Thank you! And I thank you because I'm currently doing the same thing to my bus and have given up SO MANY TIMES over the last 2 years!!! I typically say a few curse words, walk away, give it a day or so, watch a few youtube videos like this & then get back on it. So thank you for continued inspiration!

Hey, you have a very lovely wife that seems very patient of your hobby. I appreciate her kindness as you video your progress. I also enjoy the music at the end. I can only imagine how patient you must be.
CT looking forward to it. I completed my welding on the back deck of my bus. I should have video completed and uploaded in the next couple days. It’s all baby steps.
I’ve done the left to right thing a few times , tightening stuff up when i am trying to loosen it! The relief always outweighs the embarrasment. Good work. Thanks for posting.
This was a pain to watch in a way. I was shouting at the screen you will snap them bolts as you were tightening instead of loosening. Then when you were trying to remove the gearbox, I was telling you the hand brake cable needs to be undone, but you wasnt listening. Must have had rust in your ears. lol. I admire you doing this all on your own. You remind me of me when I was younger. I used to remove engines and gearboxes and replace them all on my own and wouldnt ask for help. I trusted my own work on cars and nobody elses. Great video, but a pain to watch you struggle at times. :). Keep up the good work. It will all be worth it in the end.
Thanks Ian! I hear you man! Learning as I go and having a blast doing it! I thought I heard someone yelling at me! I just thought it was my wife again! =) Stay tuned for more!
Around 20.05, when you were taking off the starter cable, I could see asbestos dust fly each time you hit the heater duct. BE CARIFUL WORKING ON OLD STUFF! Thanks for the videos
Carl Burgess - i was worried about that too, but wasnt sure whether it was asbestos or not, but anything that looks flaky white on that age of vehicle needs to be avoided. I see a lot of you g men dont wear masks or lift stuff without thinking. I wish i had worn masks and not lifted quite so much stuff when I was a youngster.
And I also appreciate this video without full edit with all the struggles! Just like many people watching your channel you learn and get better by doing it! It pays to be a bit meticulous with what you are doing. Don’t be afraid to “take a step back” if it is fighting you. On my Singlecab the other week I tried to make things easy by installing a “D” bolt on the Starter. Didn’t chase the threads before installing and it was galled up halfway. We barely got it out again. Had to call in backup and it was a bear! Thought we would need a Dremel and cut off wheel to remove that bolt. Needless to say I chased the original hex bolt and nut and threw a few wraps of electrical tape on it to make it hold in the trans for a one person engine installation. About five minutes of my time would have saved a few hours of fiddling with the thing.
My wife fusses at me about my choices for my "garage wardrobe." I now have an agreed upon group of shirts that I wear while working in the garage or in the yard. :) I am glad to see that you used large amounts of PB Blaster. PB is your friend with projects like this bus. The bus is coming along nicely.
Hey Brad! I always end up wearing my good closes out to the garage thinking I'm just going to go look at something and the next you know I'm pulling out the transmission! Gotta love the PB! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!
Yes, keep on fighting all the bolts. A hard work well done. Very interesting the gear reduction at the wheel hub. Greetings from rusty's home in germany.
Hey CT. I was wondering what you are doing with the nuts, bolts and other parts? I used freezer bags that have the spot you can write on with a sharpie to put things in when I was working on a similar project. On projects like this, it's not unusual for a year or more to go by before you are ready to reassemble. So the better you are at carefully bagging things, the easier your job is when it comes time to reassemble. One other thing... don't feel the need to speed up the video too much. Only when you are doing something repetitive. We won't get bored.
Nuts, turn right to tight, and turn left to undo!!I was screaming at you(Your are goint to break that bolt. Its ok your are doing good.So many years, those bolts are not rusted.Amazing.
Well done CT, this takes me back over 30 years when I struggled, just like you, with my 1959 VW camper, Can I suggest a few things which I know will make your journey a lot easier :- a Haynes manual (cheap on Ebay), a set of ratchet wrenches, a special brake line wrench and a comfortable crawl board-----treat yourself ! Best regards from the Emerald Isle.
Parts of vehicle haven't seen the light of day since they were in the factory.I glad it's you ,I'd have given up long before, probably when brought it home.
Yes, I don't know why but I really enjoy working on these old cars and trucks! The more rust, dirt and greese the better! =) Hang in there with me! THANK YOU!!! =) Stay tuned for more!

When I saw your video, I remembered when I went through the same difficulties, dismounting for the first time. The funny thing is that I forgot that the video is not live, and even if it was there is no audio transmission between my house and yours. Even so, I kept telling you what you were forgetting to pick up and hoping you would find out what was missing.
Must say that you are a patient man CT. I usually become creatively descriptive after skinning my knuckles. I also have a tendancy to throw sockets, 10mm ones! Love ya work. Cheers Tony (Down under).
@@CTmoog Yes, as soon as I came home I watched your video! :) That trans was a bit stubborn and didn't want to leave heh :) Looking forward to the next video!
Keep up the hard work, CT! Anything worth having is worth working for. You’ll have something to be proud of when you’re done! BTW, get some ratchet wrenches (Gearwrench). You’ll wonder how you ever got along without them! Really save time and effort. Also, a set of metric line wrenches will really help with those brake lines.
Put jack stands under the frame on each side to support the body, then lower the transmission with the jack to slide out from the bottom, don't depend on just the jack, very unsafe. take your time, you are doing good, I enjoy the videos.

it's really easy to strip out the threads in the Reduction boxes when you go to put them back in, i know it's a long ways away but becareful. when you line up the spring plates the put tension on the bolts and can miss-align and strip the RGBs. Also use anti-Seize on every bolt you put back on! :)

Swing axle transmission is definitely easier with two people.... wait till you have to put it back in lol IRS transmission are a lot easier for one person. Like the way you document everything, great attention to detail.

Spray the PB Blaster a couple of times per day a few days in advance. Much less effort that way. Righty tighty and lefty loosie - say it 100 times. Don't give up. a project for sure.
Now that the transmission and broken axle is out it's time for Wolfburg West to give you another present. Also I rememberd me immediately to my last comment in 10:44 xD
start looking for the big nut axles and reduction boxes. they are out there. Look on the samba. Those small nuts have way too low gears for todays roads. Unless your gonna slamb that sucker. then look for some long axles (68 bug or type 3). But You will be investing about 4 grand on stuff to slamb it FYI. Brake upgrades, spring plates. narrow front beam for brake clearance. Plus in most cases cannot run stock rims. you can lower 4 inches no problem with reduction boxes FYI and it rides nice cheap.
@@CTmoog OK then look for some big nuts. it is the best gear combo for 40hp with power up mods. Then it will drive at decent speeds. like 60-65 otherwise your looking at 55 max.
Is there a thread on The Samba that talks about this? Can you send me a link? I've never done this before so any help is much appreciated! Thanks Mike!

What are you going to do with the trans? You should have just left it in until you had a chance to drive it to see if it needed repair.
The transmission mounts and gear lineage is broken. I had to pull it out so I could replace them. Stay tuned! =)

Spray the PB Blaster a couple of times per day a few days in advance. Much less effort that way. Righty tighty and lefty loosie - say it 100 times. Don't give up. a project for sure.

@@CTmoog out of curiosity, do you not say "righty tighty, lefty loosie" in your head, is this the first time you have heard it?

start looking for the big nut axles and reduction boxes. they are out there.
Interesting....I was planning on keeping it stock for now. Maybe remove the gear reduction at some point.
