  • Here is a tutorial on how to do a free mount. This is the most basic free mount that people do when they first try to unicycle. I hope this helps anyone trying to learn how to unicycle.
    Hope you enjoy.

Yes, I agree this is the "best way" to learn free-mounting. The 6/12 o'clock or "rock back" free mount works best with our natural sense of stepping and weighting on the pedal. The unicycle will not kick out from under you. It feels "natural" to push down on your pedal with all your weight. So, now we just train our "top foot" to land and quickly pull back the pedal. Just pure repetition. Also, watch the unicycle static behavior when first "getting up". Does it twist? Do you fall to one side? Lean the opposite to counter and use your thighs and knees against the frame to control twist. When done right it feels like you get up, stall and get stable, and then go. It sounds like a lot is happening, but in reality it's not. Just the get up and land your top foot is the hardest. The rock back and forward lean happens naturally. Your body takes over. The kick back(half idle) gets you instantly in a stable leaning forward position...then you move forward gradually. With more practice you can actually stall or even "one foot" half idle
With repetition I think anyone can learn this. Versus the "so called standard' 3/9 o'clock free mount. I thought this was impossible for me at first. I hated how all the videos encouraged this method. A disservice to all beginners, except for the "supernatural" talented beginners.
The 3/9 o'clock free mount when done right "feels like" a total jump up/go single motion. It's not a two piece: Get up and then lean forward and go method. It requires a totally "unnatural" ability to put "zero down force" on your pedal, then throw your body into a forward lean, and then "somehow" catch your top pedal foot in the process. It happens so quickly. I eventually mastered this method, but only after riding the uni for awhile. Had I paid attention to all the free mount videos out there I would have been discouraged.

When I first learnt Unicycling back when I was in my mid-forties, I could never free-mount even after a few months. I seem to have formed a habit of looking like a limbless freak before I pushed myself off from the wall etc..... now I am retired, I have come back to it again. After the initial learning again, I still find it impossible to free-mount damn it....!!!! I have tried everything possible so far, but still the ungainly clamber onto the seat takes place each time. The other day, I actually did it... only the once, but it worked, thanks for the simplicity, the challenge of beating the 'wall', and success. When my injuries heal up, I will try again.... the second attempt failed miserably.....!!!

I am just learning, and I find that when you jump up you must IMMEDIATELY put both arms straight out to your sides and bend forward at the waist! This works well for me…??

Got a question. When your second foot lands on the pedal, how accurately do you place it? When I practice this free mount, half the time my foot will land shifted maybe 1/2 cm from my 'perfect' position. Do most people just let their foot wherever and ride?

It will come with practice now it’s like second nature. But when I was learning yes my foot was all over the place

@@kumba821 Thank you for the response. I practice this 'simple free mount' with one hand on a light post. This way, I can 'cheat' by shifting my foot before I let go. I will now force myself to first land accurately on the pedal.
