This made me miss calling the radio station 😢 today's youth will never know, just hearing you own voice on the radio made us hyped like we were celebrities. 😂
In this video(1985) , Leroy is 20(54 this year), Eddie 19(53 this year), Eugene 18(52 this year), Haini 17(51 this year), Rudy 16(50 this year), Kathi 15(49 this year), Elizabeth 13(47 this year), Moana 12(46 this year)
The Jets played at my high school prom, it was just like this video. Robbinsdale Armstrong High class of 1985, in Plymouth, Minnesota. It was a big deal at the time because they were getting popular as a local band. This was just before their breakthrough hit 'Crush On You' in 1986. I was pretty amazed to see them on Mtv a year later.
When I first heard this, I thought about that Minneapolis sound. You can definitely hear that Prince/Time influence on this track. It makes sense with them coming from Minneapolis.
Ryan Roberts they were originally from Tonga, their parents immigrated to the US. They traveled around performing all over, and I believe settled eventually in Minneapolis. The rest is history. 😊
Song is still funky after all these years! Such exceptional musicianship and choreography compared to the crap that they’re putting out today! I can’t believe music companies traded in excellence for mediocrity
Darryl Campbell they didn’t write or produce the songs though. The writers and producers should get a large portion of the credit. They’re the ones primarily responsible.
THIS GROUP HAD AND STILL HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE STYLE OF FUNK.....ALTHOUGH I HEAR *TINY* HINTS OF THE TIME/REVOLUTION MINNEAPOLIS SOUND IN THEIR SONGS....ESPECIALLY "CRUSH ON YOU".......
THE JETS WERE THE ITT! They could bang a dance jam and then flip you and give you ballad to feel, where is this great type of music now?? Sadly the craft of real music has fallen by the wayside, but thanks to RUclips it lives on 4 ever in our hearts and minds!!!
What happen to the Funk!! This was a funk song. This was funky as can be. The Jets had a good run along with 5 Star at the time. This really makes me appreciate the 80's even more. I remember listening to these songs back then and saying "NO era will match the 80's music". I stand by this today. You got full LP's with few fillers and many hits.
Thank you for naming 1985 which in my opinion is one of the greatest years in R & B. The music back then was special & there was so much talent back which made listening to the radio a lot of fun + you had djs back then that had class and respect for the audience.
I was leaving high school. I must admit, 1985 wasn't the most soulful year in music for the 80's, but overall popular music it was one of the best in the decade. I felt the same when I was in Jr. High for the music in 1979.
The JETTS played in my hometown at Spanos Center in Stockton, CA on the University Pacific Campus back in the 80s. When my husband was a kid got a call from a friend of his telling him that he and his cousins were in town and were going to the park to play basket ball and invited my husband to go play with them. He had no idea who the cousins were. He goes to meet his friend Ray T. and it so happens his friends cousins are the JETTS! He said they were really cool and just like a regular family! I doubt they remembered but if they did that would be so cool!
I saw The Jets perform at Disneyland when they first came out at the Carnation stage. That same night Ready for the World performed on Tom Sawyer Island and Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick performed at the Tomorrowland Terrace. They performed at different times so that everyone could see each group perform.
Loved this video brought back great memories loved their songs and music I graduated from high school 1987 I'm going to be 52 November 29 loved watching this thanks for sharing 😊💜💜
I just heard this song for the 1st time yesterday- 12/21/23, watching the episode of The Jets on "Unsung"! I like it, can't believe I didn't know this song years ago! 🎶
Loved this record! And the BRIDGE is SICK! (1:24 - 1:40) Remember when to have a song you had to have a bridge? Somebody please bring back songwriting!
Don't forget the saxophone 🎷 solo or electric guitar 🎸 solo! And I love Elizabeth's flowers and bows, so cute and feminine! God knows how they would try to dress her in 2020s if she was young today 🤨
I was only 6 or 7 when this song came out. In Charleston,sc they have the Back in the Day cafe on z93 and someone requested this song. Man, I just had a mental flashback just now watching this video. Somebody said real music will always stand the test of time and The Jets and Five Star are groups that prove it!!
I agree! Ain't nothing like the 80's! This decade had the best music EVER! It makes you want to plan to have an 80's party! And i love The Jets! This is one of my favorite songs by them. The others are Crush on You and You Got it All.
Yes! Love the funky guitars, synth bass, all of the synth arrangements, especially the piano solo...would LOVE to hear a Dirty Loops version of this song :D
I way totally agree with dlbeats!!! Today's music sucks musically and in fashion!!! They had the synths going on back then, but never did they "autotune" their voices to make themselves sound like they could sing, like Gaga, Spears, Cyrus and esp. T-Pain!!! 80s is all real and all real music!!!
The first I heard this by the Jets was on the radio. And I remember when I use to have the cassette to this song and I would always use to listen to all of their songs alot.
Man were these the days!!. They still sound good to me and was always underrated. I don’t think they knew what category to place them in cause they could have been R&B or whatever. I just know me and bestie had a good time dancing to them.
God, I really, really miss good music. Happy music, innocent music. I agree that young people today are expossed to way too much way too fast. But then again, I'm sure the parents of this day were saying the same thing.
Didn't know it was Jerry Knight of Raydio that came up with the bass part! He's known for his bass on Bill Withers' Lovely Day, and his own Overnight Sensation!
This made me miss calling the radio station 😢 today's youth will never know, just hearing you own voice on the radio made us hyped like we were celebrities. 😂
Sho you right! 😎
Omg 😭😂😂😂😂💯💯 yesssss!!
@@kanuriI know the feeling. 😊

