Your knowledge and ability to work that engine is impressive, and it never hurts to have a skilled father with a machine shop. Great video, thanks.

GKF Great video. I am sorry that you have peaked my interest more into your Dad's past and that shop, it looks like a old farm shop. Maybe we can get you to do a video on your Dad and your shop. Thanks.

Thanks Robert.. good idea! The guy is a genius in his element. He has certainly worked on a pretty fair share of farm equipment. He is an old school machinist and specializes in hydraulic repair. But I've seen him do everything from rebuilding big diesel truck engines, to manufacturing parts for small businesses, custom mounting lawn mower engines, building wood splitters down to rebuilding floor jacks etc. Not much he can't figure out in the mechanical world! I'll keep that in mind, a shop tour could be fun. He has some pretty wild old machinery in there.

@@GravityKnightFlying Thanks, yes you can tell watching him working on an airplane engine probably for the first time, he is a genius. It would just make a great non-flying video log of him and his history. Just watching you could tell he is a master of everything mechanical. Thanks.

Hell, I'm not just learning about engines, I'm learning fancy new words, it doesn't rain round here until November, I'm saving that one...

@@GravityKnightFlying Not just that, but Jim is a great assistant as well. When you said..."We used two small screwdrivers to open this lock", he was doing quite a professional job of showing the tools used...just like Vanna White!
      I reckon he's a keeper!

Thank you so much please keep up the detailed videos my motor has been setting in storage for 5 years and I’m going to have to go through it and check everything out and replace any corroded parts so these videos are super helpful thanks again and good luck

As a side note, I didn't show the application of anti-seize on several parts, like the bearing surface of the prop shaft before pressing it into the bearing, splines etc. The book calls for putting it on everything... I put it on everything that has movement or rubbing potential, and on the above mentioned areas. Just wanted to point out this as the video didn't show any of this, and I didn't mention it. Also, always lube any of the seals like the one in the end of the housing before pushing anything through it! Oh, and one more thing... Edge has better prices on the needed Rotax tools vs. buying the Rotax stuff that is way overpriced! Give them a look if you are needing to do some of this kind of work: shop.edgeperformance.no/en/29-verktoy-testustyr-og-maleutstyr

The new step collar is redesigned to allow oil to be pumped between the springs onto the prop shaft splines and between the dog gears. Slots in the step collar are angled to act as a centrifugal pump.

Morning, very informative. May I suggest a tripod for the camera, that way two free hands, which would help with focusing and filming. When can you come to Tasmania and help me ?? Cheers Wiz

Just looking at my 912 ul at the gearbox. Half of the gbox is unsupported. Do they make a bracket of sorts that could mount to the gbox and the mounting on the case halves. Maybe help with the twist of the bigger prop and more hp. Barry

I had a similar thought at one point. There are some mounting holes on the block and the back of the gearbox flange. A roughly 45 degree angled brace could be made. Apparently it's not necessary at all.... but... does make a person wonder.
