DNA Colour Shift Ionic

- I had a great opportunity to "Paint Some Shit" with a highly skilled painter called Shaun Greenwell, he is a well known Custom Painter in Melbourne and has a lot of experience with DNA Custom Paints.
This colour is DNA Colour Shift Ionic and is a fairly straight forward procedure, prep work is no different to any other standard solvent based paint job, masking etc. The first stage is black basecoat until coverage is achieved then 2-4 coats of the DNA Custom Paints Colour Shift Ionic Pearl until desired effect has been reached then 2 coats of the DNA HS Diamond Clear.
The Diamond Clear clear is quite thick to start with as most HS clears are and it was a cool day so we warmed the clear up first to about 30 Celsius and added 15% reducer to help with flow.
To take a paint job like this to the next level a flow coat would be highly recommended but I've found most customers aren't willing to spend the extra to get it done, most people outside of the trade don't understand how much of a difference doing a flow coat makes and see it as a waste of time and money "When the car is already painted, why would you paint it again?"
It is up to us as the technician to do our best to explain the full benefit of doing a flow coat.
I hope you enjoy this video but why are you still reading this "Get out there and Paint Some shit!!!"
You can order any DNA Custom Paints directly from their website or through their distributors which are rapidly growing worldwide and Australia wide.

Great job Shaun, you can tell he has loads of experience and knowledge Top man, thanks Gunny for showing us
Seeing a highly skilled guy like this working is mesmerizing. He's as much of an artist as he is a car guy.
That was incredible!!!! Thanks for filming.
Nice one , man! In fact , watching Shaun going all the side at once in that 86 was epic! Thanks for sharing . Cheers Gunny :-) !
AH totally awesome ! I got some chameleon paint about a year ago while in between garages and I've been waiting for you gunny, to tread the path before I dive in...but I'm ready now. Got a new garage and project car...so stay tuned and THANKS as always ! Keep up the great work. Cheers Pete
Ha quedado precioso! Buen trabajo!
awesome every video i'm always suprised on every job you do it's always cool viewing such cool stuff and seeing things done hands on from beginning to end it's awesome thanks.
I appreciate this video very much because I am new to painting and this shows very well the technique in spraying and adjusting the air pressure as needed to suit the painter's needs or comfort zone-in so doing all goes well-at least it did go very well and all in all was very impressive all the way around both of you were fantastic and it shows
DNA paints rock ! Great job ! Thanks : )
I love seeing him walk the whole side of the car!
Nice work guys it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing
Totally amazing color and finish good work everytime cia....
Awesome painters... beautiful job Guys...
I'm a sprayer
but I don't do cars I do wood I'm a wood spraypainting specialist but your tips on gun and sanding works in my line of work aswel, I work for myself and have being spraying for 8 years, and you can never know to much 👍
Thanks mate
Spraypaint Productions hey buddy, so glad I saw your comment. I’ve been spraying for 30+ years as hobby work on the side mainly doing automotive and some truck and industrial work and absolutely love it. I have done some cabinet and door work in the past and had always used a lacquer paint and generally had good results but am real curious what type of material you spray and was wondering about some of the urethane based materials that are out now how they would do and if they might be more durable than the lacquers?
What paint and what brand do you spray for wood products and what sheen are you using? Thank you so much for the info, I truly appreciate it! Take care!
Great video guman, u guys are definitely pros. keep the videos coming gunman.
Great shooting by both, the sprayman and cameraman!!
absolutely beautiful!!
Awesome paint job.
Amazing color with all the changes in color i can imagine out in the sun :-)
Outstanding job man, loved the vid
It's amazing how watching someone else do the exact same thing as your self is so interesting lol anyone else notice this?
Hey man I'm a 15 year old that I have just gotten into Industrial Painting and I am looking it into a further job, and I love your work. I have only started watching your videos but you have inspired me already and a new subscriber 👍
Jaiwaan Singleton Geary keep at it man and invest in a good gun for yourself. If you're a refinisher I'd suggest a tekna pro lite. Perfect gun for clear and easy to shoot base and its cheap but good quality. I started bodywork at the same age as you and now I've been a prepper for 6 ish year and a painter for 2. Keep at it and don't rush paint jobs
Kunal Abraham do you use the tekna TE25 for clearcoat? What PSI do you use? And how many turns you give it for material? And how many coats of clear you apply? Wet flush off 5 minutes and wet or half wet 5 minutes off and wet?