UnSung brought me here and refreshed 33 year memories of the Jets! God I miss being a kid
NOBODY could wear and rock those Chuck Taylor's like "The Jets"...that was their trademark. Awesome family group. They put it down!!!
The Jets were so good, man. They represented the Minneapolis music scene very well. Curiosity is a funky cold jam!
This was the jam on Video Soul! Like if you remember Donnie Simpson.
Haaaaaa!! Yeah so well. Loved it!!
You ain't lying, Monique! 😃
Monique Thomas
Monique Thomas right the jam maannnn
that was my boy from the "D".If I remember he was the "Big Soul Rocker"on WCHB.My Detroiters help me out on this one
They never made a bad jam. Synergy like this is rare.
Its hard to believe that during the 80's Minnesota out of all places had the best sound!
In this video(1985) , Leroy is 20(54 this year), Eddie 19(53 this year), Eugene 18(52 this year), Haini 17(51 this year), Rudy 16(50 this year), Kathi 15(49 this year), Elizabeth 13(47 this year), Moana 12(46 this year)
1985 was one of the coolest years of my life. I wish that I can travel back to that year.
Memories..omg. I'm freaking out. It's like pre-teens all over again. I wore out my Jets cassettes.
I miss the 80s
JOIN THE CLUB!!!
EVERYONE was happy in the 80's unlike today. Even my miserable behind had good times in the 80's.
Only vinyl can preserve those moments in time
Awesome love the jets wish I could relive 80's as a teenager

MINNESOTA HAD A SOUND THAT WAS UNDENIABLE IN THE 80s... THANK U JIMMY JAM TERRY LEWIS THE REVOLUTION THE TIME WENDY & LISA THE JETS etc etc etc
uh, you forgot to thank the original creator of the Minneapolis Sound... The Purple one himself....RIP Prince
Exactly! No mention of Prince. Really???
Thanks to David Z who produced Prince's first demos who produced the Jets
@@rjackson3784 EXACTLY!....Clearly he doesn't know the real history of the Minneapolis sound because PRINCE birth every last one of them.
PRINCE, HE, influenced them ALL. 👍🏽
the jets, debarge, 5 star were some of my best family groups ever. All inspired by osmonds and the jacksons!
My first concert was The Jets. I'm very happy about that.
Love The Jets!!! I wish they'd do an Old School concert and include them in it.
When I first heard this, I thought about that Minneapolis sound. You can definitely hear that Prince/Time influence on this track. It makes sense with them coming from Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Funk..Underated.
How do you know it's underrated?
Im just realizing how many hits this group had. Did they ever get the recognition they deserved?
Not to me. They were on "Webster" once, but I think they were very underrated.
+Tiffany Waldon i definitely agree
Your 100% correct. I am now just starting to realize how many top 10 songs they had. WOW
No, but they should have. They are a great group then and now.

JusLiveMylyfe I was 12 when I got their first album! Was crazy about them!

Okay is anyone as shocked as I am that they were 12-16 years old when they made this song/video! Wow they had talent!!!!
Omg when I was 8 years old my mom used to listen to The Jets and now and since then I liked them
"The 70s was about melodies. The 80s will be about grooves." Barry White 1980

The two lead singers who look much younger in this video were only 12 and 13 respectively when "Crush on You " became a hit.
Miss these days
Yes! Love the funky guitars, synth bass, all of the synth arrangements, especially the piano solo...would LOVE to hear a Dirty Loops version of this song :D
I love The Jets. Thanks. Greetings from Ecuador.
As a 1985 baby...its natural that this music appeals more than the new staff (junk).I love this the jets!
I always loved their style.
Very talented family and boy can you hear that Minneapolis Sound
The Jets ❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶
Talented family.
Absolutely loved 💕 The Jets
you forgot Whitney Houston album debut that year too and was huge. It was tons of hits that year, including this one.
you must be young, because 1985 was one of the STRONGEST years in the 80's for music!
My song saw them at the L..A

i was a fan...its great to hear this song after all these years
1987 best year in the decade for music

Brought me back to my younger teenage days. The fashion and the music
TVOne's Unsung needs to do a bio on them ASAP!

The Jets know they can sing and dance!!
Didn't know it was Jerry Knight of Raydio that came up with the bass part! He's known for his bass on Bill Withers' Lovely Day, and his own Overnight Sensation!
This is my favorite song by the Jets
When I first heard it, the first thing that came to mind was Prince's Erotic City with the bass groove.
Kevin Payton On the Jets Unsung the producer said that’s exactly where he got the synth bass groove from ..
@@Lovejazz01 this is one of the reasons Rhe Jets were ripped off millions.
LOVE IT💖💖💖 Sooooo GROOVY 🔥💃🥰
Great family, great sound from the Pacific Islands years before the Bruno Mars story. Imagine that.
