  • Welcome back to another "popular movie" frame challenge!
So what is considered a "popular" movie? Hey, thanks for asking!
For the purposes of this video series, I have gone through the box office numbers for the last 50ish years. For each of those years, I pulled the top 20 films. I don't think one could really argue that the highest grossing movies of the year weren't popular amongst at least some subset of the general population. That doesn't mean they're good movies. That doesn't mean they're memorable movies. It means that a lot of people paid good money to go see them.
That's why largely forgettable movies like "We're the Millers" and "Get Smart" make the cut. It's a simple numbers game. I am not the arbiter of what was popular. So yeah, there's a lot of cartoons, there's a lot of comic-book movies - my most sincere apologies to Mr. Scorsese..
So anyways, after compiling that list of the top grossing films, I went back and did another pass - trying to find the movies that had second lives in home video or other secondary markets. Because there are movies out there that are truly beloved but didn't make a DIME. Want to talk about "The Shawshank Redemption?" On the box-office list for the year it was released, it came in at #95. NINETY-FIVE. It got outgrossed by a Pauly Shore movie. So in that sense, I did exercise a little content control - I couldn't feel good knowing that there were some really excellent movies that have become truly popular that were being overlooked for some honest-to-god schlock... but then at the same time I also had to say "well, there were some pretty bad movies that didn't make a lot of money that still managed to have some level of impact on popular culture." So some of those made the cut too.
So that's where the list of movies came from. I'd say it's 90 percent box-office numbers with 10 percent where I stepped in and make editorial choices. If you have a problem with that, I don't know what I can tell you.
So the game is pretty straightforward - I show you a frame, you have around eight seconds before the title is revealed. You know the drill. I'm sure you'll know most of these, right?
Anyways, I hope you have fun with these, please subscribe for more, sorry if the ads are annoying, and leave your score in the comments. If you have criticism, please feel free to put that in a comment as well. I read 'em. I don't always agree with 'em, but I read 'em!

#7 Too Hard. Missed that one. A Motel? That could have been in a 100 different movies.

The TV on the balcony was the clue for me to get it.

That's what I was going for. I even gave it a little extra shine in Photoshop hoping it would stand out.