Mate if your in Australia , you have the option to earn TOP dollar working in oil and gas / any mining as a industrial painter / blaster .
@@Iswhatitisssss I’m back three years later, I’m actually a spray painter/ panel beater now!
my favorite paint guy to watch on RUclips 🖒🖒
Nice job....love that color
SprayWayCustoms wow
the top
I have got to say...this fella really put it down. If I tried to shoot with his technique and distance from panel it would have been ruined. I also like that he was walking the entire car when putting the color on.
Also, I had the initial thought of the bumper covers positioned as if mounted but reality set in about the color shifting and ...well...duh.
Master painter, master job, really nice.
Didn't quite get what you were telling him about the hood when shooting the clear. Looked like he was really putting it down strong.
You are a gun video producer and painter mate. Keep up the good work :)
Awesome video gunny nice to see you putting ya feet up on this job 😝😝
Love that color looking good on that car
"WOW"
BEAUTIFUL
Great job!
Good video sharing. thank you very much
Mestre na pintura, vdd ninja👍👍👍
the car looks amazing. love the tips you leave and love the way you explain the job I appreciate all the info you give keep it up.
I really hope the customer forked out the money to have the car jambed. It looks really good Shawn! Thanks Gunman for the content!
Absolutely awesome
NICE PAINT JOB BRUH I LOVE IT👏👏👏👏
Good job and nice work
amazing job
I love your videos man
Gunman, it appeared to me the painter from dna was overlapping about 3/4 of the fan in wet and 1/4 in the new pass nice job, great video.
Love it Gunman. You would have hated painting the truck i just finished...the cold has been brutal for painting here in the states...idaho that is
Shit hot vid mate. Cheers to Shaun and to you gunny for doing the vid. I did a colour shift pearl not long ago using black spies hecher base, spectra fx BE32G blue emerald powdered pearl in alsa mid coat and cromax 696s clear and it came out wicked. Keep em coming mate you allways keep me inspired to "paint some more shit"👍
i love your stuff gunman! im still a shitty painter but i have gotten better from watching your vids. thanks for all the tips and tricks. hopefully i will get less shitty in the future but probably not cos i only ever paint track hack cars and its normally in a rush lol
sr20nissan 720 when you re a shitty painter,it helps to be a good detailer haha ;)
Nice job!!!!
Love the way that booth is never seen one with a full filter floor and love that iwata for clear and I have a similar style of clearing as he does but I'm short so it's in little sections and when I walk a car it looks like a small dog walking haha
Just amazing
when i had multiple supernova guns and was using the pps system id actually load 2 identical guns with clear instead of changing out the pps cups.
Usually only on a custom job of a candy job not on collision work.
And id also hold it upside down and pull the trigger till fluid came out, then the gun will spray upside down for getting rockers and bumper edges real good or id sometimes load my lph80 or minijet with pps cup and clear for rocker bottoms.
just recently picked up my own ws400 evo bit of a power house those guns not for the faint hearted lol. wicked job shaun cheers for filming gunnza
I had a evo with a 1.3 tip, that gun really throws it on there.
Wow! I wish I could afford to paint my 03 Cobra in that shift color! Similar to the Ford Mystichrome paint which cost $5K per gallon!
Very Good Painter.
I like what you said about the advertising thing,
Yes your right the advertising is the annoyance at the start of video and TV that everyone ignores or skips pst, that’s not what we’re watching for.
Too many RUclipsrs nowadays ‘sell their soul’ for a bit of free revenue or gifts
Such an amazing finish! I saw a Benz the other day that I swear was producing five different colors depending on how you looked at it. Blue, red, green, gold, yellow...Probably more than that, but that's what I could make out for sure!
Maybe it's just because we're getting a different perspective than we usually do with this video, but it looked like that clear gun was producing a lot more overspray than I see when you paint? Obviously it wasn't an issue; the car came out great! Just an observation. :)
kick ass spraying bro
Nice colour awsome
I`m amazed at how Shaun switches from left hand to right hand- *****
Ambidexterous. It's easy, just requires practice. It's also extremely handy regardless to occupation. Down side is you produce almost double then anyone else and the boss thinks you're lazy because you're not doing anything whenever he sees you.
Love watching gunman reviews
hey gunman your little mention of spray guns direct.......I like how you keep it real. ..I just some guns off them and mate they are brilliant and the service is excellent, I'm in brisbane
Honest guy, that’s good
Amazing
i like how you said "im gonna shut up" and then you talk the whole vid
He didn't talk the whole video bull shiter f.u.
