    This game released when I was going through combat medic training in the army. I swear, like almost half of us bought the game and would wear the pokewalker during runs in the morning and inside our belts throughout the day.
    One day we had a surprise shakedown and after about the 5th one our sergeant found on us he started screaming what in the actual fuck is this??!! He was amused when he found out and allowed us to keep them instead of confiscating them. I finally finished my living dexes for Gens 1-5 this year (having started back in the summer of 2020 when I was unemployed, and technically in Gen 3 using FRLG and RSE to make things a bit easier) and the process of getting them into Bank was a little tedious but not overly so. The funny thing though is that Girard just can't use the Poke Transfer to complete Gen 6 National Dexes...as you need Pokemon from Gen 6 themselves to get the ultimate crowns, hehe. Good thing he won't need Bank for that though, all of the non-event Pokemon can be found in all four Gen 6 games, so he should really just complete both XY and ORAS to complete both National Dexes, IMO.

      All stupid bits aside, it’s the games specifically that don’t have “True” Natdex anymore. USUM were the last titles with every current Pokémon at the time of release, and ORAS was the last with an actual National Pokédex, BDSP doesn’t count because it’s Gen 8.
      I honestly think they should _really_ just give the promise to patch them in batches of like 10 to 20 every Month, in Gen 9, with a couple of DLC batches in between. Maybe throw us a “Every Missing Pokémon patch” for Gen 8 so we can mess around with them. In regards to Gen 8, they really dropped the ball with it, keeping the information that Gen 8 wouldn’t have every Pokémon a secret from Japan’s audience. And if they really want to keep them out for “Game Balance”, then they should have, ya know, _locked them out of Competitive modes like they do with Mythicals._ At least let us play with them in standard modes.

    I played tons of Pokeathlon during the main story to get special items and evolution stones which ended up getting me a lot of records anyway
    HGSS and the Johto experience in general is meant to be done slowly and where you take breaks from the main storyline to do stuff like this or the shiny leaf hunt or chase some roamers and during the grinding for the battle with Red I would work on the national dex and go to the battle frontier to get BP for moves/items just get a break from the grind
    Doing each task one at a time is mind numbing for that reason and the level jump to the E4 and Red are jarring for that reason, you are SUPPOSED to take your time since the world isn’t at stake or anything, and that relaxed pace built into the game is what makes it the GOAT of Pokémon games for me personally

    The best games in the Pokémon series in my opinion, hands down.
    First off, they're everything a Pokémon remake should be. They included the improvements Crystal did over base Gold/Silver such as the Eusine part of the story, and also the Dragon Master shrine, but also added a lot more. Johto Safari Zone, Battle Frontier, new legendaries... I can go on. Walking with the Pokémon themselves was also a great feature, allowing the player to actually interact with the monsters they captured (which to that point only Yellow did with Pikachu) and it also provided a nice piece of lore to the Pokémon training before Poké Balls were invented.
    The post-game in Kanto is by far the best post-game in every Pokémon game, too. It feels so good revisiting Kanto, defeating all the Gym Leaders and also Red at the end (which to this day, I believe to be the most epic battle in the entire franchise).

      Is it really the best in the series, or just the one you remember enjoying the most as a kid? Those are two different things, and I'd argue with BDSP doing so poorly, it's probably the latter.

    • @KingCyrus20
      @KingCyrus20 2 года назад +2

      @@Katie-hb8iq BDSP being bad remakes, or at least unambitious ones, has nothing to do with the quality of HGSS.
      With BDSP, Game Freak and ILCA made the poor decision to be too faithful to the originals, down to the Pokedex and art style (rather than going for a 3D recreation in the style of SwSh). The only interesting thing about those games was the improved Sinnoh Underground. Granted, Game Freak was probably more focused on Legends Arceus, but I can understand people being disappointed that a traditional Sinnoh remake didn't get as much attention as past remakes.
      HGSS went beyond being a faithful remake by including not only the Crystal storyline, but also all of the Pokemon released since Gen 2, the Battle Frontier, etc.

