CT I know the pain I’m restoring my 1949 Ferguson TEA20 and this bolts do not come off I have to cut them off 😂👍🏻
God bless you in this project
I liked workshop.where do you live? What state.
Sorry for asking
Parts of vehicle haven't seen the light of day since they were in the factory.I glad it's you ,I'd have given up long before, probably when brought it home.
Yes, I don't know why but I really enjoy working on these old cars and trucks! The more rust, dirt and greese the better! =) Hang in there with me! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!

This gear box need some mantenance, new boots and fresh oil.
This was a pain to watch in a way. I was shouting at the screen you will snap them bolts as you were tightening instead of loosening. Then when you were trying to remove the gearbox, I was telling you the hand brake cable needs to be undone, but you wasnt listening. Must have had rust in your ears. lol.
I admire you doing this all on your own. You remind me of me when I was younger. I used to remove engines and gearboxes and replace them all on my own and wouldnt ask for help. I trusted my own work on cars and nobody elses. Great video, but a pain to watch you struggle at times. :). Keep up the good work. It will all be worth it in the end.
Thanks Ian! I hear you man! Learning as I go and having a blast doing it! I thought I heard someone yelling at me! I just thought it was my wife again! =) Stay tuned for more!
does this really know with he s. doing that was painful watch
Hey Dave, I'm pretty sure he has no idea what he's doing! =)
Same here.

enjoyed the birds singing in the background...nice change from the usual guitar rock in most vids....zen and the art of VW maintenance. also, the dreaded 'can we talk?'
Thanks Steve! Yes, it was a beautiful day! Thank you! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
Around 20.05, when you were taking off the starter cable, I could see asbestos dust fly each time you hit the heater duct. BE CARIFUL WORKING ON OLD STUFF! Thanks for the videos
Carl Burgess - i was worried about that too, but wasnt sure whether it was asbestos or not, but anything that looks flaky white on that age of vehicle needs to be avoided. I see a lot of you g men dont wear masks or lift stuff without thinking. I wish i had worn masks and not lifted quite so much stuff when I was a youngster.
It’s not asbestos. Its a fiberglass like nomex.
And I also appreciate this video without full edit with all the struggles! Just like many people watching your channel you learn and get better by doing it! It pays to be a bit meticulous with what you are doing. Don’t be afraid to “take a step back” if it is fighting you. On my Singlecab the other week I tried to make things easy by installing a “D” bolt on the Starter. Didn’t chase the threads before installing and it was galled up halfway. We barely got it out again. Had to call in backup and it was a bear! Thought we would need a Dremel and cut off wheel to remove that bolt. Needless to say I chased the original hex bolt and nut and threw a few wraps of electrical tape on it to make it hold in the trans for a one person engine installation. About five minutes of my time would have saved a few hours of fiddling with the thing.
That's good to know! I thought I read that on the Samba a few weeks back.
Thanks man! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hear you. It's easy to get in a hurry and mess something up! Stay tuned! =)
Put jack stands under the frame on each side to support the body, then lower the transmission with the jack to slide out from the bottom, don't depend on just the jack, very unsafe.
take your time, you are doing good, I enjoy the videos.
Thanks Tom! Good tip! I really appreciate that! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
Spray the PB Blaster a couple of times per day a few days in advance. Much less effort that way. Righty tighty and lefty loosie - say it 100 times. Don't give up. a project for sure.
Thanks Mark! great tip! =) THANK YOU!!! Stay tuned for more! =)
@@CTmoog out of curiosity, do you not say "righty tighty, lefty loosie" in your head, is this the first time you have heard it?
Nice video
Hey CT. I was wondering what you are doing with the nuts, bolts and other parts? I used freezer bags that have the spot you can write on with a sharpie to put things in when I was working on a similar project. On projects like this, it's not unusual for a year or more to go by before you are ready to reassemble. So the better you are at carefully bagging things, the easier your job is when it comes time to reassemble. One other thing... don't feel the need to speed up the video too much. Only when you are doing something repetitive. We won't get bored.
Thanks Rick! I appreciate that! Good tip! I need to but some bags! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!

YES!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
What are you going to do with the trans? You should have just left it in until you had a chance to drive it to see if it needed repair.

Given your going to rebuild this van why not save a lot of time and effort and simply chop thru all the brake lines. Surely you don't intend re-using any of them.
This is true Rod. I like to preserve as much as possible for reference purposes. Like laying the old line next to the new one to make sure it's the same size and all. THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
CT, welcome to Hawaii.
I have a 1967 bus and am in exactly the same situation.
Nice music.
The Mrs CT appearance and protest was epic. Behind every good man is a strong woman....and she didn’t say when am I getting my garage back and when are you building that greenhouse! Great video and continued success and lasting relationship

