus, but it won’t be a huge amount! Hope this helps :) Also for budgeting a HUGE part of your budget will be food, so I’d say be smart with your grocery shopping if you’re in a budget!

Yes you have to have a membership, I believe the monthly fee was about $10/week, but I could be wrong! It’s cheaper than other gyms though in terms of the benefits you have included in your membership!
Hey I saw in a reply to a comment you had mentioned the study abroad club. I am a current Deakin student but have been looking for a proper club to join. I am an international student so do you suppose I would fit in with the study abroad club?
Hey! Yeah, I would highly recommend it! It’s great, and they had a ton of fun events! I don’t think it’ll be a problem that you’re not exactly “studying abroad”, but I would ask them just in case! More likely than not they’ll be fine with it, after all it’s more members joining the fun! 😊 As long as they’re cool with you being an international student you’ll fit in just fine!

I lived in res, so I don't know too much about apartments and stuff, but a lot of my friends rented an airbnb either for the full duration of their stay or for the first few weeks until they could find something!
How was your transition from American culture to Australian culture?
It was fairly easy for me as I didn’t really experience much of a difference and I transition to new situations fairly quickly. However I would assume it’s different depending on what state you’re from. I lived in California so for me Melbourne was pretty similar both in terms of how people acted and the place itself, but that’s just my experience! Australians are really open minded and friendly, and the people I met were really inclusive! I think the US and Australia are fairly similar in many ways, so hopefully you won’t find it too hard :)

There are no hostels, but there is student housing that you can rent out for the trimester if you attend Deakin! 😊
