- North Carolina’s 14th state park began in 1969 as Masonboro State Park w/ the state’s first expenditure for parkland since 1916. The acquisition preserved unique limestone sinks and the habitat of carnivorous plants along the Intracoastal Waterway, with the park becoming known as Carolina Beach State Park in 1974.