When I saw your video, I remembered when I went through the same difficulties, dismounting for the first time. The funny thing is that I forgot that the video is not live, and even if it was there is no audio transmission between my house and yours. Even so, I kept telling you what you were forgetting to pick up and hoping you would find out what was missing.
Thanks Vitor! I'm glad I can bring back good times for you! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
Thank you! And I thank you because I'm currently doing the same thing to my bus and have given up SO MANY TIMES over the last 2 years!!! I typically say a few curse words, walk away, give it a day or so, watch a few youtube videos like this & then get back on it. So thank you for continued inspiration!
Keep it up man! You can do it! One day at time! It might takes a few years! Its the journey and learning along the way that matters! =)
How far are you going on Rusty's restoration? At first I thought all you were going to do was make sure the running gear was good, patch the big rust holes and be done.
But the more I watch it looks like you are going to do a full restoration which I think is great. If you are doing a full resto I would pull the frame and have it media blasted, the same with the body and seal them both. Actually I think I would do that to both just to make it much easier to work on and restore.
Hey Fred! I'm going to repair all the mechanical parts first! Transmission, brakes, engine, etc...and I will replace all the really bad rusted out panels. Keeping it Rusty for now! =)
Fred..Media blast what? thin air? Im besides myself with mirth at the thought and site of him welding that new metal to.....el rustolaro...with mythic flux magic and mad metal bending skills, his wife better start combing the swap meets for a welders helmet with a flaming mad woody wood pecker sticker on the front of it for our viewing pleasure when he gits to the metal resto part of this next year as he's way over his head in engine /trans axal tom foolery to keep us VW know all's in sticthes for the rest of this year!
My wife fusses at me about my choices for my "garage wardrobe." I now have an agreed upon group of shirts that I wear while working in the garage or in the yard. :) I am glad to see that you used large amounts of PB Blaster. PB is your friend with projects like this bus. The bus is coming along nicely.
Hey Brad! I always end up wearing my good closes out to the garage thinking I'm just going to go look at something and the next you know I'm pulling out the transmission! Gotta love the PB! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!

VW are german noth British where left turning threads where common on vehicles. Do you failed in geography? wink
Need to invest in some more tools. Line wrenches for brake lines, 6 point sockets will get a better grip on stubborn nuts and bolts, and a ballpeen hammer. The carpentry hammer is for pounding nails not metal or steel. Just My 2 cents.
Good advice Brian! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more! Please Subscribe and click the bell!!!

I'm 1/4 of the way the a the moment. The part with Mrs. CT cracked me up. I'm sure u will pay for that! Hehe
Well done CT, this takes me back over 30 years when I struggled, just like you, with my 1959 VW camper, Can I suggest a few things which I know will make your journey a lot easier :- a Haynes manual (cheap on Ebay), a set of ratchet wrenches, a special brake line wrench and a comfortable crawl board-----treat yourself ! Best regards from the Emerald Isle.
Thanks man! Great info! I will do all of those! Stay tuned!!! =)
start looking for the big nut axles and reduction boxes. they are out there. Look on the samba. Those small nuts have way too low gears for todays roads. Unless your gonna slamb that sucker. then look for some long axles (68 bug or type 3). But You will be investing about 4 grand on stuff to slamb it FYI. Brake upgrades, spring plates. narrow front beam for brake clearance. Plus in most cases cannot run stock rims. you can lower 4 inches no problem with reduction boxes FYI and it rides nice cheap.
Interesting....I was planning on keeping it stock for now. Maybe remove the gear reduction at some point.
@@CTmoog OK then look for some big nuts. it is the best gear combo for 40hp with power up mods. Then it will drive at decent speeds. like 60-65 otherwise your looking at 55 max.
Is there a thread on The Samba that talks about this? Can you send me a link? I've never done this before so any help is much appreciated! Thanks Mike!

It was broken "snapped" at some point along with the transmission mounts.

I'm sure the next bird you hear around youre home will be a cuckoo lol 🤪that starter motor will come up like new with a sand blast and spray pay paint.the brake spray doesn't seem to make a lot of impression i use a product called gunk and it's a great degreaser brush on or spray we use it a lot in the UK so assume you can buy it at the automotive shop.rusty is old and stubborn and a typical woman don't tell the wife. look forward to the next exiting instalment. 👍

Hi There CT from Michael glad to watch your work. MAC VW411
Thanks Michael! I really appreciate that! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
it's really easy to strip out the threads in the Reduction boxes when you go to put them back in, i know it's a long ways away but becareful. when you line up the spring plates the put tension on the bolts and can miss-align and strip the RGBs. Also use anti-Seize on every bolt you put back on! :)
And torque everything to spec! Since SOMEBODY didn’t do that on my reduction boxes and well...that ends badly😂
Good to know Matt! Thanks for your advice! =) I might just put regular axles on for now. Not sure yet.
Oh sorry to hear that Marci! Yes I will...

Reduction gear axles! Haven't seen anything like that in years. What's the plan for those? Back in the day everyone building an EMPI buggy wanted those.
Im not sure yet. I might use them for a while and see how it feels. I know if you want to get highway speed they need to be replaced with the standard axles.THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!

CT looking forward to it. I completed my welding on the back deck of my bus. I should have video completed and uploaded in the next couple days. It’s all baby steps.
I'd like to ask if you let go of the cushion on the gait bar before pulling the gearbox. This part is released from the inside of the vehicle in the center of the rear of the chassis by removing a small metal cap, secured by two small screws. This bushing is also secured by two screws: One fastens the side of the gearbox, and the other, the side of the lever. If you have not released the part, before removing the gearbox from the place, you must have ripped the rubber, just as it did with the support cushion of that gearbox.
I have put below a link of the part to which I referred in the text above, for better understanding.