    • @Katie-hb8iq
      @Katie-hb8iq 2 года назад

      @@KingCyrus20 If the formula of these old games was so amazing, then BDSP would have been beloved for continuing those same mechanics and traditions, no? But it wasn't. The faithful pokemon formula was REJECTED by critics and fans. Nobody can deny this with a straight face. I think it's silly to suggest HGSS is the "best" game in the series when a game with the same mechanics, formula and traditions goes over so badly with customers. That doesn't make sense. If you're being intellectually honest, can you say that makes sense?
      If people wanted BDSP to be more like Gen 8 - and I think >50% of people probably wanted or expected that - then that is damning evidence against Gen 1-4's design - people don't want it anymore. That's also damning evidence against the old games too - they don't provide the quality people want out of a Pokemon game anymore. These games were great at the time of release, but they would score around a 6-7 out of 10 if released today.
      I can't take away how you and others feel about these games when you played them as a kid, but I can argue that they are far from the best games in the series with a modern standard being used and trying to maintain some intellectual honesty.
      You can say to add more Pokemon, change the pokedex, or add a battle tower, but it doesn't change any of the problems with these older games - not really. If you remade HGSS like BDSP, it would have went over just as well (as in, not well at all) - let's be honest.
      The white-knighting of gen 1-4 has to stop - it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Almost everything about these games has been improved. The random battles, horrible writing and character development, overly verbose text messages and confirmations, lack of quality of life, and slow battles is enough to make these games drastically inferior to the newer ones - and that's not even mentioning graphics, soundtracks and overall presentation being better too.
      Again, I want to stress, I can't take away someone's nostalgia and love for these games and what they meant to them as a kid - I wouldn't try - but the idea that Pokemon has only gotten worse since HGSS is pretty baffling. I mean, that IS what people are saying when they say, "HGSS is the best game in the series", isn't it? It's asinine - so many improvements have been made to the games since then.

    My first pokemon was Gold. I saw it at a consignment shop for 5 bucks. Figured I'd see what was so fun about Pokemon. Now 20 years later I still hold gen 2 as sacred. Gen 2 and 4 are the absolute best for me. So when HG/SS came out I had to have it. Soul Silver is everything I could want in a Pokemon game. It's absolutely perfect

    Wish Nintendo would go back to making these 2D Pokémon games, I loved playing Soulsilver/Platinum when I was a kid. Admittedly I’ve never played one of the newer ones (or own a switch) but I feel like the scale and scope of these games and iconic soundtracks would be so good together in a modern 2D Pokémon game, remake or not. It’d probably warrant me buying a switch too lol. Also gonna plug Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of time just because it’s story/soundtrack is so great

    Soul Silver was my second Pokémon game. Despite my original duo of Lava TyTy the Typholsion and Soul Siver the Lugia not beating the Elite Four, I carry them to my newer games. Them along with Blaze the Infernape and Fire the Glaceon, are one of the few surviving “child era” Pokémon from me.
    Also congratulations on getting a shiny during your play through! At some point I was replaying Soul Silver, and ran into a shiny Hoothoot in the early stages of the game. Capri is transferred up to Sword, and evolved into Noctowl. Hopefully OnlyPhans gets some fanart, because it’s beautiful.

I loved it, my lunch group had pokewalkers which made getting items easy. I also had an action replay, so I was the one people went to for getting their favorite shinies and cloning event pokemon. I went to a convention a couple months later and used my powers to get people things they wanted and actually made my first convention friends that way. I loved it so much.

    This was the first game I ever completed to 100%, while putting well over 400 hours into my edition of SoulSilver alone throughout the whole year of 2010! I just loved the Pokéathlon and all its' minigames, really missing those in modern Pokémon-Games! Having a living PokéDex for the first time, while having to deal with all the 493 mons that were present at the time, felt like quite the accomplishment back then. Especially after asking a bunch of my friends for them to lend me their editions of LeafGreen, Emerald and Pearl, so that I had with the addition of my own Platinum-Version the opportunity to 'Gotta Catch'em All', as they do say.
    But I can totally understand Jirard that it might felt tedious to complete all of the challenges the games have to offer with the goal of completion and getting the video ready as soon as possible. HeartGold and SoulSilver are games that you enjoy at your own time, maybe stop for some time, start playing other games and come back to it. So that the game never feels tedious.
    But I really have to add: I missed a mention of the PokéWalker in this video! This thing was crucial for the whole true Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver experience! You're missing out, man!

    I pre-ordered JP Soul Silver, and worked out a trade with a Poketuber who had been using Babelfish to facilitate getting 8 different Movie Arceus on a JP forum (pretty sure at the time this was the only way to get a legitimate Arceus). I also managed to get the Pikachu Colored Pichu, meaning I was able to get the gizamimi Pichu as well as the baby legendary events when I got my copy. Since the events weren't region locked, I was also letting everyone I knew who got the English copies borrow them to do the events. My collection of event stuff was pretty huge before I sold my games, I had some old ones like the 10 Anniv Latios (ID 00010), and Aura and Mystery Mew, but also a ton of the Gen 4 ones like the TRU promotions and Alamos Darkrai. I even had Hayley's Mew from Pokemon Ranch on Wii. That's not to mention my collection of Shiny and Battle Ready pokemon I had hunted and bred.
