Dissolving a pure gold bar in acid

- What I have here is 100g of pure gold, and at around $57 US per gram, it's worth about $5700. It's one of the most expensive, and precious things that I own, but I think I'm just gonna destroy it using acid.
WARNING: Aqua Regia is an extremely corrosive mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. It was handled in a controlled environment and it's very dangerous if used improperly.

Fun fact, when Germany invaded Denmark in 1940, George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck to prevent the Nazis from taking them. He just left it in a bottle on a shelf hoping it would remain undisturbed, and then after the war, he got the gold out of the acid, and the Nobel Society recast Franck and von Laue's awards from the original gold.
Could have just bury it. Was he a chemist or something?

For people who don't know about this thing .. A combination of HCl(Hydrochloric acid) and H2NO3 (nitric acid) is called aqua regia that is used to dissolve gold. Its a common practice Ong gold Smiths who shaped pure gold into ornaments and wearables:)
Nitric acid is HNO3 not H2NO3, the latter is nitrooxonium
🤓
It's royal water
@@Anti_Septikum"aqua regia" = royal water
@@Astromath no shit Sherlock
Chloroauric acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H[AuCl4]. It forms hydrates H[AuCl4]·nH2O. Both the trihydrate and tetrahydrate are known. Both are orange-yellow solids consisting of the planar [AuCl4]− anion. Often chloroauric acid is handled as a solution, such as those obtained by dissolution of gold in aqua regia. These solutions can be converted to other gold complexes or reduced to metallic gold or gold nanoparticles.
Chloroauric acid is produced by dissolving gold in aqua regia (a mixture of concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids) followed by careful evaporation of the solution:
Au(s) + HNO3(aq) + 4 HCl(aq) → H[AuCl4](aq) + NO(g) + 2 H2O(l)
- Wikipedia
It was aqua regia 3 parts of conc. HCL and 1 part of conc. Nitric acid which can dissolve royal metals
As an additional fun fact, the traditional and common name for the mix of Hydrochloric and Nitric acid used to turn the gold into Chloroauric acid is referred to as ‘aqua regia’, or literally ‘royal water’. Aqua regia can also react with other precious metals such as silver and platinum, but curiously, silver doesn’t dissolve as well as the other metals, in part because it forms a protective layer of silver chloride during the reaction which blocks more of the aqua regia from reaching the metal underneath.
Interesting. I heard about the aqua regia (here we call of água régia) and the interaction with the gold. But with the silver I've never expecting it. Could this reaction, which occurred in the aqua regia + nitric acid, have some kind of anti-corrosive mechanism such as passivation?
Pff we were taught that in 9th grade 😏
However silver can also be dissolved in other acids, including plain HCl(aq) (hydrochloric acid) as silver oxidizes rather easy, gold on the other had needs an oxidizing acid such as nitric acid added.
I forgot to add, as you mentioned with the aqua regia, in HCl you need to remove the layer of AgCl in order to keep the reaction going.