Nice job.....
Awesome...
Awesome look man. Also, thanks for all the videos, I used some of your tips to paint my engine bay a month or so ago! Video on my page!
As always,,,,,,,NICE. From OHIO. USA
My favorite one so far.👍 & yes...glad to my method of painting is similar to the likes of you two. only 2yrs in I can only get better. THANKS.
que genial =)
It's a color that Joker will Love
Now I want to go paint some sh!t!!
wow that's fucking amazing man! 😲enjoyed watching this 👌
Good spray job.In the 70s worked in a car wash/garage/body shop. By no mean claiming to be an expert. 99% prep 1% paint. I liked the painters sweep on the hood. little to quick on the side.maybe didn't want to get runs. the roof I found it best to start int the middle as any horizontal panel. Now as for the mixing. 33% thinning flows like molten glass dries like glass. just my style. slow the air and gun down and watch the flow.
That is amazing!!! How hard is it to do a spot repair on this type of paint job? almost impossible?
Hello from canada
Beauty of a paint job
Im a very amature painter
Do my own work using crap paint guns and home made compressor, no water traps, filters etc
Would love to try this color on my motorcycle
Nice
Отлично брат ,,,просто классная работа,
Hi Gunman, wow am I glad I found your vids. KUDOS! for such well presented info.
Nearly everyone else takes soooo long to get to the point, but you are spot on and give just the right level and amount of advice to comprehend what you're trying to achieve. Your openness and honesty is refreshing.
Got a black car (solid colour , non metal/flake) that I want to do with the Iconic colour shift paint.
Can I ...
1) leave the clear coat on and prep sand it 400 grit, and lay down a colour shift coat series,
or 2) would I need to give it a few coats of black first.
IE: would the sanded clear coat mess up the Colour Shift , or you think that would work ?
I would definitely still apply the black, it's what helps the pearl give the multiple colours. You'll see that in some angles you can see the black flip.
cheers Gunman, 2 coats of Black it is.
hey, had a thought for masking off difficult/detailed ares...cut out a rectangle or circle paper to prevent overspray, then use a plasti-dip /silicone rubber paint type as a mask layer, then trim it up. had any experience doing it that way ( too expensive ) ?
this totally I can a futuristic color, wonderful. Would this be also great for like dark gray?
I'm pretty sure your cap pressure was over 10 psi while you were spraying the clear but screw voc regulations when you are trying to make something look good lol. Great paint job, obviously lots of skill here :)
How i wish to have my own spray paint room
gunman you guys do a awesome job when you gonna do Step by Step dvd paint job. I'll be the first to buy it
What's a DVD

loving the flip paint. Need to see more of this in the UK as like 10 years ago was all the range here love it.
gday mate, awesome videos. do u know how many litres of the dna pearl where used?
when you say the clear has been reduced or thinned. what are you reducing it with? laquer thinner, base coat reducer, or something entirely different?
base coat/clear reducer.
Matt T lacquer thinner. This lacquer uses either sc880,sc850, sc820 or speedflash s from rm.
I used didsplade riddler and house of collars inter coat as far as I can tell my car and this car almost identical I did flow coat mine auto bahn euro clear I was sceptical but not a bad clear for the price
cool
dude love your videos keep up the good work I just have one question why didn't you guys open the hood to paint it and what color is it under the hood you know like the sides interior of the fenders and underneath the hood but awesome work man love you vids
We removed all the panels first then painted that outside after putting them back on.
Tight ass masking skillz.,,
I thought you had to hang all panels as they would sit on the car, for matching colour shift?
the front spoiler is laying down.
Good
👌
WoW !

ممنون از رهنمای شما
I know this is late . and I just started watching your videos .
my question is
what black base did you use? .
and what was the mixture on the color ?
It's just a standard black base coat, non metallic solvent base.
Ask sprayguns direct for the other air cap for the Nordson ,the stock gun is an AS compliant version the other cap is the LVLP and may reduce your clear consumption and overpspray ,personally I just drop the pressure on the Air Spray version and turn the material down
What paint guns did he use for the base coat, the color shift, and the clear coat?
i painted this exact same color on my tool box!
Aron hu8 82a777
Townsville Rep!
Is it possible to do a blow in if this paint get damaged? Or do you have to don the whole panel? Or whole car?
Good car painter
How much would a paint job like this cost?
Great job!
The transparent needed to be polished in the end?
no, just clear straight over it.
How many litres of the colour shift pearl to cover the car? I only saw a 1L can?
