@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm I have had difficulty with my Rhoades, not only curious they are always fussing, and I seem to getting more then a few egg eaters, My wife and I just caulled our last two, and our other birds have calmed down and egg production has shot up, any information on this?
Great questions Marten! In my experience chickens will eat their own eggs because they could be low on calcium. There are other reasons too, like they accidentally discover the egg and go after it. Which is what happens with us. But in your case it's deliberate and a lot of the time it sounds like, so you can remedy that by getting your feed that has oyster shells or limestone in it. We use Layena pellets with the oyster shells in the feed. Don't mix a calcium supplement in the feed, get one that contains oyster shells or limestone. That may be their issue. The Reds that we have are pretty docile, but these birds were bred at one time for cock fighting, so Rhode Island reds can be loud and aggressive sometimes. That's a great thing egg production went up after you caught the birds eating, that could very well be why it was down. Lots of reasons that egg production decreases, but one of the main reasons is stress with the birds. We have 2 ducks that were causing stress for them and with 25 hens we were getting 6 eggs a day, so we had to rehome the ducks, and the egg production went up. In your case sounds like when you caught the culprit the other hens stress levels went down, which is a great thing! Hope that helps, thankyou for the question and the comments.
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience with these breeds. We like Rhode Island Reds very much! We've never had Plymouth Rock hens. After watching this video, I would be willing to try raising some Plymouth Rock hens. Thanks again!
Had this video on my Watch Later list...going to feature it & recommend it on one of our videos. Well done! Keep up the great work with your chickens & your videos!
@twinoaksfarmpoultry Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed the video. We have both breeds, and absolutely love both of them. In our flock both are calm, social and good egg laying chickens. Good luck on both those breeds!
@MarkWYoung-ky4uc Hi Mark! No, I have never tried them, but would love to. Do you have any? Thank you for the question and thank you so much for watching. 🥰
Rhode Island reds do fine in our climate, which is down to 50 below. Never kept them for several years. After two seasons they go in the freezer. Always have consistent layers and never have to worry about them "slowing down".
Wow, 50 below! That is cold! Good to know they are that hardy in the cold weather! I agree with you, mine have always been consistent layers in the hot Temps here as well. Thank you for sharing that!
Many people claim Rhode island Reds are quite mean and nasty to other breeds and people. May I ask where you purchase your chicks from? You have a beautiful flock.
@kl1958 sometimes they can be, but in our experience over the last 7 yrs of raising them and others we have never had a mean one. Even our roosters are friendly. We have purchased ours from feed stores, chicken farms, and most recently we hatch our own chicks. Thank you for watching!
@@Mothercluckerschickenfarm Ok...well thank you...will need to try some with my next order...all the testamonials that you read on Murray MacMurray's website...people love them even White leghorns...maybe its where hatcheries original breeding stock started at. Thank you!
You said the Rhode Island reds are bigger and make better meat birds. Maybe I have some mutant chickens, but my Plymouth Rock was twice as big as my Rhode Island red.
Hi! Yes generally they are, but I have some Reds that are small also and have had Plymouth rocks that are quite big also. Generally they are but not always. Thank you for commenting, good to know that's not always the case with these birds.
This helps in making our decision as these are 2 breeds were thinking of. I have heard from many sources that plymouth rocks are great dual purpose birds though wnd thats what they were bred for.
So glad this helped you! We have both, and enjoy both the breeds. I haven't raised plymouth rocks for meat, just eggs, but I have learned that they are great dual purpose birds also. Thanks for watching!
Great birds add jersey giants, buff orpington, easter eggers, golden/silver wing wyandotte, copper maran, araucana,Americana,, brahma, sex link, game, calico princess, sapphire gem, hybrid F1, lake lavender and u'll have a flock like I now have . Love my feather babies ! Will have baby chics for sale soon . Breeding production into color for that beautiful colorful backyard flock no one has not even ur neighbor .
Wow! Sounds like you have 1 amazing flock, that is awesome! Bet the baby chicks will be beautiful! Thank you for sharing and I am sure you are enjoying the variety you have!
Neither! I think I have the very best homestead chickens. Crossing buff orpington roosters with black giant hens. Just my 2 cents, but they are huge, beautiful, and lay year round down here. All very friendly
Now that sounds awesome! Love buff Orpingtons, and that sounds like a good combination. Especially when they lay year round. Thank you for sharing and for watching us!
That's definately good to know, and you speak from experience living in Missouri for sure. Sorry that happened to your rooster and hens. Thank you so much for sharing that, and for watching, really appreciate it!
I have Rhoad island Reds..they have been known to live as long as 15 years..lay 300 eggs a year..they are very weather hearty and Rhoads aren't prone to every disease down the pike..and Rhodes lay up to 7 years
I think we have both! I had ordered barred rock and red sex link chickens this past spring, but now that they’re grown, I think I have Rhode Island Reds instead of sex links! They’re beautiful and mine seem very nice, not much aggression.
@primitivedaisy lol, that's a good mixup, glad you are enjoying both! Good to know yours are not aggressive. A pleasure to have around. Thank you for watching!
I love the way you broke down the differences between these birds. I learned a lot from this. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much! Glad it helped you and we appreciate you watching!

Plymouth rocks have several different colors . The barred Plymouth rock is the striped gray and white chicken or black and white.
L Smith, that's definately good to note, thank you for that added info. Appreciate it!
Your very welcome
Reds are not as cold hardy as most other breeds. Live in south Missouri, Rooster lost half his comb and many hens lost toes last winter.
